Word 2010 spawns multiple processes - anyone else seen this before? by bsambronein sysadmin

Yeah, pretty much. I saw a bunch of commented out lines with their developers saying stuff only sometimes works.

Nothing in IE compatibility seems to help, but I haven't tried putting it in IE7 compatibility mode if that's even possible? This plugin has a .dot file that I can see the VBA code in. I might just hack something together where if it finds an orphan process it kills it.

These are exactly the things I wish I could do. Their entire workflow is dependent on this plugin. When I remove it just for fun, I can't get the problem to reoccur but it is a different test environment then. I can't open docs from their website without this plugin. FF and Chrome won't even launch the site. It's strange how IE8 works better than IE9, but not completely so. That tells me it at least in part is browser related? So far my fix has been to tell people to 'click slowly', which doesn't always go over well with end users.

It's the generic app crash type of event when an Office app dies. I've also looked to see if there is anything that would indicate why multiple WINWORD processes started in the first place, but found nothing. I'm leaning toward it being an add-in issue with NetDocs, but another client of ours has a similar issue with their web based document system. Also using IE8 / Win7 / Word 2010 where multiple WINWORD processes will occasionally show up. Clicking turbo fast seems to usually cause it, but other times it just happens.

Want to learn more to enter the IT environment by gurbourain sysadmin
[–]bsambrone 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago
They should be running 2008, but I run into a lot of 2003 servers out in the wild. If you learn 2008, you will be good. The same principles apply to 2003, and once you know the concepts of doing stuff (like adding a user to an OU in ActiveDirectory), then finding where the editors are for 2003 is a simple google search away.
Workstations are mixed, with most of our clients on Win 7 now. Some business apps only work on XP, but that's becoming less of a problem as vendors release updates. I've never had to support Linux on a workstation, and I don't think that's common. In the server environment I see it most as Apache web servers running a LAMP stack.
If you're going to pick a direction to learn IT, I would advise Microsoft. The reason for this is that there is a GUI for quite a bit of it. Once you feel fine in the GUI, then use command line. To my knowledge, and I could be very wrong here, Linux server administration is strictly command line which isn't as inviting to someone starting out. That, and just about every big enterprise uses Microsoft's implementation of Active Directory.
In the company I work for, we use Microsoft server OS's. 98% of our clients are the same, and all the workstations use some flavor of Windows as well. That said, there is a strong Linux presence out there too.

Grab a free copy of VirtualBox and set up some Server 2008R2 VM's. Make one a domain controller, and have the other one do something like host a sample website. Getting a good foundation in Active Directory will really help, and setting up your own AD domain is a good way to start the process. DangerChips mentioned using an imaginary company and adding new users and stuff, and that is a really good idea.
Watching websites users are going to? by Crysonin sysadmin
I've deployed a Spector 360 setup before, but it might be overkill for what you need. It can track ANYTHING users do. Depending on how many users there are, you can get away with a single server with some decent I/O. I haven't looked at their cheaper options, but I had a good experience setting up this software for my client (it was easy) and their support is good if you hit a snag during install.

Cooking advice for going healthier by lakewoodjoe112in Cooking

This! I typically avoid aisles, and I eat healthier as a result. Unfortunately, the meat counter has massive slabs of bacon readily available... and it isn't in an aisle.

SF Bay Area - where to buy an AR-15? by bsambronein guns

As an update, I ended up getting a Colt AR-15 from Golden Gate Guns in San Bruno. The staff was really helpful, and I highly recommend this shop.

Jackson Arms referred me to High Bridge Arms, but I haven't heard back yet after leaving a voicemail. I'll let you know.
I'm going to buy the full thing. I have no problem taking them apart, but I'm not terribly inclined to build the full thing myself.

Bacon on the campfire. by Liller2010in Bacon
[–]bsambrone 3 points4 points5 points 1 month ago
The last time I cooked bacon on a campfire, I used a cooking pot instead of a pan. This was because the cookware I had was very small, and I was scared of the dripping oil from the smallish pan would catch fire and burn my bacon. So I cut up the bacon in half for each strip, and cooked them in shifts in the pot. What ended up happening is that the fat would render, and the bacon would eventually cook. After half a pound of this, I had a lake of bacon fat and I was pretty much boiling (braising?) the bacon in its own fat. It was delicious. I found that when I put the small cooking pot over the hottest spot on the fire, the bubbling bacon fat would get all kinds of pissed off and roil-ey, and therefore cook my bacon faster. You should try it!

The Bible is true.
I just pulled up the dev video for Cult, and I really think I need to incorporate some of these concepts.
This game looks neat. I thought of something a while back about building your own spaceship out of parts and see how it would fare in certain situations, but I was thinking 3D. After my foray into XNA 3D, that is on hold for a long long time until I get better at it. Maybe 2D is the way to go like what FTL is doing?
