Learning TM Meditation by SleepEatShitin Meditation

[–]bschlotz 1 point2 points ago

oh, I fucking love bikram yoga. It's a fairly well put together vinyasa series, and the heat is really terrific (some additional emphasis on body mindfulness would be good, but if you've got it already it's no problem). It's just that the dude, bikram, is super litigious. He sues the crap out of any yoga studios that use similar sequences, even though many of those sequences are things he adapted from tradition. He's a profiteering jerk.

oh, I attempted it wholeheartedly - I was plunked down to watch a 30 minute powerpoint about how TM is magical, and then I was asked to pay 3 months salary to learn how to do it. Anyone who tries to profit off meditation techniques (which were adapted from freely available buddhist and hindu sources) by claiming that their techniques are somehow qualitatively better is running a scam, period.

I'm inclined to think TM is somewhere between a scam and a cult. Like bikram yoga but worse

To those who think that the term "tranny" isn't offensive because it is an abbreviation. by SuperMsein transgender

[–]bschlotz 7 points8 points ago

I give .25 fucks about intent (marginally more than zero). If someone uses a racial, ethnic, or sexual slur, what they're showing is either a) they didn't get the fucking memo that you don't use those words if you aren't a member of the group described or b) they don't give a shit about hurting peoples feelings. I mean, I guess it's a good idea to give the benefit of the doubt and assume they're ignorant rather than douchebags.

the "gay" comparison doesn't hold water. google the word "gay" and the word "tranny" and you'll see that one of those words is a self identifier and the other is a slur (and a fetishization).

I'm on the fence about the possibility of reclamation of "the t word". on the one hand, I've seen the strength and joy that gay men from using the word faggot, and how "dyke" has lost almost any semblance of derogatory connotation in the lesbian community. On the other hand, I think the entire community really needs to have consensus for it to be effective and not just hurtful, and there certainly isn't any such consensus in the trans community (it seems like 5 years ago it was more popular, these days it's an out and out nono)

oh dear. I hope your heart heals, I can't imagine how hard you'd have to be pushed to actually consciously resort to cruelty towards someone you once cared for. Not sure that being cruel will help that healing, but I guess we've all got our coping strategies. my heart really goes out to you.

I'm really sorry that you're carrying enough bitterness to actually take joy in making fun of your ex's attempt to find companionship. It must have been a very unpleasant breakup. But I also feel for your ex, to be semi-publicly mocked like that. It seems rather cruel.

I think that affricates are definitionally homorganic, I might be wrong about that.

Also, RE umpaku, wow! I'd love to hear that, do you have any examples recorded? You say "more often than not", what's the environment? (or does it vary speaker to speaker?)

Kafka on the shore by haruki murakami has a very positive, non martyr-ey portrayal of a gay transguy. He's something of a minor character, but it still made me happy.

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I still really love Hedwig and the Angry inch.
