Housing will cause health problems.

Now you're not even trying.

Poor healthcare can hurt you worse than no healthcare.

You've given up completely.

THEN you are reimbursed by the GI Bill

You see my point.

I had zero idea if I would ever go to war

If this was a tremendous concern for you, then the military was a poor choice.

I like how "TRUE Education" means "whatever HN_Navy_MeD needs education to be for purposes of the current argument." Get back to me when you figure out a reason to be taken seriously, and turn off your fucking caps lock key.

Jobs can be god awful

Beats no job.

Food can be mediocre at best

Beats mediocre food that you pay for yourself.

Housing that is substandard

At least you can't be foreclosed on.

Healthcare that will give you

Beats no healthcare.

Education is a nightmare to deal with

Beats going through FAFSA, bro.

FAFSA is a loan program. The military education package is both loan reductions, an accelerated deferment program, and straight-up money advances to colleges on soldiers' behalves. And "better healthcare than most of us have" and "better than millions of Americans" wasn't a change of content, it was a simple locutionary change that you should be embarrassed to be calling so much attention to. It must be crazy, though, since so many Americans exposed to extremely hazardous conditions every day (construction workers, warm-weather crop pickers, fishermen, etc.) can easily have no health insurance, and they definitely don't have one that the government pays for unless they live in Massachusetts.

Putting FACTS in all caps doesn't mean you have them on your side.

That's horse shit and you know it. You've never been an astronaut, but I bet you could still talk intelligently about the compensation that astronauts receive from the government. I'm not talking about defining the experiential quality of being a soldier overseas, I'm talking about the simple numbers of what they earn for the work the do, and whether or not they're exactly charity material. Grow up - it may surprise you to learn that adults can actually have intelligent conversations about the military, unlike what American political discourse has been like for the last seventy years.

And a ton of exclamation points make you sound like you're hiding self-doubt, not more confident.

If you don't want to send them care packages you don't have to you don't have to criticize people helping others.

This sounds to me like "agree or shut up." Sorry, I don't agree. Tough jobs? They volunteered. Healthcare that gives you anything? That's better than millions of Americans. An education assistance package that gives you anything? That's better than for virtually all Americans.

Let me know when you feel like taking this a little more seriously.

So wait, these people have jobs, food, housing, better healthcare than most of us have, better education prospects than most of us have, and they volunteer to do the gruntwork in unpopular wars with unclear objectives that generally kill upwards of ten times more non-combatants than enemies of America...

...and reddit wants to send them care packages?

Something I like(d) about reddit is that, as hiveminded as it is, it is no where near as hiveminded as the general American electorate. We don't prostrate ourselves in front of our boys in blue - we didn't get the memo that we're supposed to. We don't glorify violence against brown people the way most of our fellow American voters do. We don't pay the same lip service to private contractors or the relatively small number of soldiers that our taxes pay them to support that our two main parties do.

No thanks.

Did the U.S. government ever own any slaves, or were all slaves in the U.S. privately owned? by craybateseduin AskHistorians

[–]craybatesedu[S] 1 point2 points ago

If the government wanted to sell a prisoner to a cotton plantation, it couldn't.

That's what I mean by "no vested property rights." I mean no vested property rights.

The government has no vested property rights in prison inmates. I know you were trying to be poignant, but this is not what I was talking about and you know it.

This really is the golden egg of this conversation.

Obama's church vs. Romney's church... by a_flaming_pooin Republican

[–]craybatesedu 0 points1 point ago

My questions are specific to their participation in those religions. I don't want to go up to Romney and say "Mormonism is stupid and evil, and so are you!" We can be more adult about political discussions of religion. I want to ask him about his views on Mormonism, and what he finds so personally appealing about it. Attacking religions is a boring and pedantic exercise. Learning more about peoples' personal beliefs is actually interesting.

Obama's church vs. Romney's church... by a_flaming_pooin Republican

[–]craybatesedu 2 points3 points ago

I think that Romney needs to answer some very serious questions about why he worked for an openly racist organization, and believed in them so strongly that he took years out of his life to evangelize them unsuccessfully. I want to know: what was it like to be a member of an officially racist organization? What was it about this officially racist organization that made you love it so strongly that you would spend years evangelizing it overseas? Did you ever openly dissent from its openly racist doctrines, and if not, why not? What did you like about a religion whose inaugural political participation was in the form of open, violent secession? The early Mormons clearly valued their faith much more highly than they did their loyalty to America - what about you?

I think that these are perfectly fair questions. They are the same kind that Senator Byrd had to re-answer pretty much every one of the many times he went up for re-election. I want to know the very same thing about Obama's church: why did you stay in that church, Mr. Obama? What was it about Reverend Wright's teachings that you liked? Where can we find the first evidence of you dissenting from some of his nuttier teachings, and if there is no such evidence, why not?

Yes, to answer your question - apples to apples.

Edited for a typo.
