Hi r/atheism, what I don't get is, how does posting images *anonymously* on the internet translate into upholding 'freedom of speech'? by long_time_lurkerin atheism

[–]atemyballs -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You already have the freedom to do just about anything as long as you are anonymous ... How can you make a statement about your freedom if you are anonymous?

Haha, finally someone here with some sense. No one's gonna take you seriously, especially so if you are a 4chan, r/atheism or youtube user.

If you really fancy yourself as a 'freedom fighter', you guys are definitely the most ineffectual ones in history.

It's just that you had yet to come out and clarify your position

Err, I repeat, I already clarified my postion in my post:

In fact I am also against the concept of "regular" civil unions or any form of legally-enforced marriages [...] If you think that giving legal priviliges exclusively to hetero-sexual married couples is unfair, then why not oppose those priviliges?

I don't care if the title is misleading or not. If you didn;t read the post it's yr fault

but you seem to only question the extension of these benefits to gay marriage.

No I am not. You need to read my post more carefully.

An analogy: Let's say state-sponsered Christian schools are allowed in US but Muslim schools are not. Muslims do an uproar saying unequal treatment, we need equal rights, we shouldn't be discriminated against, there should be state-sponsered Madrasas too. So, in the name of equality, would you support the Muslims? If not, are you guilty of 'advocating unequal treatment by proxy'??

Same situation here with except with state-sanctioned marriages.

You are just a kid, aren't you? Your choice of words gave that away.

Nice kid though, you didn't use any swear words when you were emotional. :)

No one asked for your opinion. You were supposed to answer my question. Instead you are hell bent on proving that I am 'intolerant'.

Go away. I don't need your opinion or your answer anymore.

Eeek, that was pretty emotional. I hope you don't grow up to be some crazy feminist.

:(

I tried my best with you.

It's like saying you don't support desegregation.

No, its like I support other ways to do the 'desegregation' and not the particular one under discussion.

I am getting a bit annoyed with you. I don't like you trying to put your own 'twist' on this. You trying to prove something here?

difference seems to be pretty obvious, but here you go anyway:

not supporting = not giving my support

opposing = actively opposing, like voting against it

You really didn't read my post.

Secondly, not supporting gay marriage is not the same as opposing gay marriage.

It's in my post (you didn't read it, did you? you just read the title.). IMO government shouldn't be in the marriage buisness at all. OK, right now it is the norm for governments to enforce marriages, but IMO marriage is a cultural thing, it should be separated from the government, like the separation of the Church and State.

I haven't watched the episode, so not angry over it.

Myself, I would get angry (not offended but angry) when someone makes the pictures/cartoons with the deliberate and sole purpose of offending Muslims. I wouldn't get angry if the pictures were used for artistic or academic purposes. Only if it was made with the deliberate intention to insult us, like the pictures posted in 4chan and r/atheism. It's just an ego thing. I am like "How dare they think they can insult us and get away with it". It's the normal (and childish) human reaction to perceived insults and slights. It has got nothing to do with my religion, I am not religious anyway.

edit: Come to think of it, I never really feel offended by anything, only angry. Are they the same thing or what?

Remember our previous discussion?

they created the movement themselves and created change themselves. no one did it for them and had they waited for someone to do it for them, we would still have slavery and unequal rights for both groups. So yes, THEY, US, WE MUST DO IT OURSELVES.

Today I saw a disabled man and I immediately thought of your comments, and the full absurdity of your view-point struct me then. So, you say they MUST do it themselves. What about people who have cancer? By your logic, we shouldn't help them either because they MUST find a cure for their cancer themselves. If I say we should help them, you will accuse me of trying to imply that people with cancer are weak/stupid who are incapable of finding the cure themselves.

I hope you were just having fun with me, and you seriously don;t believe what you said. OK Bye.

Why are so many engineers religious? by lewiein atheism

Well then your example was wrong:

"Do you really NEED to have THAT much power? How about if we just..."

Engineers would calculate what the exact amount of power would be needed to get done the work done. Scientists will just say what needs to be one, not how it is to be done. Scientists will say we need this much Tesla magnetic field to accelerate the electrons to collision speed. Engineers will say ok, we will put this much power/current into our coils to make it happen.

If you can't put yourself in other peoples shoes and need a reason beyond that

You are just another one in the long line of redditors who just read my title, ignored my wall of text and came to the conclusion that I don't believe in equality for gays. Read my post and the specific questions I asked and you will understand what the discussion is all about.

The engineers then build to specifications - no questions as to "Do you really NEED to have THAT much power? How about if we just..."

It seems you are definitely not an engineer. Engineers build the specification (work out the details and design a system that meets the requirements). Their clients (scientists in this case) just tell them their requirements (functions, features, "how it should work" etc).

If the political system of 'my secular nations' is that broken (and I don't really think it is)

Yup,

100s of thousands of innocent civilian deaths in the 21st century by US, UK etc ---> political system not broken.

Exactly 2 people (afaik) were executed for apostasy in the 20th and 21st century in Muslim nations ---> political system evil and irrevocably broken.

Yup I see the unbiased logical reasoning behind your arguments. Pardon me for trying to correct you.

the USA is not a theocracy

And see where that has got us? 100s of thousands of innocent civillians in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan dead due to 'collateral damage'. But somehow issue of death penalty for apostates is more important (a death penalty system that is by and large not practiced in most Muslim nations, but still you choose to focus on that rather than on the gruesome crimes of your 'secular' nations)?
