To Atheists: The baggage of atheism by vistascanin DebateReligion

[–]agnosgnosia 0 points1 point ago

words also have connotation, not just denotation. so far you've used 'baggage' and 'liability'. both of those are used in rhetoric that gives things a negative spin. liability also implies something that is a disadvantage. if you don't want people to infer something that you're not saying then you should think more carefully about the words you choose.

'cheap' and 'inexpensive' essentially mean the same thing, but cheap connotes something negative.

its pointless to mention any of this unless you've actually demonstrated a god or gods.

saying that its a liability to use logic is saying that logic is a bad thing.

people don't normally bring up the word baggage unless they're calling out a liabilty. saying baggage connotes a bad thing. you really should have picked a different word to convey something neutral.

well then why even bring this up?

is this "baggage" a good thing or a bad thing? using formal arguments that have sound premises and valid structure are how we ensure that something is true. if you throw that out the window then you open yourself up to coming to the wrong conclusion.

where exactly is your argument for god, or whatever you believe in, in the first place? you have to start with that. then you can start critiquing atheist's critiques.

1) are you saying that this means he will reject the god concept? 2) are you saying that this is fallacious for him to reject the god concept because of this?

Logical arguments are not accepted unless they have sound premises.

i know this. im no stranger to logical arguments. what im saying is, is if we formulated what you said into a formal argument, it would be invalid because the conclusion doesn't follow from the premises. you need to

1) have an argument and evidence for god (which you haven't done yet)

2) then you can start critiquing an atheist's critiques

This leads to physicalism as the standard of judging what is valid or invalid

what are you trying to say here? whats the point?

To Atheists: The baggage of atheism by vistascanin DebateReligion

[–]agnosgnosia 0 points1 point ago

He will not accept a valid argument for God's existence unless it is >sound. And for it to be sound he again must validate the premises with >evidence.

1) what arguments is the atheist trying to make? Theists have the burden of proof. theists make their argument and then its up to the atheists to show what is sound/unsound or valid/invalid.

2) you're right that an atheist wont accept a valid argument unless the premises are sound. but thats true for you too. but what follows from that is that if the premises aren't sound or the form invalid, then we reject the conclusion that god exists. we don't say that atheists (or anyone else for that matter) doesnt accept logical arguments because of that.

To Christians: How do you reconcile the ignorance of The Bible? by bronsonbakerin DebateAChristian

[–]agnosgnosia 1 point2 points ago

no,you're challenging the church's defintion of what qualified as heresy in the 17th century, and that included things that contradicted scripture. you're confusing the messenger with the message. galileo was being tried because his research contradicted scripture. i didnt call him a heretic, the church did.

"We say, pronounce, sentence, and declare that you, the said Galileo, by reason of the matters adduced in trial, and by you confessed as above, have rendered yourself in the judgment of this Holy Office vehemently suspected of heresy, namely, of having believed and held the doctrine—which is false and contrary to the sacred and divine Scriptures—that the Sun is the center of the world and does not move from east to west and that the Earth moves and is not the center of the world"

The website that you cited doesnt change the fact that galileo's research was condemned as heresy. That is a legit source, it's an accredited university website.

"Church being 1, holy, catholic, and apostolic means oral tradition of others isn't true?"

Yes. If something contradicts church doctrine its heresy. An oral tradition from pagans would certainly fall in line with that. Galileo's research was considered heresy because it conflicted with 'holy' scripture. His work was put on the index of prohibited books because of that.
