Death In The Andes by Mario Vargas Llosa is breath-taking. The Gold Bug Variations by Richard Powers is incredibly lovely and is somewhat awe-inspiring to boot.

Is the human brain an asynchronous, synchronous, or some blend kind of processor? by systmkorin neuro

[–]carlEdwards 1 point2 points ago

Here's a couple of leads: you might find Jeff Hawkins book "On Intelligence" to be an interesting introduction to the topic (http://www.onintelligence.org/). Dharmendra Modha is the head of IBM's project "Blue Brain" (http://bluebrain.epfl.ch/). According to this talk by Danny Hillis the Connection Machine was invented to research exactly these questions (http://www.kurzweilai.net/intelligence-as-an-emergent-behavior-or-the-songs-of-eden). All of these people have talks captured in video on the internet.

Introductory music theory/composition text(s) for techies by monetisedin musictheory

[–]carlEdwards 1 point2 points ago

There is a lot of music theory in the study of synthesis (particularly digital synthesis) and computer music (algorithmic composition and so forth) which is a fairly "techie" approach... You might enjoy something like Dodge & Jerse "Computer Music: Synthesis, Composition, and Performance" or Curtis Roads "The Computer Music Tutorial". If you're interested in this direction say something and we can provide lots more links.

There is less expensive real estate one can use. And; I'm not certain that inmates need quite as much communications infrastructure as has been laid into this particular neighborhood (http://vimeo.com/30642376).

I believe Learning Maya (www.learning-maya.com) is still up (if a little dusty). It's still a good resource.

There is a category of books which are written using the characters of Holmes and Watson (etc.) by some of the best mystery authors as a sort of homage (some of the first fan-fiction (if you will)). "The Seven Percent Solution" is one of the most famous (and best). Caleb Carr's is very good. My favorite is "The Bee-Keeper's Apprentice" by Laurie R. King. Start with the canonical works (for sure) but don't stop there!

Tracing authors influences back through history is fun-- a sort of "family tree" of a genre. Can you get back to Sherlock Holmes (starting with Tim Powers) going one generation at a time? If you read an interview with an author they'll usually be asked about what they read as a child.

New to Maya. Help is appreciated. by dailyandroidin Maya

[–]carlEdwards 0 points1 point ago

This is exactly what I was going to say. Maya is so vast that you have to plant your flag somewhere and expand out from that point. Every project needs a model to start-- if for no other reason than to support the shader (catch light, cast shodows, etc.). Start with the modeling tools and when you have a play-room filled with props you can begin to differentiate their looks (with shaders). Think about a unified set of models (like lures in a tackle box or kitchen appliances) to test you mettle on.

I teach elementary school. My husband told me I do "too much" for my kids. What are the things you remember from elementary school that your teachers did? by metubialmanin AskReddit

[–]carlEdwards 2 points3 points ago

Although it was a few years after grade school,... My 10th grade history teacher would get us talking about someone's family story which illustrated a point in American history. That would remind someone of another story. This would lead off on some other tangent. Mr. Schall (sp?) would let this go on for quite some time and then ask "oh my gosh, how'd we get here..." and he'd expect a detailed answer of all of the branch points in the thread. Best lesson of my life.
