The fact that the "slient majority" upvotes funny pictures doesn't mean that they're incapable of appreciating anything more sophisticated. People use upvotes to mean "I like this", not "this is my one and only reason for visiting the site" or "I would rather see this than anything else in the world".

The most dangerous thing for the frontpage is stuff that's too easy to upvote... On a user-voted news site, the links that are easiest to judge will take over unless you take specific measures to prevent it.
