What is it with the AsianWhitePictures Spam? by russellvtin TheoryOfReddit

[–]aurath 26 points27 points ago

This is baffling. It's so removed from the normal commercial spam that I'm used to seeing that I cant help but think it comes from some demented mind with a racially motivated point to prove.

Beauty in simplicity and (the pursuit of) truth - a guide to basic critical thinking by TuneRaiderin pics

I was under the impression that multiplying entities is synonymous with making unnecessary assumptions. I was trying to make the same point about the razor being unrelated to simplicity as you were.

I suggest not being so condescending on the internet, asshole. Edit: I know I'm a dick, I'm drunk.

No, that's not right either. Occam's razor states that the hypotheses with fewer new assumptions is most likely correct. Notice how the pentagram shape has many more lines that we have to assume exist, there being no data points to support their existence. The pentagon model does not add any unsupported lines, and fits the data just as well.

A common misconception is that Occam's razor addresses complexity. Occam's razor could support a more complex hypotheses over a simpler one, as long as the simpler one doesn't make additional assumptions.

One of those things that blows my mind, but nobody else I know understands. by koobaxionin geek

[–]aurath 1 point2 points ago

Ya I've been trying to explain this to my friends for too long without them realizing the significance of it. It blew my mind back in high school. It's almost analogous to us using the laws of physics to design a computer to simulate the laws of physics.

Are there any objects or substances that you can see with your naked eye but won't show up in a picture? Or the other way around? by TheStupidZebrain askscience

[–]aurath 0 points1 point ago

Not quite what you were asking, but related. In middle school we had old os9 iMacs in the computer lab. They had a power button on the front of the monitor that would glow softly. I discovered one day, while screwing around with a camcorder, that if you viewed the glowing power button through the camcorders display, you could see it pulsing slowly, but to the naked eye it was a steady intensity. I know now that this must have been because of the mismatch between the camcorders refresh rate and the flicker of the led in the light, but it sure fascinated the hell out of me in 8th grade.

Antler man is my uncle! He does this several times a year, he usually hits at least the tour de france and the tour de california. I drank coffee out of a mug with his picture on it this morning. He also often runs with longhorns on and has several different helmets for it.

I don't know. What's the trolling potential in his /r/skyrim and /r/harrypotter posts? Seems to me a troll would have had his lulz in the one thread, then moved on. Why pursue it with posts that any sane person knows will not got any attention?

And remember guys, every time you get stoned and giggle at nothing, you're just proving the politicians right! We need to realize that having fun while stoned is only hurting our image! The only allowable activity while smoking is writing letters to your congressman! You should all be ashamed at yourselves.

do you have to be that guy?

You saying this makes you no better than those who try to convert us.

I use to struggle with a similar argument until I meditated on this quote for a bit.

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.' ~Isaac Asimov

Our knowledge is better than his ignorance. We have well founded reasons (The scientific method) to believe so.

On the other hand, there's a reason I try not to evangelize to Christians, especially the ones that post on r/atheism. They seem at least willing to step outside of their comfort zone on these matters, and I believe if they are intelligent and seek the truth, then they will figure it out for themselves. However, when a fellow atheist puts our scientifically rigorous views on the same level with their faith based views, I feel the need to speak out.

Can you eat stones? Can you survive on stones? No, just like paper money, stones can only be traded for the things you actually need. So they have little more to them then just some object that someone may want to pay you for. I understand there's an important economic difference between precious stones and paper money (debt as money and fractional reserve banking and all that), however they differ little from paper money on a basic level. Like paper money, they are rare (sometimes artificially), and other people believe them to be worth something. This, like paper money, is the source of their value.

And how are precious stones any different? Money has value for two reasons: Artificial scarcity, and universal acceptance. Precious gems are valuable for the exact same reason.
