Is it common for Americans to not take their shoes off when entering a house? by rowdyonthevexin AskReddit

[–]archpope 0 points1 point ago

I would venture that <1% of Americans take their shoes off when entering a home. The default is to leave them on in almost every part of the country. The only homes I've been into where I've been asked to take off my shoes are either headed by people of Asian descent or people who admire Japanese culture.

I will be 43 next month, and in all that time, I have been asked to take off my shoes before entering a home four times. I had to remove my shoes a lot more in the six weeks I spent in Japan and never entered a private home.

If it is art, it's only because half the room is not tagged. If the entire room were tagged, it would just be considered vandalism.

tagging ≠ art. Graffiti can be art (c.f. Banksy), but this is not.

You have a microwave-sized device that will create 1,000 perfect copies of whatever you put in it. You can use it three times. What do you put in? by Anglophiliain AskReddit

A jar of stem cells. That way, I'd have enough stem cells to put them next to a Shakey's Pizza...

I'd run it empty, so it would create a thousand copies of itself. That way, I could copy more than three things.

Isn't this frenzy over gay marriage an answer to the wrong question? Shouldn't the question be: Why is government involved with marriage in the first place? by veoeluzin politics

[–]archpope 0 points1 point ago

OK, how 'bout this? As of [given date], ALL marriages in the US are converted to civil unions. The government no longer deals in marriages at all for anyone, but any two (or more) people legally able to sign a contract (except corporations) can get a civil union.

[–]archpope -9 points-8 points ago

And therein lies the problem. Where do you draw the line and say "these people can be married, but these people cannot."? If you are going to change the definition to allow a new group to the list, you MUST show definitively why this one group is allowed to join the party that is not also applicable to other groups. This isn't slippery slope; it's unintended consequences. Eventually pedophiles will ask, and we will give them good reasons why they can't get married. We don't have good answers for why people can't marry more than one person, why a person can't legally have a concubine, or why someone can't marry their mom. At least, as of now, I have not heard a single argument as to why we should allow same-sex couples to get married that is not just as applicable to the previous three that I mentioned. In fact, many of the reasons I hear promoted so vocally would also be applicable to pedophiles, such as "people should be able to marry anyone they want."

And because this line cannot be drawn in an uncontestable way, it must be removed. Or the government must admit it has an interest in promoting the nuclear family above all other types of relationships, and the rest of us are not equal so tough shit.

Reddit, can you figure this out? by drobnobin AskReddit

[–]archpope 1 point2 points ago

Yes, I was entirely expecting that this could be solved without research. "Don't bother guessing, you will know when you find the solution." That leads me to believe it's like a word game, where finding a common pattern using only the list is key to the solution. I would also not call this "simple."

North Carolina After the Amendment [1:31] by Valenaxxtein videos

Agreed, except for the Arc of History part. It always bends toward tyranny until it breaks. Then it starts to bend again to a different kind of tyranny.

[–]archpope 1 point2 points ago

Very true. As I said elsewhere, I do think this is the answer that the professor intended, but populations do change, and with a 500-foot range for Denver's altitude, he could have simply picked a different point, rendering the entire riddle subjective.
