Well, to be honest, it's not a question of what hasn't he automated, but, more what has he (lights and curtain) pretty much everywhere after there in the video was him showing different ways to control this basic functionality he built. My point is, the mechanical automation is minimal and adding channels for control while it does take up time to show off in a video, isn't the same as adding functionality. Consider : when would you be without your phone, but, have you tablet or any other number of scenarios where more automation rather than more control venue would be beneficial.

So basically, he controls the curtains, and various lights through a number of different means. It would be more impressive if more than just curtains and lights were automated.

TIL that as of April 2010, Bill Gates had donated over $36,854,000,000 in his lifetime, which is more than half of his current net worth of $61 billion. by davidvstheworldin todayilearned

"Wealth creation isn't equivalent to charity, it's superior." Why is that? Charity is necessarily helpful to people in need, wealth creation can be, but, isn't based on definition like charity is.

In regards to you first comment: just like you beleive I cannot gauge charitiy's effect on apple's business i can simlarly assert that neither can you and in the same way that it may have been a necessary business decision it also may not have been. In regards to your second comment: to believe that generating wealth is the equivalent of charity because charity cannot exist without wealth is inaccurate. Finally arguing that smartphones improve our lives is accurate, but why the product must be apple made to improve their quality of life I don't understand.

You seem to be working under the idea that if Apple contributes to charity they go bankrupt, this is inaccurate. Also, the premise that Jobs has allowed Apple's shareholders to donate rather than the company doing it directly seems a little bit silly because all of the income will be taxed and the amount ending up to the charity will be lessened. The reason why any companies donate to charity is because they can't necessarily rely on the rest of society to do it without the example being set by companies themselves. And, are you really trying to argue that someone having an Apple product improves there lives in any way other than padding Apples bottom line which doesn't end up going to charity. Ultimately, under the argument that a companies charitable efforts are really the sum of it's shareholders efforts than aren't you really saying that no company actually needs to do charity work, I've pointed this out before, but, money coming to the stockholder A) has no guarantee of making it's way to charity and B) will be taxed and in other ways lessened so the charity ends up with less and people like Jobs with more.

I'm noting that: companies who contribute charitably are better for society, and, Apple's ability to do so was lessened by Jobs.

I'm not going to pretend to understand all the internal finances of companies like apple, but, what I can note is how other similar companies perform charitable actions at a much higher level.

What's the point of the company existing if it's not charitable. Also, Jobs wouldn't need to cash out to donate personally, he could donate smaller but substantial amounts, the idea of him waiting while it may work in theory, we can see in practice that it was never actually donated.

To be fair, I'm no where near as "cash rich" as Steve Jobs yet, I manage to donate to charitable causes on a regular basis. His wealth was "tied up" because it was invested in stocks, sell stocks donate; simple as that. In addition we aren't saying to donate on the same scale as Bill Gates, but, how about at all? In addition, saying that he got rid of the philanthropy at Apple to "turn the company around" isn't the same as a justification, it's not even a reason.
