So Reddit, what awesome stories does your family history hold? by LukeNygmain AskReddit

[–]clubber_lang 3 points4 points ago

My great-uncle was a Jesuit priest. There are all these pictures of him hanging out with John Wayne, director John Ford, President Eisenhower, President Kennedy and there's a picture of General MacArthur personally dedicated to him. Odd thing is nobody in my family has/had any idea why a priest was hanging around Hollywood and with presidents and generals.

So, my father's cousin was studying in France in the early '60s and had befriended the son of a prominent North Korean politician or something. One day he's strolling through Paris with said friend when he sees his uncle (the priest) coming towards him. Shocked to run into his uncle in a foreign country, he doesn't have any time to say anything before he and his friend are hustled into a car by two big dudes. While in the car the uncle, in perfect Korean, starts grilling this friend of his. Satisfied with whatever answers this kid is giving him, my dad's cousin and his friend are dropped off somewhere out in the French countryside to find their way back to Paris.

My theory? He was a spy who had a very good cover of being a priest. I have never been able to find out what the real deal was, though.

In New England, I've often seen public trash cans labeled "rubbish". I've not seen that anywhere else, though.

You can really tell the average age of Reddit (young), since E is one of the least popular choices. :)

I often hear "freedom isn't free" from these sorts of folks. How about "freedom isn't just what you want it to be"?

What are some things I should know as my parents get older? by Somanytacosin AskReddit

[–]clubber_lang 4 points5 points ago

And on behalf of all the friends and relatives who asked "how is your dad?" and forgot to ask how you were doing, I aplologise.

This is an important point that you (OP) should know.

If you do wind up as a caretaker for your parent/parents, it will be incredibly difficult all on its own. But such a situation can be made a hell of a lot worse by the unintentional ignorance of friends and family. Make sure you take the time for yourself and to create a support network for your own sanity.

People who post about their health on Facebook. I really don't care if you have a headache, nor do I want the details of some disgusting medical procedure.

What's Really Wrong with the Healthcare Industry by MyGogglesDoNothingin austrian_economics

I appreciate your thoughts!

I live in a country where people cheer about letting someone die who didn't have the money to pay for health care. While there is plenty of evidence of good-hearted people in this world, I suppose (as you suggested) I'm not as optimistic/idealistic about human nature -- especially in a country where hyper-individualism continues to isolate people from one another.

I agree with you in principle, as I think the current system is broken, but I don't see how your theory is in any way realistic -- given human nature (I don't think everyone feels that we have to take care of the poor, less so the sick) and the value of skilled medical care. Also, when dealing with hundreds (or thousands) of charities, wouldn't this be a billing nightmare similar to the current system?

While I hold many so-called libertarian ideals, I do feel that a single-payer system is the most humane and equitable way to handle basic and emergency health care, but I am certainly open to other ideas. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you?

Forget brain surgery; what of cancer? Cutting-edge care can take years and cost millions (at current prices). Treatment itself can cause lifelong health problems, need for reconstructive surgeries, etc. It's much more likely that someone will get cancer rather than an expensive one-off surgery.

I'm also trying to form an opinion about the Austrian school as well; would love an answer to this.

It can be difficult if the parent is under 65 or so. Just my experience, but I may have spoken to a shittier-than-I-thought accountant.

Hulk Hogan's wife got 70% of his money in divorce. How the hell is this legal!? by fuffynonoin AskReddit

[–]clubber_lang 52 points53 points ago

Precisely. My best friend's father was a doctor, got custody from the mom, and made my pal's mother pay child support. She made about $20k/year at the time, and was also paying for half of his student loans after their divorce.

Managers, supervisors, and HR people of Reddit- tell me about your worst employees... by selfreferencein AskReddit

Kind of long; hadn't thought about this in a while.

I managed a salon for a couple of years in college, in a small-ish, fairly conservative city. Typical long-suffering managerial stuff, with owners who couldn't be bothered to do shit. Lots of shenanigans went down, but nobody was worse than this one dude -- let's call him Cory.

Cory was a seriously talented hair stylist and had a devoted following -- so much so that he was booked solid every day he worked, and for at least a month out.

Cory made lots of cash, so he partied like a rock star every night, which invariably meant he'd call in "sick" at least 2-3/week. Naturally, I had to reschedule everyone somehow, enduring their wrath and threats (they never yelled at him, of course) and Cory's wrath when he'd have some days where he was double-booked. He always forgot this was his own fucking fault.

Anyhow, Cory was a man-whore and had a big mouth to boot. He loved bragging about how he'd go down to the fitness club where all the rich guys in the area went and give them BJs or let them top him. He'd say all this while he was working in a busy salon with at least 6 other stylists. Needless to say, many of the other stylists would lose their clients when he did this, but the owners didn't care because he made so much damn money for them. So...nobody really liked him.

One day he was doing his usual bullshit, when I hear Cory SCREAMING at the top of his lungs. He runs past me out the door and speeds off in his car. The salon is in an uproar and my day is fucked.

NSFL PART: I later learn that his eye was itching him badly all day. He'd gone into the bathroom and discovered little white worms wriggling out of his eyeball. Turns out he'd gotten crabs in his eyes from one of the many dudes he blew, and those were the larvae that were troubling his eyeball so.

He sauntered back in about an hour later like nothing happened. I quit about a month later.

TL;DR: Notorious irresponsible man-whore hair stylist winds up with crabs, and not where you think.

I don't think it's that weird to do this. As long as your parents aren't mentally disturbed or abusive, why not appreciate the fuck out of them in whatever way possible?

I'm torn about Jimi's possible career trajectory. Would he have taken Funkadelic to even more awesome levels of funk? Would he have become a semi-recluse, releasing increasingly brilliant, but critically-perplexing, albums and touring every seven years or so? More pressingly, would he have gone all Carlos Santana eventually and recorded with Rob Thomas in the early aughties?
