You could use an SD card and an SD card reader, then change the switch on the card.

Wouldn't a USB drive with the "offline" installer be a better choice?

Doesn't Carbonite store previous versions of files? If they're not available to you through the website / application, I'd contact their support line and see if they have any recent backups that they could pull the data from.

You could create a desktop wallpaper consisting of "This laptop is stolen property belonging to X corporation" and a screensaver that has the same text which starts after 1 minute of inactivity. Bonus points if you disable the screen from turning off. Disable him from changing these settings by using a group policy or some sort of registry hack. Bootscreens and Windows login screens can also be changed and will stick around if someone tries to create a new account (If they have the rights on the machine to do that).

If he has a Facebook account logged in, there's always the public shaming approach. "This laptop is stolen and I'm too much of a dick to return it" posts might be interesting.

In Windows 7, I can adjust the power management settings to slow down my processor in the advanced power options. Set the percentage to something like 10% and it will be frustratingly slow.

I can't remember, though if Word has an option for watermarking, you could add something like "Created on a stolen laptop by X corporation" at the end of every page.

You could erase the hard drive and reinstall Windows, then attach it to your TV for playing old games and watching Youtube.

I have a nice gaming desktop (Core2Quad Q8400 2.6 GHz, 4 GB RAM, GTX 560) for all my games, though I occasionally buy games specifically for my laptop, which has a 1.6 GHz Athlon Neo, 2 GB RAM and a Radeon HD 3200.

I remember trying this config and it still ran awfully on my Acer Aspire One in the more open areas.

Might as well thermite the drive and buy a new one, just to be sure.

You could just buy one of those $120-200 tablets and rig up a dash mount for it.

They do have an x64 version (I've actually used it for a few months to avoid Vista), though what I was trying to say was that the OS only works on the Intel, AMD, VIA, ect machines, compared to PPC, ARM, Itanium, ect types of CPUs.

Nope, Windows XP only runs on x86 CPUs. You could potentially use one to login to a Windows machine with VNC or something, though it definitely won't run natively.

Android phones tend to have more background processes running and larger screens. The iPhone also has the benefit of having the software written specifically for the device it's running on, so I guess the power management can be heavily tweaked for the specific hardware in the phone.

My Nexus S has no problem getting through the day now that I have a custom ROM on it, though few people will actually do that. While I like the ability to install my own OS on the phone, I would prefer having the phone work better out of the box.

As far as I know, the CPU is doing all of that heavy lifting until a proper driver is written. And yes, those parts are pretty cheap though the Raspberry Pi is also created by a charity, so they're able to be produced cheaper. I don't think the creators of the $74 computer are doing it for charity, so it was probably more expensive to design and manufacture.

While it's more expensive, it seems like a decent middleground between the BeagleBoard and the Pi.

I'm fairly sure Microsoft said that they would have some sort of tutorial / info screen that guides you through the new interface.

Personally, I've been using Windows 8 on my laptop/netbook (1.6 GHz Athlon Neo, 2 GB RAM, Radeon HD 3200), 1336x768 screen). I use it mainly for school work and some very light gaming / time killing and find it quite nice. The startup time is improved, Windows search is a lot faster, the new task manager and file copy dialogues are nice. Another nifty feature is Windows+X, which gives you easy access to things that used to be buried (E.g. Disk Management).

However, I'm definitely not installing it on my mom's computer! She's still figuring out Windows XP.

Wifi, better CPU, a nice enclosure and an OS that probably has GPU acceleration for the GUI. Plus you can actually buy one. I'd say that's worth $74.

Apparently you're not limited to Android using this device. You can install any Linux distribution that is compatible with ARM, assuming it supports the hardware inside.
