Hypnotoad gets an upgrade by az78in AdviceAnimals

I found this jeweled frog in an antique store. I figured he would make a decent wealthy version of either Bachelor Frog or Hypnotoad. Someone with some serious Photoshop skills can take it from here.

How far would taxing churches go towards balancing the budget? by hipptrippin economy

[–]az78 0 points1 point ago

I am not advocating ending not-for-profits or saying that religious organizations should not be held to the same standards, but rather just increasing the scope of the debate.

Think about it: In the 1950s, all the major players were for-profit companies. Nowadays, large not-for-profits also play a large role such as hospital companies, universities, and international NGO's. What would happen if we taxed them at even 5%? Or at least removed their property tax exemptions?

Think about a collegetown for a minute. A university sucks up all the valuable land and assets, but pays zero dollars in local taxes. What would happen, on at least the local level, if that changed?

It's an interesting topic to think about, if nothing else.

Here is a better question: How far would taxing all not-for-profits go towards balancing the budget?

I wonder how this compares to other Presidential candidates in other cycles.

New Hampshire: Obama 51%, Romney 42% by magister0in 2012Elections

[–]az78 0 points1 point ago

Interesting fact: The last time that NH's 4 electoral votes actually mattered was in 2000. If Al Gore had won NH like he was supposed to, then the whole debacle in Florida would not have mattered as Gore would have had 271 electoral votes.

Every state counts.

Why Does Israel Get A Free Pass On Its 200 Nuclear Bombs? by Ijob911in worldpolitics

[–]az78 -1 points0 points ago

It's a valid point, but it would be more accurate to say "Because the U.S. does not view Israel as a belligerent threat to its neighbors and the region."

Why Does Israel Get A Free Pass On Its 200 Nuclear Bombs? by Ijob911in worldpolitics

[–]az78 0 points1 point ago

Israel did not sign the Nuclear Non-profliferation Treaty (NPT). Nor did India or Pakistan. The argued logic is that Iran and North Korea signed then lied about it, and thats why they are in trouble. But of course, there are politics about it too.

Hillary Rosen speaks the truth: "Ann Romney has never had to work to pay the bills and should not be her husband's surrogate on women and the economy." --- American women couldn't agree more! by [deleted]in politics

This is what bothers me about the whole thing: MR. ROMNEY, YOUR WIFE IS NOT A STATISTICALLY VALID SAMPLE! SHE DOES NOT SPEAK FOR ALL WOMEN! IT'S POMPOUS AND ARROGANT TO THINK SO!

Sorry, I had to get that out. I wish that was the debate we were having instead.

General election poll: Obama's leading Santorum by 3, Romney by 5 by magister0in 2012Elections

[–]az78 1 point2 points ago

Rasmussen has a long history of overestimating the chances of conservative candidates. Something with how their model works make more conservative candidates have better numbers. Nate Silver had a piece on this a while back. I think the averages from RCP are a better tool to use, which shows Obama +4.8 on Romney and +5.0 on Santorum.

National Gallup poll: Romney 29%, Gingrich 28%, Paul 13%, Santorum 11% by magister0in 2012Elections

[–]az78 0 points1 point ago

This is misleading. Gallup does a 5 day tracking poll where they average the results. Gingrich has surged the last couple of days, whereas his pre-surge numbers are still pulling down Gallup's numbers. If the trend lines indicate anything, Gingrich is probably up by double digits right now. This bounce may or may not last very long, though.

Why Isn’t Illinois A Bigger Story Than Greece? by tarkayin economy

[–]az78 8 points9 points ago

If Illinois fails, the US gov't WILL bail them out. If Greece fails, then the EU will consider bailing them out after months and months of prolonged negotiations once much cursing in multiple languages has commenced.

Germany has the economic strengths America once boasted: Germany with its manufacturing base and export prowess is the U.S. of yesteryear, an economic power unlike any of its European neighbors. It has thrived on principles America seems to have lost. by davidreiss666in worldpolitics

[–]az78 0 points1 point ago

I never said the FED doesn't engage in currency manipulation - that is their entire job to do so - but they do nothing even close to what other countries do. They manipulate the dollar to try to keep inflation around 2 percent - not to increase our exports.

[–]az78 3 points4 points ago

Germany is on a weak currency that is watered down by the rest of the weak economies of the euro-zone. If they were still on the old German mark, then the value of it would have skyrocketed with exports. As the value increased, exports would slow. It's all one huge balancing act.

In other words, the US could have a strong industrial base too if we engaged in endless currency manipulation like Germany (legally) and China (illegally) does that distorts market forces. This is NOT about principles and values.
