I'm sorry, this post was in the spam filter. It should be visible now. Good luck!

You have three pieces of advice to give to someone who is starting to learn to sing: What advice do you give them? by TengoHambrein singing

[–]afrael 3 points4 points ago

I would not advise that to a beginner. You're bound to create some bad habits in terms of posture, breath and focus if you practice in a car. When you're driving you should focus on driving, and when you're singing you should be able to give your complete focus to singing. Doing both together seems counterproductive and possibly dangerous.

What do you think of the view from my bed? by Blork_Blorkin pics

Same ones?, I bought those over a year ago :P. They still exist! Even though the store I bought them at doesn't have them anymore :(.

My review of the Mistborn trilogy. Comments and feedback greatly appreciated, Redditors! by Kalysiain Fantasy

[–]afrael 1 point2 points ago

I think you definitely pick up some of the great parts of the series; Sazed was my favorite character as well :). Your summary is excellent, however, I sort of felt like you didn't really get into the review very much. If you take out anything that isn't your opinion, you only said that the characters are good and you think that the ending was wrapped up well, and then moved on to recommendations. For a review, that's kind of scant. You also weren't very critical, which is fair enough if you think the book is 100% perfect, but I tend to think nothing is perfect :P.

I personally think it was a great read, I liked the characters and the story fit together intricately and kept me on the edge of my seat. On the other hand, I thought Vin's character, especially in the second book, consisted more of a constant repetition of several traits and feelings than character development. Middle books are always hard, and the plot definitely made up for it, but if you read them back to back, there's just a lot of repetition. If you read the installments several months apart this might not be as much of a problem, so that would be my recommendation.

Generally I would say that it's thoroughly enjoyable commercial fantasy, on the level of for instance Brent Weeks (which is a bit more morose) and David Eddings (which is a bit more happy). I personally haven't read any of Sanderson's other books, so I can only discuss Mistborn :).

Ever wonder who makes those high-tech interfaces for action movies? This guy has done the Avengers, X-Men, Contagion, and more! by bitterorcain geek

God yes. I especially adore how they approached the whole concept about how Stark manages in the iron man suit. The controls are an integral part of this, and they're wonderful :). Thanks for posting the link!

[Critique] 20 F, some training, The Call by hollywoodxftwin singing

[–]afrael 1 point2 points ago

Well the parts that are sub-par is mostly what I already noted, the gap between high and low notes and sometimes there's just a loss of focus. I'm not sure if I can point to different pieces, it's not like I'm talking whole stanzas that are subpar, it's more like half a sentence here and there. I think if you shoot for consistency you're going to solve a bunch of the problems naturally anyway.

Really though, record more and if you can definitely take some lessons. If you really don't hear your issues, you need to record more and really try to study singing (not only your own). Good luck!

I offered to buy a homeless man anything he wanted.... this is what he got... by Brumehin pics

[–]afrael 7 points8 points ago

The issue with homelessness is often multiple problems, not just mental illnuss but very often also addictions and sometimes also criminal behavior. They don't 'fit' in a system that often selects for just one problem, and they often do not voluntary submit to treatment. So I do think that even if we had the most perfect healthcare and support system, there would still be homeless people. However, a lot of progress has been made in supporting people in crisis centers etc before homelessness becomes a fact of life for them (at least in my country, don't know about the US). Prevention definitely makes a difference, even if treatment doesn't always.

My family's lab is (amusingly) afraid of water. This was the only way we could get him into the pool! by whatwouldscoobydoin dogs

[–]afrael 3 points4 points ago

Maybe he's not so much afraid of the water as of not having the ground under his paws. My mom's dog has that, he loves water but he won't actually swim. If that's the problem you can definitely train him on a sloping bank somewhere, if you would want that. It takes a lot of patience though :P.

Interesting voice, you know how to put emotion in there, and you chose a good song for your voice. Pitch, rhythm all that stuff is pretty ok too, so you're on the right track.

Your biggest problem IMHO is the inconsistency, the song is great at some points, pretty sub-par at others. It's sort of on and off and on again, which is a shame. Sometimes you don't really connect the notes well, pay attention to how you bridge between low and high notes. Don't strain or brace yourself for difficult notes. Try to relax, watch your breathing and tell a story. Try to make sure your balance is rock solid before you move on to creating the best performance you can. The potential is there, you just need to put it together better. Good luck!

