Getting Encounters by bkellyin rpg

[–]blackdragon8577 1 point2 points ago

Typically stores get so many "Exceptions" from WOTC each year. I was in a similar situation and since Encounters doesn't really make money for a shop, as a Friday Night Magic event would, they generally save those exceptions for when they need them to salvage a money making event. It makes sense from a business perspective since a store typically makes nothing from hosting Encounters but they can make money from other WOTC events. However, your shop owner should still be able to order it if they really want it. But don't hold your breath, especially if your store has a decent sized Magic: The Gathering community.

Am I being too mean or too nice? by Zhirpoonin Pathfinder_RPG

There really would not be enough information here to say one way or the other. Did the PC's blunder headlong into a dangerous area without checking for any ambushes? Did they wander into an area that they had been warned would be too dangerous for them? Were they just playing around and not taking an encounter seriously? Do they always heedlessly rush into fights with no though for tactics or strategy? Or was this just a string of bad luck?

Any other information you have on the scenario and the party tactics in general would help.

Cleaning out some old files... I thought I'd share some of the most memorable quotes from some of our sessions. Yes, I collect them and you'll see why. by Metal-Phoenixin rpg

Dragonborn Paladin walking down a hall. Fails his sneak check three times in a row. Finally, in frustration he starts to clap his hands as loudly as possible and yells

"Here kobolds, koblods, kobolds!"

Which allowed the rest of us to flank and ambush them as they rushed for their tasty Paladin treat.

Best way to ease new players in? by CelebrantJokerin rpg

I believe spacespeck is referring to a technique where your PC's try something that may not be allowed or advised and then you say "No, but..." and then suggest a more prudent course of action. For some reason an example escapes me at this moment, but I hope that the explanation would be sufficient.

Give them a hybrid class Monk/Wizard who is blind and schizophrenic with touret's that is true neutral. Make sure that they are a few levels below the rest of the party and make sure that monsters try to single them out in combat because they look weaker. Then start penalizing their exp. if they do not role-play the character correctly or if they try to run away in combat.

Or, don't do anything that I just described and make sure that they do not start with a class or character that is too complicated. Try to help them keep it a little simple during the first few sessions. The first character I ever played was a barbarian in 3.5. It was really easy to learn my role and how to play a character effectively, albeit stereo-typically.

I would likely add a few changelings, however I really want to stick with the scarecrow theme. Maybe use some artifact pumping as well.

I bought a box full of old cards the other day for $20. I pulled about $20-$30 worth of tradable commons, uncommons, and rares. Plus an Enlightened Tutor, Intuition, Serra's Sanctum, and full-art Unglued Swamp. Was very happy with that pull.

With a good old Mirror Gallery there to let you keep them all and give them all massive size boosts.

I understand that it may be common practice, however, is it common practice to ask me to come up with another $1000 in less than a 24 hour timeframe prior to closing?

Unique Monk Background by blackdragon8577in rpg

[–]blackdragon8577[S] 3 points4 points ago

I never even thought of the Hulk theme. However, I think that I would want to eschew drawing parallels to a comic book character as I wanted to make sure that my character is unique and not just based on another work of fiction or a baisc stereo-type. (I understand that that is basically impossible, but that is the dream.)

I am running 4E so my background is born under a bad sign. This makes me very unlucky. The hazy part I left in intentionally to leave the possibility that maybe something is stalking him throughout his life and doing these things to people around him and causing these bursts of anger, or maybe he blacksout/is taken control of and commits these brutal acts himself. I tried to work in several easy hooks that the DM can use to weave him into the story. As the story progresses we will kind of see what direction it is going in.

[–]blackdragon8577 2 points3 points ago

I would agree with this. It seems to scale with the power of the user for sure. That is why Gandalf was terrified of it and was so wary of anyone but Frodo possessing it. Becasue Frodo was the most pathetic, powerless creature in the entire world ;-)

[–]blackdragon8577 5 points6 points ago

This would mean that he would.still have an.opportunity to kill your guy unless he specifically passed priority back to you. That is why in high level events you will see each player specifically ask if an action resolves and then wait for that answer. The same should hold true for any game that you play. Especially when your opponent has an.obvious answer on the field.

TL;DR: Opponent was fine in making that move as long as they never specifically passed priority.

I am sorry to hear that. I do feel for people who have real learning difficulties like dyslexia. Just to let you know you can download the reddit enhancement suite (just google it, I am at work and can't link) to include a spell checker for all posts and comments. It has helped me out a lot and can help you steer clear of the grammar nazis.
