Oh, look. An imgur post. by drdavidphdin atheism

I meant r/atheism. This subreddit is supposed to be for freethinkers. I didn't say anything about obscure; why would you bring that up?

Stereotypes are wrong. Why do I have to "acknowledge the stereotype"? They are stupid and lazy. Also, there is no "wrong end" of the message. Some people are obese because of genetics, some aren't. Some people choose to be gay (ex: Cynthia Nixon) some don't. There is no wrong or right to either side.

What movies are good to watch after bleak or depressing movies to remind you that life can be happy and good? by omarsdroogin movies

[–]criterionauteur 4 points5 points ago

This makes me sad. Great Art can tell you many things about life. I'm not sure I understood tenacity until I read The Old Man and the Sea. Tokyo Story helped me understand something about family that I'd never put together before. Shakespeare can tell you a lot about human nature that you can't discover by observation because he was a genius. Movies can tell you things about life. I'm not saying it's a substitute, but watching movies is hardly "bouncing from one fantasy to the next."

No they aren't both correct. Every person in the bible belt doesn't blame obesity on genetics and doesn't believe being gay is a choice. Fuck this attitude.

This is supposed to be a place for skeptics and freethinkers.

Why is music in quotes? Are you trying to say her music is bad? Then just fucking say it. So her music is indicative of her personality? In related news: Eminem is a murderer.

Bingo. SRS is ridiculous, but Reddit can be horribly sexist sometimes. Rihanna says words that pop up on reddit all the time and she's suddenly trashy? Fuck that attitude and fuck people who have it.

Did Allison Williams from HBO's "Girls" just become the greatest female arch-villain of this generation for 20-something guys? by spradoin television

[–]criterionauteur 3 points4 points ago

All due respect, I think you are completely misreading this scene. Heartless is a strong word to use for a girl that seems to genuinely care for this guy. It's not her fault he's a smothering, needy kind of guy. Nothing wrong with being like that if you're with a person who tolerates it, but for her it was too much. The timing of her breaking up with him is a bit unusual, but the show is a comedy and it was funny.

Describing her as an arch-villain is way off the mark. It is a relationship that is fundamentally flawed and she bailed when she was faced with the problem in front of her. I know this isn't r/circlejerk but just because a girl isn't into a guy doesn't mean she's a heartless bitch. This attitude seems to be a problem for reddit. What do you think about the relationship about Adam and Hannah?

Sorry, accidental downvote believe it or not. Speaking of the "Fuck You" to criticism, I read somewhere that some people saw the sharks as his critics whom he could fight against but never totally defeat.

I hadn't even thought about him dying at the end. In that interpretation he becomes even more of a tragic hero. That is quite a poignant story about your grandmother; even while looking for meanings and themes in books it's nice to remember that literature has such an intense power to move people.

Are we to rely solely on the artist to derive meaning from their works? If so, then literary and all art criticism is invalid and should be replaced with interviews.

Oh, I thought "thanks for the abridgment" was sarcastic because it was a long post.

I know this is the internet and everybody lies but nope not in school. I just read it and had some thoughts about it.

These ideas that you claim are not actually there are grade-school level interpretations of Hemingway found in all the links above. I assumed some things in the post because I thought there were some general interpretations of Hemingway that were pretty rock solid. One link even goes so far as to call the story genuinely uplifting. I'm sorry but you're acting like my ideas are way out there when they are part of mainstream Hemingway criticism.

Wow, that is cynical. No need to be a dick. It's just that I had some ideas about the story, and wanted to discuss them.

"Thanks for the abridgment" ???? I thought this subreddit was for stuff like this.

It's possible I didn't make my point clearly enough. I don't mean to say that the story had a happy ending, but the Old Man clearly achieves honor in the face of struggle. He was faced with 84 days without a fish so he went to deeper waters. He was faced with a fish two feet bigger than his boat but he kept on fighting with it. He was faced with sharks and didn't cut his fish away; he fought the sharks off instead. His honor in defeat was a kind of moral and spiritual transcendence. He didn't learn anything, but he bravely stood up to danger.

In the Iliad, many men die in battle, but before they did, they achieved what Homer called "Hebe" or the spring bloom of the hero (I'm referring to the criticism of Bruce M. King). They achieved their greatest moment of glory at the moment of their death. It seems that since Honor in the face of defeat is one of the many themes in Hemingway's work, that the Old Man would be a prime example of this.

Also I fail to see how he lost his pride. Through his ordeal he has gained the respect of the villagers (which he didn't have before) and the boy has decided to go with him on his boat from now on. He clearly has more at the end of the story than at the beginning.

Haha, I'm glad you like it. I've done a couple of these in comments before and was wondering if there was any interest for it in r/movies.
