Well r/atheism, having been an enlightened atheist for 4 years I have recently turned to religion and found a new life there. by RobTryxin atheism

I don't understand interfaith relationships at all. So one person believes the other is going to spend an eternity in hell, and the other believes the first is crazy. Do people in such relationships actually believe the tenets of their faith? How can this be a healthy relationship?

Your argument falls apart the instant a theist decides to use the reverse to prove I'm not an atheist by not denying there's a god.

Now we're getting into the difference between positive atheism and negative atheism. Positive atheism is the positive assertion that there is no god; negative atheism is merely the lack of belief in a god. So the argument doesn't fall apart because you don't have to specifically deny there's a god in order to be an atheist.

The "third alternative" between theism and (positive) atheism isn't agnosticism (which, again, has to do with what you know, not what you believe)--it's negative atheism.

I used to identify as an atheist

This is exactly my point. You don't identify as an atheist. But do you attend church regularly? Do you believe in the Christian god, as described in the Bible? Do you believe in any deities at all?

If not, then congratulations, you are an atheist. I can see that you don't like using that word, and I sort of understand why, but that doesn't mean it's not an accurate description of your beliefs. What you are doesn't necessarily correspond with how you identify yourself.

As an agnostic, sticking to either immovably just seems like a strange reason to pick a side.

I'm not sticking to any side "immovably." I am currently an atheist, but that's not set in stone, or an intrinsic part of who I am. If someone wants to change my belief, that's easy to do, at least in principle--just show me some evidence! But until someone does that, I remain an atheist in the meantime.

Theism and atheism are respectively belief and non-belief in gods. What would you call someone who believes neither?

It's not logically possible to have neither belief nor non-belief.

I know lots of people who like to say that they're neither a theist nor an atheist, but they still live their life as if there's no god. That is to say, they don't actually believe in a god--they are atheist--they just have some weird hangups about the word itself.

One doesn't have to recognize that he is an atheist in order to actually be one.

Do you remember a while back someone posted about that custom-made stamp he bought? It said "E PLURIBUS UNUM federal endoresement of a deity or religion violates the U.S. Constitution," and he used it to stamp over "In God We Trust" on his money. r/atheism loved it, and many people bought their own stamps and posted their own images of defaced money. Why was that so popular, and this not? What's the difference? What did you think of the stamp thing at the time, if you were aware of it?

There's certainly a strong connection between knowledge and belief, but they're still two separate things. When you ask someone whether he is a theist or an atheist, you're asking him about his beliefs, not about his knowledge. "I'm neither a theist nor an atheist; I'm an agnostic" doesn't actually answer the question. It's like saying "I'm neither a theist nor an atheist; I'm a conservative"--you're talking about a totally different subject.

Whether you think we can know if god exists or not, you can still hold either belief.

I am utterly perplexed by the overwhelmingly negative response this post seems to have gotten.

Sectarian endorsement of religion on money is blatantly unconstitutional, and I had the impression that r/atheism largely agreed. Remember when everyone went gaga over those "E PLURIBUS UNUM" stamps? Why all the negativity now? No, he's not going to change the world with just his hole punch, but so what? It's just a silly little thing he likes to do in protest.

What's the big deal? Why is this a problem?

Agnosticism is a position on knowledge, not on belief. It's independent of atheism/theism.

The Scientific Memethod? by Not_Me_But_A_Friendin atheism

[–]cafink 2 points3 points ago

Yes it's related in a sense, but definitely not directly related.

So we agree that RandomExcess was incorrect to assert that the scientific method "has nothing to do with atheism" (emphasis mine). Great!

[–]cafink 5 points6 points ago

You're correct that one is not a requisite of the other, but that's not the same as having nothing whatsoever to do with one another. One is, in fact, commonly brought about by the other, which means that they are related, and that people who are interested in one are likely to be interested in the other. It's a perfectly appropriate thing to post here.

Because you appeared to have been trying to get information that the OP already provided, in spite of the fact that there actually were a number of pertinent details omitted from his post.

Either you missed that detail, in which case you might find it helpful to have it pointed out, or I misunderstood the purpose of your question, in which case I would find it helpful to understand what you were getting at.

Edit: Or just swear at me and downvote my posts, instead. That's helpful, too!
