I'm about to become an AppleCare Advisor...and I know nothing about Apple. by NoonToker17in apple

[–]caramelpolice 0 points1 point ago

You will be trained on OS X (even if you're supporting iOS). Don't worry about it. If you're an At-Home Advisor you get an iMac (and an iPod touch, if you're in iOS) to work with, so you'll have time to get hands-on experience.

Yes, but the way he worded it - "Plus T-Mobile coverage is not great in my area" - made it sound like he thought the unlocked model only worked on T-Mobile. Was just trying to clarify.

The December update was quickly "paused" and never resumed. The update in April was the first proper rollout of ICS (and it was 4.0.4, not 4.0.5).

The GSM Nexus S only got ICS last month too. Don't blame Sprint.

Apple's latest Lion update continues preparations for Retina display Macs by Cidarin apple

[–]caramelpolice 0 points1 point ago

If they just incrementally raise the resolution though, they're going to hit a point where their standard assets are too small for the higher resolution and their hi-DPI assets are too large. They don't have intermediate assets between 1x and 2x like Windows does - OS X hi-DPI mode is a straight jump, just like with Retina on iOS.

[–]caramelpolice 0 points1 point ago

There's no logical reason to double the resolution on Macs this way because they're resolution independent

Yes, but if they keep the current assets, the physical size of the interface will keep getting smaller as resolution goes up. To counter-act this, you have to increase the resolution of the assets as well. Non-integral scaling will invariably be janky and either look terrible due to scaling artifacts on apps that haven't been updated or just break apps altogether (see: Windows hi-DPI modes). Thus, OS X's hi-DPI mode, which is precisely pixel-doubled, just like Retina mode in iOS. Of course, if you enable hi-DPI mode on a screen that isn't at least quadruple the resolution of current Mac models, you lose physical screen space. The only way for them to utilize the hi-DPI mode introduced in Lion without reducing the amount of physical screen space available to the user is to use displays that are at least quadruple resolution - just like Retina displays. Which yes, may be expensive and may not exist yet, but hey - those Retina iPad displays didn't exist either until Apple placed their order.

they will never do Retina Macs the way they did on iDevices.

Within three years, probably much less, you will feel like a moron for saying this.

Why has Apple been on OS X for so long without ever calling it XI,XII, etc.? by SnackeyG1in apple

[–]caramelpolice 0 points1 point ago

OS 9 and OS X were totally different systems to begin with, right down to the kernel. iOS and OS X already share lots of core systems like Darwin, Quartz, Core Image, and parts of Cocoa.

Yep. It'll also get HD Voice, too.

HTC EVO 4G LTE for Sprint review -- Engadget by sri745in Android

I am using the app. But the point remains, Sprint's 3G speeds are way slower than competitors. And it's not just affecting Facebook, it's affecting everything.

Tucson, AZ. And yeah, I've heard this problem a lot about Sprint over the past few months.

I have found the speed of the 3G network around Boston adequate for my daily needs.

Maybe for you. I get Sprint 3G speeds of <200kbps. Takes ages just to load my Facebook feed.

None of Sprint's LTE phones support WiMAX. Not this, not the Galaxy Nexus, not the LG phone no one cares about.

[–]caramelpolice 10 points11 points ago

I live in a city of 500,000 people and no WiMAX coverage. I just ran a SpeedTest on 3G and got 120kbps down. If it weren't for Wi-Fi at home and on campus my phone would be damn near unusable. Sprint needs to get their act together for LTE or customers will leave in droves.

If Google "embraced" the Android Port to C# would that negate their Oracle troubles? by Infulablein Android

[–]caramelpolice 1 point2 points ago

Bingo. Dropping Java would basically mean making developers - and thus Android as a platform - start all over.

Why is there ATT branding on my One X? Why is Apple the only manufacture that can use their own box, have no branding on the device, and have no bloatware shipped with the phone? Why aren't Android manufacturers following suit? by Red-Soxin Android

[–]caramelpolice 0 points1 point ago

There is a Sprint logo on the back in place of the Google logo, just like the Verizon version.

Nexus S 4G fits the bill though. No carrier branding at all, no bloatware, nearly identical box to the GSM version.

Video game console dev kits by ghaibin gaming

[–]caramelpolice 0 points1 point ago

Well, the ones pictured in the OP are all fairly early prototype dev kits. Later versions looked more like their consoles. Early 360 dev kits, for instance, were PowerMac G5s; early Wii dev kits were GameCubes with connections for the remote.
