The ACLU's Stance on the Second Amendment by SocialOrganismin guns

Agreed that they fight the good fight for a lot of issues, but unless they can get behind all of our rights, they are welcome to do so without any support from me.

I got a good deal on a 10/22 today. Thinking about doing some target mods. by J0ed1rtin guns

[–]acceptableusername 1 point2 points ago

Cool, was not aware of that variant. Wal-Mart has had several non catalog 10/22s over the years. I have one of their 22" stainless rifles.

If you visit Rimfire Central, their sponsors have some good deals on parts and so on, and the forums have a wealth of ideas for builds.

Looks like your new rifle is already a bit of a frankengun, with the stainless action and the blued barrel. $100 is an excellent deal on any working 10/22 though.

This may be a stupid question, but how exactly does round "grain" count work? eg. 230gr by Shol-vain guns

[–]acceptableusername 5 points6 points ago

Grain in this case is an old unit of Imperial measure. There are 7000 grains in a pound. Bullet weights, and in reloading, powder charges, are about the only things that are still measured in grains.

DAE Love the smell of a lit match? by BigFatKoolAidin DoesAnybodyElse

[–]acceptableusername 2 points3 points ago

Though I've never smoked, I keep a zippo lighter on my desk, just so I can smell it lit every once in a while. Puts me in mind of the uncle that I used to hunt with when I was a kid. We would get up early, eat toast and oatmeal and drink coffee, and he would sit by the wood stove rolling cigarettes and lighting them with his old zippo.

Polishing the chambers of a .22lr revolver by derrick81787in guns

[–]acceptableusername -1 points0 points ago

I had that problem with a Ruger SP-101 .22. My solution was to take it to my gunsmith and pay him to do it.

I'm more than happy to fiddle around with easily replaceable parts myself, but for something like work on a cylinder, I'd rather pay someone who knows what he's doing.

TIL in 1997, Mattel released a a friend for Barbie, Becky. She came complete with a hot-pink wheel chair that unfortunately could not fit into the elevator of the $100 Barbie Dream House. by TheCannonin todayilearned

A friend of mine was a college administrator, and was in charge of ADA compliance for the school. She had one of those dolls in her office.

One day she brought her young daughter to work, who of course was interested in the doll and began to play with her. After a few minutes, she told her mother, "This doll is fake. Her legs work."

Do any Gunnitors have the Ruger SP101 in .22 LR? by 99CentShrimpCocktailin guns

[–]acceptableusername 2 points3 points ago

I had one of the old ones. Liked it, didn't love it.

Double action pull was pretty heavy, 11 or 12 pounds, single action about 4 pounds. Bought a Wolff spring kit for it, but found that any reduction from the factory springs caused misfires.

Mine had pretty rough chambers, and some kinds of ammo were very hard to extract after the gun got even a little dirty. Had my gunsmith polish the chambers, which helped a lot.

After they discontinued the original, the prices went up a lot, so I was more than happy to sell it at a profit.

Had this rifle for a while it is missing the bolt and a magazine. Any help? by Zombie1297in guns

[–]acceptableusername 7 points8 points ago

Putting as much effort into this as the OP, I'm going to say that any bolt or magazine should work fine.

[–]acceptableusername 4 points5 points ago

Yes, too much lube, but the cases are fine. You can load them normally and the only thing that will happen is that after the next time they are fired the dents will be gone.

TIL that Helium is collected almost entirely from underground pockets produced through alpha decay, it's critical to scientific advancement, and we'll run out. by SuperCliffordin todayilearned

[–]acceptableusername 6 points7 points ago

No, we won't run out. Helium is extracted from natural gas.

The US extracts about 22 trillion cubic feet of natural gas a year, and estimated reserves, just in the US, are over 2,000 trillion cubic feet, which represents about 2% of the world reserves. The helium supply will last as long as the natural gas.

All that is happening with helium is that we are coming to the end of a several year period of artificially low prices brought about by the sale of the helium stored in the national strategic reserve.

My first attempt at my favorite way to cook an egg by ChemEBrewin food

[–]acceptableusername 0 points1 point ago

There's a much easier way to do the eggs than poaching, but you need specific equipment. 8" teflon skillet with a glass lid that fits. Mine is part of a set from Anolon.

Heat up the pan a bit over medium heat and melt a little butter, enough to coat the bottom of the pan. You want the pan just hot enough to barely sizzle the butter. Crack in two eggs. Pour in about half a shotglass of water next to the eggs and put on the lid. Bring up the heat a bit until the water is bubbling.

Watch through the glass. When the yolks first cloud over, they are done if you like runny eggs. Let them go a bit longer, and you will see that the yolks will start to flatten out a bit. Now you have medium eggs. let them go a bit longer, and you will have hard yolks.

The whites will be perfectly white, and they will be perfectly tender like poached. The water keeps the pan at 220 degrees, no hotter while the trapped steam cooks the tops. The white spreads out a little more than poached, but you can fold it under when you serve, or trim it off.
