Geek crime: Silicon Valley exec steals Legos using forged bar code stickers. by damontooin technology

I'm curious, what's the benefit of doing this to the news site?

RE:Do you support the President’s stand on same-sex marriage? {Have fun with this fundie poll ;)} by 8lack5kyin atheism

[–]cruise02 9 points10 points ago

In summary:

This is an outrage! That poll was supposed to be biased against the president's stand on gay marriage, not for it!

[Wired] You may already be losing job interviews and offers thanks to Klout, an automatically-opt-in service that ranks your social media influence (your "Klout score") and makes that information available to would-be employers for free. (x-post from r/news) by jleonardbcin technology

[–]cruise02 0 points1 point ago

Sensationalist title is sensational. The guy in the article applied for a VP position at a marketing agency and he had never heard of Klout. I think that's a fairly justified "no hire." This does not have any impact on job prospects for 99.99% of the rest of us.

Is it wrong to tell children that 1/0 = NaN is incorrect, and should be ∞? by cruise02in math

[–]cruise02[S] 6 points7 points ago

I've known a few pretty smart people who have made the mistake of trying to define 1/0 to equal ∞. The "well then, 0 * ∞ = 1" argument has never failed for me (so far) to explain why it's wrong.

Furthest jump in the world. Over 20 years later and still unbroken. by CallMePyroin videos

[–]cruise02 0 points1 point ago

I remember when this happened. Bob Beamon's previous record had stood for 23 years prior. Just a few days before Powell's jump, one of my high-school teachers said that Beamon's record might never be broken.

I had to explain to my boss that Jewish people can physically consume pork, but choose not to. What is the most ridiculous thing you have ever had to explain to a superior at your job? by Cash5YRin AskReddit

[–]cruise02 2 points3 points ago

I once had to explain to my project manager that ice can get below 0°C. Water doesn't just stop getting colder after it freezes, its temperature will drop to match that of its environment. This guy was a mechanical engineer.

Transatlantic ping faster than sending a pixel to the screen? (answered by John Carmack) by yannisrizosin programming

  1. That's not Stack Overflow.

  2. The edits were for spelling, capitalization, and typos. It's not like anyone changed the meaning of the reply.

Romney Walks into Obama’s Bin Laden Trap by cruise02in politics

[–]cruise02[S] 0 points1 point ago

I doubt it. I think there's too much pre-screening of questions going on at those things. I think the best we can hope for is that people wise up to this and come prepared with a good softball question for the screeners, then switch to a real question for the candidates.

Romney Walks into Obama’s Bin Laden Trap by cruise02in politics

[–]cruise02[S] 1 point2 points ago

He's surrounding himself with some of the same people that got Bush elected twice, so I think he'll be able to make a show of it for a while. I expect his numbers to gradually improve until the first televised debate with Obama, at which point his campaign should be effectively over. I'll be interested to see if he actually answers any questions at all, or if he just sticks to his talking points.

Oh, good. If you spelled it with an "i" I probably wouldn't have called you. ;)

Software Engineering Is a Dead-End Career, Says Bloomberg by mastermin compsci

[–]cruise02 68 points69 points ago

First, why link to a single-paragraph excerpt when the link to the full article is right there?

Second, I know computer science grads are mentioned in passing a couple of times in the full article, but this has almost nothing to do with computer science. It's just a BS article with a flamebait title.

not a typical submission, but saw this guy walking around a pet store enjoying his day by masonpiin aww

We're from there. My wife goes to that Petland every time we're back in Columbus so she can play with puppies. I always go hang with the turtle and pretend I'm Master Roshi.
