TROPHY CASE

Good vegetarian restaurants? by zzTopoin Seattle

[–]bluetrust 1 point2 points ago

Annapurna in Capitol Hill is great if you're in the mood for Himalayan food (Nepal/Tibet/India.) It's in a basement too and painted with great hand-painted murals and prayer flags, so it's got that hidden gem thing going for it. I went there twice last weekend. Simply wonderful. Tons of vegetarian options.

I'm a software developer. This is solving a problem I have never had, sorry.

My level code is god awful, how can I clean it up? by Joeeigelin gamedev

[–]bluetrust 0 points1 point ago*

Yeah. Separate your data from the code. The way you're going at it is going to make you sad, if only because it's really tedious. What you really want is some code that looks like this:

for each spawn in level.txt

enemies.add(spawn.time, spawn.x)

Even better would be using a visual editor to generate the map that you're loading in. For 2d top-down stuff, I've used at different times the XML and Lua exports from Tiled before: http://www.mapeditor.org/

Here's what a "level" looked like in my asteroids physics game: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/664907/Screenshots/qlz6.png . Every half second, my game read in the next line from the script and spawned those asteroids just above the screen. Tiled was great for organizing that stuff.

Right now you're a ghost who runs around the spawn building. But someday, it may have multiplayer third-person-stabby combat.

If you do this as a "protest," fuck you. by midnight10in pics

I live in the area and we really do have a minor contingent of self-proclaimed anarchists who like to stir shit up. They seem to be headquartered near Seattle community college. Once every month or do they team up to break windows up and down broadway and spray paint shit, sort of a march/riot, when the cops show up they scatter and only one or two get caught.

PCs you build yourselves are lovely too because there's so much fun to be had in diagnosing why various bits of hardware refuse to work with other bits of hardware. Then sending that hardware back and trying something else only to find out that it was actually a third piece of hardware causing the problem, but only when inserted in the first port! In the second port that problem disappears! This builds character.

Reddit, what reddit "norms" do you refuse to conform to? by fascistgasesin AskReddit

[–]bluetrust 0 points1 point ago*

I think comments that go, "why do I have you RES-tagged as 'polar bear ball massager'," are incredibly lame. They're always off-topic and never very funny.

The runner-up is the obvious asshole jokes, like someone is going to reply to this with, "why do I have you RES-tagged as ____," and that's just sad. I wish I had an autodownvote grease monkey script I could add these people's usernames to. I think it would do a lot of good to discourage the people who add that kind of noise to the site.

All I know is that I hate being forced to use a 4:3 resolution fullscreen on a 16:9 monitor. Everything gets squat and disgusting looking.

You should lug over your home desktop computer. Just sling that sucker over your shoulder, stuff a mouse and keyboard in your pants and you'll be ready to go. We've got monitors if you want to borrow one.

Thanks for letting me know about the link. I'm on my phone and sometimes copy-paste is an adventure. Fixed it.

Thanks for the kind words too! I love that you liked the game.

My game, Nano Ascension, is a tron-inspired 3d platformer with voice acting and a story. Early reviews seem really positive. It's available on Mac/Win.

Also, in the course of making this, my mood went from :D to D: to >:| to :D. Ludum Dare is a hell of an emotional roller coaster.

I got it from a Trader Joes in Seattle. Local supermarkets seem to have it for about $2 more.
