They inject this slurry of heavy metals, chemicals, etc.... called "mud" into the ground at high pressure to break up layers and layers of shell to make extraction easier. If this process is done near a fault line I see the likely hood of inducing tectonic activity to be high, if pressure is already present on the apposing plates. This is not to say, however, that fracking causes earthquakes, just that it facilities them; possibly to the extent that it increases the likelihood of strong quakes. I personally am apposed to fracking, not due to the possibility of inducing quakes, but because the environmental damage is insufferable. There is a mounting pile of evidence that shows fracking to cause various health risks to the surrounding counties where fracking has occurred. The contamination of the water table alone is reason enogh to stop this counterproductive practice.

colbaltblue on Have you guys seen this? I think a distributed wireless network of independent nodes would be far superior to our current infrastructure. This would also more closely match DARPAs intention to make the internet next to impossible to take down. I appreciate the numbers, any chance you could figure out how many UHF/VHF tower would be needed to blanket the U.S.? I tried to find out how many broadcast towers there are currently, to no avail. Do you think this would be possible/beneficial in a developing country like India?

Given the entire radio spectrum were available, would it be possible create a distributed wireless network that could compare to FTTP (fiber) in speed?

Let's pretend that the FCC reclaimed all available spectrum (excluding perhaps, the emergency broadcast frequencies), would it be feasible to develop a tiered communication standard? E.g. using VHF and UHF for long hops (node to node), while SHF and EHF handle short hops (client to node) while a third set handles server to node communication. Would the entire spectrum even be necessary/useful? I realize that the theoretical limits would have light as the fastest communication spectrum, but could radio be comparable to current FTTP speeds given these conditions? How many tiers would be necessairy to provide everyone in the U.S. with a connection to the big dumb pipe?

submitted by colbaltblue to askscience
[link] [12 comments]
