I'll be visiting 42 of the continental 48 states this year. What's the best local brew in each state? by Simply_Amazingin beer

You won't regret it. Totally worth it for Furious, Wet, Bitter, Abrasive...I could go on but I'm getting thirsty.

DC church recommendations? by ohrmetsin washingtondc

[–]aethericwave 3 points4 points ago

I don't know why people are being so snarky. I don't go to this (or any really) church but I always see the All Souls Church on 16th street NW, just south of Columbia Heights/Mt. Pleasant, with lots of young people coming in and out. It's Unitarian Universalist place if you're into that. Don't know much else about it but best of luck to you.

My Grandpa's take on Gay Marriage by chuckie2389in AdviceAnimals

[–]aethericwave 122 points123 points ago

I was hanging out with my Grandpa and some other (very conservative) family members not too long after "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was repealed. Grandpa said, "I'm all for gays in the military. Sure, absolutely! Put 'em all in the same unit and send them all straight to the front line in Afghanistan. Then it won't be a problem anymore."

Hey you're right! Thanks for that. It's a good reference and I do also enjoy how they even have the option to give you a range of estimates. Nice find, I read the NY Times but I missed this.

Pretty dang cool. I love graphs, no real reason why, but I love being able to see potential progress. Though I do wish there were options to see the effects by changing caloric intake, not just physical activity.

Trailer to "Seeking Asian Female", a documentary about an American man finding a Chinese woman and the documentarian caught in between by LSkyin China

[–]aethericwave 2 points3 points ago

It makes me think of this blog post (minus the whole living in China thing). Actually that whole website is strewn with posts and "advice" from guys like this. Very "cringe-worthy" as some have said but it is fascinating for me to be able to read what goes on in the heads of some of these guys.

Reddit, What's the scariest movie you've ever seen? by wintersleep13in movies

[–]aethericwave 1 point2 points ago

Yep, my Mom took me to see this in theaters...I was in maybe third or fourth grade. Terrified. Absolutely terrified. My mind was just imploding on itself from fear but I didn't want to leave either. I refused to watch it until my last year of college.

Mmm... maturity. by nintendocatin fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

Summer?

No, year-round. Whenever, just because. While I was in college my roommate and I kept icy pops (we called them freeze-e-pops) all year long. Hell, the best Valentine's day present I ever got was two boxes of the things (sigh). My roommate even made sure that there were a bunch of freeze-e-pops in the limo he rented when he got married.

Summer? That's a start. /You still get my upvote because freeze-e-pops

I should probably check my mousetrap more often. by Fegenboin WTF

[–]aethericwave 2 points3 points ago

Yep. According to my friend who does some taxidermy work for a museum the only way it could get this clean is because of bugs. OP should probably check their house for various beetles in cause of further infestation.

The 7-Eleven near my work takes beer requests by oN3xMin beer

[–]aethericwave 1 point2 points ago

About six years ago i was living in Taiwan (where 7-11's are plentiful beyond belief) and they had an excellent promotion one summer. For one month it was "International Beer Month" and each week a different country was featured with select beers being sold at slightly discounted prices. I know that they featured Germany, Belgium and England but I can't remember the fourth country. There was never anything really spectacular but for 7-11 it was downright awesome.

TIL in 1996, a 7-Year-Old girl attempted to become the youngest person to fly across the US. 24 hours into the record attempt, her plane went down, killing her, her Flight Instructor, and her Father. by TheCannonin todayilearned

[–]aethericwave 4 points5 points ago

Geez, I remember hearing about the attempt at a flight very clearly. It's so prominent in my head because I remember I was watching CNN or something interview her before her takeoff as I was waiting in a terminal to board a flight. We were the same age and I couldn't fathom that someone my age was doing something so crazy and brave. I departed before she took off and I never learned what happened to her. Now I know.

I've used Astrill very regularly. Another plus is that their customer service is pretty helpful in troubleshooting etc.

Asian grocery stores? by pojodojoin washingtondc

[–]aethericwave 1 point2 points ago

I suppose. Maybe it seems cheaper because so much else is cheap there, perhaps I was overwhelmed by saving so much on jalapenos.

Asian grocery stores? by pojodojoin washingtondc

[–]aethericwave 1 point2 points ago

It's not an Asian grocery store per se but Best World in Mt. Pleasant has got some cheap cheap tofu. Couple of bucks for a package etc. Otherwise as dreamsforsale said Hana on U Street is excellent

Is there a place like the Gibson / Passenger, but with jazz or other type of low key live music? by diamond_dobbyin washingtondc

[–]aethericwave 1 point2 points ago

They do have cocktails. I only had some beers when there but some folks I was with had drinks which looked very delicious and judging by how fast they went were pretty tasty too. And yes, also lots of wine.

Ever get down on this city? What do you do/where do you go within DC to cheer yourself up? by erinianin washingtondc

[–]aethericwave 0 points1 point ago

I'll second the arboretum, it's gorgeous. But I'll also toss in Rock Creek Park. A long walk/hike especially if you go on one of the "walking only" paths like the Western Ridge Trail it can be a welcome respite from the city and so much else here. There are about a million John Muir quotes I could through at you to reinforce the wonders that nature can do to nurture the soul, but I ramble.
