Sharepoint Administration as a full time position? by chatan1979in sharepoint

[–]chatan1979[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks. Yeah that is pretty much the direction I think I am going to go. There will be a few departments that will need their own web app simply due to their size and the type of work they do, but the other normal departments will just reside in their own site collection.

Did you pull all your normal shares into Sharepoint over time?

Yes I agree. Right now with over 100 departments it is hard to decide how to set his this up. My test site just has each department as its own collection, but I'm wondering if it would be better to put each department on its own web application.

I found this script which is suppose to recreate it, but so far it hasnt worked.

$webservice = [System.Type]::GetType("Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPIisWebServiceSettings, Microsoft.SharePoint, Version=14.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c")

$Instance = $webservice::Default

$Method = $webservice.GetMethod("ProvisionLocal", "Instance, NonPublic", $null, @(), $null)

$Method.Invoke($Instance, $null)

$Method = $webservice.GetMethod("Provision", "Instance, Public", $null, @(), $null)

$Method.Invoke($Instance, $null)

I get an error that says :

Exception calling "Invoke" with "2" argument(s): "A configuration file cannot be created for the requested Configuratio n object." At line:1 char:15 + $Method.Invoke <<<< ($Instance, $null) + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [], MethodInvocationException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : DotNetMethodTargetInvocation

Again, any help is most appreicated.

While SQL isn't my strongest, I am learning quickly. I have a fairly strong knowledge of IIS, Server 2008 and Active directoy. I will be working in tandem with our network admins for most of the AD related things. right now I'm just devouring as much Shareppoint knowledge as I can. Some of the links in this Subreddit have been very helpful in addition to the books I've already read.

Yeah this is where I am now. Being a hospital/clinic I'm looking at each department having its own site. At the start I will be the administrator of them all until I can get managers trained and make them collection owners of their respective departments and so forth. Its gonna be a pretty daunting task.

Thanks for your advice. I think, too , the other dificulty is going to be convincing my superiors that this is giong to become full time. I think they are considering it, but because they are not familiar with Sharepoint they don't know all that is going to be involved. So it iwll be up to me to paint them a picture of the potential of job.

Thanks for your reply. As a full time Farm Admin, how much crossover is there with your duties and say, network adminstration or Active directory administration? We ahve 2 network admins that handle user access and domain administration and im seeing now that my position as a farm admin is going to cross over into their world quite a bit.

Much appreciated. The actual conversion to the new EHR is still a little more than a year away so we are still in the planning stages as far as the IT side goes. I will take you up on that PM if I have other questions. thanks
