Any Jurassic Park fans in TwoX? by peony33in TwoXChromosomes

[–]chocolatechipcookie 0 points1 point ago

For some reason I always assumed that she meant that the (entirely female) dinosaurs would inherit the earth, not that the dinosaurs would only eat the male humans. I like it much better with this interpretation, though! (and it makes more sense, too, it'd be weird to refer to dinosaurs as "women" regardless of their sex)

What is the one thing that will haunt you for the rest of your life? by blackpapermaxin AskReddit

[–]chocolatechipcookie 0 points1 point ago

My mom died when I was 16 after a 2-year struggle with cancer. My sister's an ER doctor, and I guess she thought that I was too young to see my mom die or something like that (which is ridiculous, considering everything I saw during the 2 years before that). When she knew it was coming soon she took me to Friendly's to get lunch so we wouldn't be there for it. I don't know if I will ever forgive her. All of my other brothers and sisters were there for her the moment she died and I was eating chicken fingers on the other side of town with no clue as to what was happening.

I have $800 and a month and a half free this summer. What's the best way for me to spend my time/money? by chocolatechipcookiein travel

These are some awesome suggestions! Hiking the Appalachian Trail definitely seems like the most tempting idea, especially since I can go to some of those other places when I'm older and have a bit more money to work with. I'm going to do a little more research and start planning it! Thanks everyone!!

Can I do this on my own, safely? I would absolutely love to hike the AT, but I'm a fairly small woman and I'm a little unsure about camping in the woods by myself.

Ladies, what are some of the things that your mother told you not to do? by underneaththeseain TwoXChromosomes

[–]chocolatechipcookie 3 points4 points ago

Oh no! Sorry :( My mom also said, "The more you cry, the less you have to pee!" Pretty sure it's completely scientifically inaccurate, but still kind of funny. And I guess the idea is that crying's really not that bad for you.

"Don't ever stop telling jokes. Even if people tell you to stop or don't think they're funny, don't ever change that about yourself because it's the most important part of who you are."

This was one of the last things my mom said to me before she died. Now every time I tell a stupid pun and no one laughs, I just picture her grinning, nine days away from dying and still able to chuckle at whatever silly nonsense my 16-year old self had come up with. I don't even remember what joke I had told her that day, but I'll remember that advice for the rest of my life.

Texas abortion sonogram law now in effect. Fuckers. by tossingittoyouin TwoXChromosomes

I agree completely. I went to high school with a girl who had three abortions before she was 16. Abortion should not be used as a form of birth control.

. . . I actually think this is a totally fair comparison, but I'm on the other side of your argument. I think everyone who eats meat SHOULD know exactly how it got on their table and it's a shame that most people can completely disassociate meat with the animals that it comes from. If this was the case we would have far less animal cruelty.

When checking for breast cancer, what are my breasts supposed to feel like? Because I've always been able to feel mass in both of my breasts (I also have inverted nipples if that changes anything), so I find it difficult to tell the difference between 'lumps' and just the stuff already in mine. by [deleted]in TwoXChromosomes

[–]chocolatechipcookie 8 points9 points ago

My doctor once told me that it's normal for breasts to feel kind of like cottage cheese, but if you feel anything harder than that, like the consistency/size of a pencil eraser, then you should be worried. It made me feel a lot better to put it in physical terms like that, because everything else I'd heard was so vague.

Valentines' Day Plans? Really want to hear from the single ladies by JackiJinxin TwoXChromosomes

[–]chocolatechipcookie 1 point2 points ago

I honestly prefer being single on V Day -- when I'm dating someone, it always feels a little bit forced, like we're only doing something because there's outside pressure. I love having a good night in or out with my lady friends instead :) There's a lot of love out there in the world, I don't know why it always needs to be about the romantic kind.

Technically it's not legal for anyone under 13 to use Facebook, but obviously a lot of people don't pay attention to that. They actually have a pretty good support page for parents, too: http://www.facebook.com/help/parents. You should definitely point her parents there!

Are our relationship standards realistic? by newcraftiein TwoXChromosomes

[–]chocolatechipcookie 19 points20 points ago

One of my favorite Dear Sugar columns talks about this: http://therumpus.net/2011/08/dear-sugar-the-rumpus-advice-column-81-a-bit-of-sully-in-your-sweet/

It's a bit long, but the gist of it is that a "perfect relationship" really just consists of two flawed people who have found a way to handle those flaws together.

I've been trying to figure that out for 8 years, since my mother passed away. I think this is the closest thing I've found to a real answer: http://therumpus.net/2011/07/dear-sugar-the-rumpus-advice-column-78-the-obliterated-place/

Girls kissing girls vs boys kissing boys in the eyes of pop culture.. by 3ll3irain femmit

[–]chocolatechipcookie 3 points4 points ago

This is the quandary I have as a teacher -- not only is it adorable, but I always feel like I'm squashing some beautiful, expressive part of their personalities because of a silly (but necessary) rule.

[–]chocolatechipcookie 1 point2 points ago

These are exactly the reasons I would have listed. They're allowed to give hugs, but mouth-to-mouth kisses cause way too many issues.

I teach first grade -- and let me tell you, it does not start out that way. We've actually had a major issue in my class with the boys kissing each other (major in that no kissing is allowed in school at all, regardless of the gender of either participant). At that age, they engage in the same kind of playful flirtations and explorations that the girls do. Seeing the difference between my students and my adult male friends is pretty striking -- it seems pretty obvious to me that what you've described is the result of socialization at some point during boys' upbringing.

I think this comic shows to men how most women feel about street harassment. by dreamqueen9103in TwoXChromosomes

[–]chocolatechipcookie 3 points4 points ago

When I was in graduate school, I was trying to decide between teaching high school or middle school. I went to visit a high school to try to decide and got whistled at in the parking lot by some students. I'm currently teaching first grade almost entirely because of that whistle.

I think it's more that they will literally yell at anyone who appears female, regardless of what you look like aside from that. People catcall me just as much when I'm a grungy mess as when I'm dressed nicely and look decent -- I think it's more that they see women as female objects than attractive people that prompts it. This is why I hate the idea of girls "asking for it" by dressing a certain way -- it doesn't matter what you wear, apparently just being a woman is enough to get yelled at.
