What are the best bars in NYC for Euro 2012? by Kevin0924in nyc

[–]alabamf 1 point2 points ago

Eh, not the same since it moved to Webster. I've been going to the blind pig (14th bw 2nd and 3rd, basically around the corner) for champions league/epl games and there's always a decent atmosphere there. It's technically an Arsenal supporters' bar, but even when they're not playing themselves the place is packed with various soccer fans. 4 projection screens and a bunch of other smaller TVs. You can't go wrong.

Has a CL/EC team ever finished as low in league? by Ruud07in soccer

[–]alabamf 2 points3 points ago

Doesn't really apply, but Birmingham City played in the Europa League this season despite having been relegated to the Championship the season before. I thought that was pretty weird/cool.

It's awful. I had it the other night. Halfheartedly reheated meatballs, stale tortilla chips, unmelted shredded cheese... I was drunk as hell and I still couldn't bring myself to finish the whole thing.

NYC introduces Citi Bike - the largest bike share program in the US by mrfoggin nyc

[–]alabamf 2 points3 points ago

This is actually more economical than buying a metrocard. $25 for an unlimited 7 day pass vs $27 for a 7-day metrocard. And I think it would be $1,250/year for monthly metrocards vs. $95/year for the bike share (according to thejimia)?

Though what I think is going to discourage casual users is the lack of a single ride option. $10 is a big commitment if you're only planning on going one way or even round trip. Might as well take a cab.

[–]alabamf 2 points3 points ago

the $10 fee is for 24 hours access. You could take the bike out for 30 mins, dock it at another station, and then take out another bike for no extra charge. The $145 charge is to discourage people from hoarding a single bike to themselves for 24 hours.

Anyone know anything about this Bike Share program? It's supposed to launch sometime this summer. I would use this everyday, no question. by alabamfin nyc

[–]alabamf[S] 2 points3 points ago

well, theoretically you could hop on a bike at one station, drop it off at the station nearest to your destination, and do the same thing on the way back, so you wouldn't have to keep track of that one bike all day. Unless your commute is more than 45 minutes by bike one way, in which case, yeah, you should probably own your own.

Which city needs an MLS team? by muniroin soccer

[–]alabamf 1 point2 points ago

I know I'll probably get downvoted to hell for this, especially since I have a Cosmos crest, but...

NYC getting a second team would not only be great for the city, but for the league as a whole. Right now the MLS is seriously lacking in any organic rivalries (except maybe the Portland-Seattle one) or drama in general. Bringing in a second NYC club, especially a club with as much history associated with it as the Cosmos, could possibly add that certain something that the MLS so desperately needs. NYC is the largest media market in the United States, with a large, young, diverse population that has been brought up on soccer. If a team within NYC proper can bring out these fans to games and create a natural rivalry with the existing NY franchise, NY/NJ has a chance to become one of the first areas of the US where soccer can become a mainstream sport. And if NYC becomes a market where the MLS can become really popular and profitable, then the effects will be felt throughout the MLS, simply by virtue of the way the league is structured. When it comes down to it, the viability of the MLS depends on how profitable it is, and right now, I believe NYC is the only place where putting a franchise would make financial sense for the league.
