How is "war against drugs" in Korea? by jinnyjuicein korea

[–]cr0ssword 0 points1 point ago

When I was in Korea a few people from Europe tried to get friends to mail them weed. I'm not sure why they thought that was a good idea, but after a few weeks they would get calls from the post office to pick up their packages. That usually doesn't happen--the packages get delivered straight to your apartment building/dorm/etc. So when the post office wants you to come in.... You're screwed. Stay away.

Harry Potter eBooks now available by Sirusavathin books

[–]cr0ssword 5 points6 points ago

I read an article in the Guardian that said they did this so that the e-books don't completely overtake physical book sales.

Jones said the prices of £4.99 and £6.99 for the ebooks were "fair, given their public utterances that they don't want to cannibalise print sales". "Harry Potter in print made £4m last year, so that's a business they obviously don't want to see evaporate, yet they do want to grow digital business too," said Jones. "They're not being aggressive about digital pricing but that might change as they watch how customers respond. They will also bring out enhanced editions, which will help them build a broader digital business."

Pottermore FINALLY starts to deliver! by freevamiin harrypotter

I think it's really genius that you're buying a generic "ebook," which you can then download 8 different times in any format you choose. I've never bought an ebook that I can download in different file types.

So at age 17 you could potentially be married, be pregnant/have a child, and be chosen as a tribute? That's pretty crazy.

I don't understand why schools take their kids on the metro. Use a freaking tour bus or something. It's so much easier to keep track of everyone.

So what did katniss mean when she said she realized how alike her and haymitch were? If she didn't even know what her plan was, what was haymitch actually agreeing to?

Is it true that Americans get a measly 2 weeks annual leave? If true, how does this affect the nation? by AnInchOfCredibilityin AskReddit

[–]cr0ssword 1 point2 points ago

I see global "work ethic" as a sliding scale. europe is the most relaxed. europeans have the most annual leave and work is not their highest priority of life. americans are actually in the middle of the scale, with an average of 2 weeks leave and the notion that work is a vehicle for money to get everything else you want.

asia is the most extreme, IMO. i lived in korea for a year, and you work from 7am to 10pm on average--youre not allowed to leave until your boss does. and your job is not a vehicle. your job is the be-all, end-all that your entire life as been building up to. your education, extracurriculars, major in college (which, btw, is chosen by test scores, not personal preference) will all add up to what company you work in and, therefore, the degree of meaning your life has.
