TROPHY CASE

Haste: Haskell to Javascript Compiler by Davorakin haskell

[–]arnar 0 points1 point ago

In what ways do you feel that it is better than [Ruby,Python]?

But I don't. I do think it is better than PHP (for an example). It has a more flexible object model, ways of overriding behaviour, and probably most important of all, functions are first class.

JS' biggest problem is that it has slightly non-standard semantics. Prototype inheritance is often misunderstood, and type conversions and how they are overridden often bites you in the ass if you are not totally on top of what is happening.

Not sure exactly where "not worthless" became "high quality" in our exchange.

one of the worst languages ever created, with absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever

You say things like these and then complain about the lack of substantive arguments on the contrary. For example, JS and Python/Ruby have more in common than you think. There is plenty of material (including a book) detailing how you can avoid the design-flaws of JS to reveal a quite usable dynamic language. Nobody is claiming it is a superior or high-quality language, but it's certainly not worthless.

In any case I have a feeling you won't be persuaded to think differently, and I don't really mind.

What "most profitable company" thinks javascript is a good language?

My response was to the phrase "JS is worthless". I didn't say anything about other people's opinion of it. In any case, besides Google, companies that certainly make money on it include Facebook, Github, <insert whatever webapp money maker here>. It may not be the perfect language - but certainly isn't worthless.

Your point about GWT is fair.

Perhaps it is you that needs to do the learning. Javascript is on par with PHP, it is an absolutely terrible language.

I disagree, but I'm not sure I want to argue about it with you.

Creating QR Codes with Python by driscollisin Python

They don't suck, they're just pointless. Smartphones are just as capable of reading text links (99% of what QR codes represent) - and as a bonus, they are human readable as well.

Good luck then! I'm off at the end of May so I'll likely miss it, but will keep an eye out for your thesis.

Haste: Haskell to Javascript Compiler by Davorakin haskell

[–]arnar 1 point2 points ago

it's fucking worthless

That's nonsense. Ask some of the most profitable companies out there.

Perhaps you should take a deep breath and actually learn JS. Then you might see that it's not the language itself that is the root of your problems.

Hej! Very cool work. Will you give a presentation of your thesis at some point?

Extracting colors with Colorific by dhotsonin programming

But with shading effects (for example in the Google logo), the exact color the designer picked might not necessarily even appear in the image.

That said, I'm not conviced it's better than your method.

Amazing! What are you doing after you graduate? If you happen to go to Chalmers, make sure you join the sailing club!

Wow, nice boat and sails. Let me know if you ever need some crew. :)

My club will be there, Chalmers Segelsällskap, with two Expresses. However, I won't be there the rest of the season. I can't say sadly because I'm going for a week of sailing in the Adriatic and then three months in the Bay Area (even windier than Gbg!).

[–]arnar[S] 1 point2 points ago

Of course we don't heel that far the whole time, the photo is carefully chosen from a strong gust just before I ease the main. :)

We are a poor student sailing club with two boats, so only one of them has new sails (the other one with the more experienced crew), so we were sailing with rather old ones, and definitely only one set. We have to trim the main as hard as possible to get any height (if that's the English term), and then gusts will simply push you sideways instead of forward. The wind was about 12m/s, so I'm guessing 15-16 in the gusts.

Nope, Albin Express, which is a Swedish boat common in Scandinavia, Netherlands and the Baltic sea.

No, don't know, but looking at the compass it seems a bit more than 45°. Of course it's just momentarily in a gust as it's a snapshot before I eased the sheet.

And yes, the picture is a screengrab from a GoPro video.

"The captain is the king of his ship" -- but up to what point? by neodiogenesin sailing

[–]arnar 2 points3 points ago

I still give them a say, as long as they agree with me.

:)

I skipper as well, but for recreational sailing and cruising. I ask my crews to remember they are extensions of my eyes, ears and decision making powers. Ultimately I take the responsibility, so I make the final call - but if anyone has slightest doubts that it's the right one, I want to know.

The tricky thing is when you still disagree, and need to tell the person in a way that doesn't discourage them from making further input.