What are the [speculations] as to the WHY the show made changes to Jeyne Westerling? by ObiWanBonogiin asoiaf

[–]afrael 6 points7 points ago

You're right about her seeming lost in the plot. What I just can't figure out is that in the books GRRM made it pretty clear that women travelling with an army were usually either washerwomen (often old) or whores. Talisa is neither, yet she, as a pretty and highborn girl, somehow manages not to be raped in a camp full of men who wouldn't think twice about raping a lone woman. Considering Robb has the likes of Bolton in that camp, I doubt the Northmen are any different than other camps. I mean, even ARYA gets threatened with rape, and she hasn't even 'flowered' yet. Talisa just being out there on her own makes no sense.

Should you use effects when practicing singing? by foobar3889in singing

[–]afrael 0 points1 point ago

The way you hear your voice is going to be different from the way other people hear your voice. The trick is to connect how you feel like you're doing with how others hear your voice (which you can check through recording yourself a lot). I don't think adding effects will help with trying to make that connection in practice.

Musical theater audition guide by maestro2005in singing

[–]afrael[M] 1 point2 points ago

Great piece! The only advice I would add is not to pick a song that is too difficult. Sure, singing a difficult song shows off your skill, but if you're nervous or otherwise not completely sure about it, it's usually better to go with a simple song. AFAIK music directors are evaluating your potential, not the one performance, they can tell a lot more from a simple song sung well than from a difficult song sung badly. In addition to that, you will probably be more confident singing a song you're completely sure you can nail every time :).

Maestro2005, you made our honor roll for this subreddit, which means you get a gold star! :D.

[Critique] Sang a lot as a kid, looking to get back into it. Advice? by lasersaurousin singing

[–]afrael 0 points1 point ago

But I like your voice sounding adorable! Not many people have natural adorableness in their voice, you should exploit it :P. Not that you need to only sing cute songs, but you could really do something interesting with your voice by embracing that quality :).

Tenor or baritone? by fr0gz0rin singing

It seems like your link does not show up. Just go back to this post, click 'edit' at the bottom and paste it in the text field somewhere, that should work :).

I may be the only one, but Quentyn was my favorite character in aDwD.

[Critique] Sang a lot as a kid, looking to get back into it. Advice? by lasersaurousin singing

[–]afrael 1 point2 points ago

Nice tone, good pitch. Good choice of song, you do a really 'cute' take on it. You do sound a little 'rusty' and hesitant. Rhythm suffers from your hesitation, the song doesn't really 'flow'. Occasionally some relaxation sets in for a few notes and then it sounds really good, but you just do really need to get into regular practicing again. Don't forget the importance of relaxation! Also, do some Norah Jones (without the breathyness), I think that will sound wonderful with your voice.

You're sitting forward a bit, and your wrists are bent a lot. Look into ergonomics for keyboard players, I don't think your current posture is correct. Maybe it's also beneficial to sing with karaoke tracks a bit, until you've polished up the basics again (posture, breathing, etc).

Good luck!

How are people who know nothing about pet nutrition allowed to own pets? by nunsexmonkrockin Pets

[–]afrael 2 points3 points ago

When people say that, just remind them that their life span is probably a lot shorter in the wild, and that you want to keep your pet with you as long as possible. I doubt they'll be able to come up with a sensible rebuttal to such a common sense argument.

Anyone see the new Ars Technica? by Minifig81in geek

I think it's bearable if you put it back on the list version, but the layout with the different size titles in different columns is almost unreadable if you just quickly want to check the news.

Even if he did have power, didn't they make it pretty damn clear that he couldn't be found if he wanted to stay hidden? So unless he turns up of his own accord, there's no way for Sam and Dean to find him.

Heh, that's a very clear answer, thanks. I'll have to fiddle with that some time, as soon as I figure out a project to use it on :D.

I've looked at your website and videos a bit, and I see you've used a variety of materials and techniques, could you maybe expand a bit on why you would use one over another? Or maybe point me to some resources about that? I'd love to know more :). I've only made one small thing in resin, it was fun but I clearly had no idea what I was doing :P.

This week on HBO's "a Game of Thrones"... by EntMDin asoiaf

[–]afrael 10 points11 points ago

He isn't dumb though, and he ruthlessly exploits every advantage he has and loaths to show weakness or lose the upper hand. Leaving a highborn brat running around being privy to all his scheming doesn't seem like his style. Roose just doesn't really care as much about that sort of thing, he's less of a schemer, so for him it makes sense that he wasn't too interested in learning about Arya. For Tywin it just doesn't.
