I'm so happy I recognized/own some of those. Don't have Illinoise on vinyl, though. Bet it sounds amazing. Nice collection!

Forget all the great concerts you've been to, what is the WORST concert you've seen? by scadsofemotionin AskReddit

[–]clubber_lang 0 points1 point ago

Saw him around that same time period. Fucking awful, and he seemed to be genuinely berating one of the band members throughout the concert. Raconteurs opened for him, who - aside from Jack White - had about as much life in them as a nursing home. A wasted evening, aside from now being able to say I've seen Bob Dylan in concert, being a total dick.

My father saw Sly & The Family Stone waaaay back in the day. The band starts playing, Sly comes out, wails unintelligibly into the mic for about 10 seconds, face plants. Show over, no refunds.

I am a comedy person who makes Metalocalypse, the Dethklok records, Home Movies and the GALAKTIKON record by therealbrendonsmallin IAmA

Jumping on the no particular questions bandwagon, I'd just like to say thanks for Home Movies as well. I started watching when it was first on in the late '90s and became a minor hero among my circle of friends for introducing them to it.

Also, I totally recorded all your songs off of Home Movies (which I recorded on VHS) to play in my car (on cassette) back in the day! Glad you finally released them with the DVDs.

Back to my cave of old person. Long live Brian May!

Why did bands from the UK dominate rock music in the 60s and 70s? by sunthornin AskHistorians

[–]clubber_lang 3 points4 points ago

I think it's also important to note what Britain was like post-WWII into the early '60s. People were still eating war rations, kids were playing in the rubble of bombed-out buildings (in some areas), and things were rather difficult and bleak for most. There were a handful of TV stations and a handful of state-run radio stations, none of which played much (if any) early rock 'n' roll, and certainly no R&B/blues.

The emergence of pirate radio was the natural reaction to an environment of few choices and overwhelming blandness. Anything that seems forbidden always becomes more attractive to those who seek it out; sure the highly-controlled nature of '50s/early '60s media in the UK only served to make rabid rock/R&B fans out of many Brits. John Lennon, for one, recalled listening to Radio Luxembourg on a clear night, hearing Elvis Presley for the first time, remarking that it was a life-changing experience, without which the Beatles may have never came to be.

When you compare the fairly spartan conditions of the UK with the affluence (and all the distractions of relative wealth) of the US and it's not difficult to speculate why there was such a surge in accomplished musicians from the UK for many years.

And then there was the matter of conscription ending. Young men were no longer obligated to spend years in the military. They went to art schools, moved to Europe, listened to more music. This must have also cultivated openness and exposed young people to culture they may not have known otherwise.

Redditors who grew up poor. What's your worst childhood memory? by Ititchestoomuchin AskReddit

Knowing we wouldn't be poor at all if my father gave money to us instead of his new wife and family.

Is it weird that weird is spelled weird and not wierd as the conventional i before e except after c rule states? by ChaldoRedditorin answers

[–]clubber_lang 1 point2 points ago

I like the etymology of 'weird' quite a lot; it used to mean 'fate-ful'.

Reddit, when was the last time you blew someone's mind with something you thought was common knowledge? by LilGuardDuckin AskReddit

Chatting with a college-educated friend of my brother's and mentioned Massachusetts State Troopers have uniforms that make them look like the SS. He had no idea what the SS were. I thought everyone at least watched the History Channel.

Christian Fundamentalist’s Continued Abuse of Women by secularthinkerin Freethought

[–]clubber_lang 1 point2 points ago

There are some who believe that Adam was more at fault for the fall for listening to Eve (when he knew better) and Eve was simply "influenced" by Satan. But, I suppose, they'd rather believe that which confirms their fears of female biology -- which is at the core (ha!) of the whole Adam/Eve story anyhow.

I think the average person (in Western society, anyhow) isn't aware of the extreme lengths to which their particular belief system can be taken. As a poster said above, I think that many are simply unaware (through willful ignorance) of the ways that secular humanism have shaped Western society and, therefore, their religious beliefs.

If they're a "moderate" Christian, for example, they like to believe that it's all about love, Jesus-peace and charity while ignoring/not really delving into the unpleasant (yet no less important) stuff that's been at the core of their religion for centuries.

You can really tell the average age of Reddit (young), since E is one of the least popular choices. :)
