Songs to learn that can improve your playing? by ZuluPapain Guitar

[–]Zartimus 1 point2 points ago

Here are some i try to keep up on tap. If I don't pay them regularly they require lots of work up to get back to speed and timing.

Cliffs of Dover By Eric Johnson(have fun merging at least 3 tabs together for one good one)

Juice by Steve Vai. The tab from his book is perfect. I would change the two handed tapping stuff to something more improvish and repeatable, like he does live. Everything else he plays note for note.

Always with me, always with you.Joe Satriani. A great intermediate tune to get under your fingers.

Righteous by Eric Johnson. All the tabs are wrong.. The main riff is played near the nut, not up high.

Tumanni notes by Steve Morse. I have never learned this in full, it't an arpeggio masterpiece.

Little wing, Stevie ray vaugh's version of the Jimi Hendrix classic

Voodoo chile slight return, I also prefer the Stevie Ray version but I do the Hendrix rhythm part..

Scarified by Paul Gilbert

Trilogy suite opus 5 by Yngwie Malmsteen

And for a real kick in the teeth, Paganini's 5th and 24th caprice arranged for electric guitar. There are two lick library vids for this which are awesome!

I second Far Beyond the Sun. And good luck finding a proper transcription of FBTS. I've seen them all and they are all different, plus he plays it different live every time. even the lick library video version is almost 70% wrong..

I've been working on a version for years, slowly changing it to what I think is right.. for some of Ynwie's improv's you're better off nailing the scale patterns and shuffling up ascending and defending scales like he does live.. Even he can't play it the same way twice.

It's a pinnacle of guitar playing for sure...

I have a Washburn Rover that does the job. Sounds like a tin can but it has a full sized fretboard.

What are your offbook practice techniques? by Brodelayin Guitar

[–]Zartimus 1 point2 points ago

I compose or collect drum loops in fruity loops software and play over them. Rhythm is my muse. I hear a drum beat and riffs and single line melodies just come crawling out of the woodwork.

Hard part is to see if I'm ripping anything off unconsciously.

Other thing I do is solo over the key presets of my line6 jm4 looper, or do chord progressions and loop them to play over.

This is after scale, sweep, arp practice.. They are no good unless you practise their use making melodies in the real world.

Thanks..

How do I train right hand percussive slaps? by ShoTaRAin Guitar

[–]Zartimus 0 points1 point ago

Slap on the string you are about to play next.. Most beginners slap the whole face of the guitar, intermediates can slap the 6th string pretty good, experts can pick and choose which string to slap and also get into striking notes with the index finger the same time they do a slap.

What song are you trying to learn? I have some John Mayer YouTube tuts that go into slapping a bit..

How is this technique called, and where can i start learning it?? (repost but i wanna know!) by Pyopiin Guitar

He's playing Funkified by Justin King.

Watch the composer playing it for the real kick in the teeth..

There was an ASCII tab floating around years ago. I've seen some people do pretty good versions of it.. It's on my "to learn" list..

If you like that shit check out one of my fav's Thomas Leeb..

Or Preston Reed Antoine Dufour Don Ross Andy McKee Erik Mongrain Etc..

So /r/guitar, what non-guitar music do you like to play/transcribe for guitar? by warenformin Guitar

[–]Zartimus 1 point2 points ago

Violin and Sax. The way they think, especially sax players is awesome. Some runs don't line up well, but the intervals and note choices are awesome. Michael Brecker, Branford Marsalis, Booya!

On the violin side, Paganini..

A question about fingerstyle and alternate tunings? by cookiem0nsterin Guitar

[–]Zartimus 0 points1 point ago

Check this out.

BTW I'm a student of Don's and know Andy from the old Don Ross Yahoo Group. Don used to run sessions out of his home and he'd invite guitarists from all over the world. I've had the chance to play with Andy and a pile of other fantastic players. It's a fingerstyle fan's paradise. Check his website to see if he starts them up again in Montreal Quebec.

Finished recording this today - Someone I Used to Know acoustic - would love some feedback. by thedoglorin Guitar

[–]Zartimus 0 points1 point ago

The extra instrumentation was nice.

Gotye has a high voice, what key did you do it in? He hits a B full voice in the chorus and creeps into a c falsetto. The recorded key is Dm (capo on the 5th fret for me, I'm working out a finger-style vocal accompaniment version. ).

Hey r/guitar, any of you know any free software that would let me slow music down without changing pitch? For transcription purposes. by moonlitmistin Guitar

[–]Zartimus 1 point2 points ago

I've used "Transcribe" for years on the PC.

Amazing slow-downer on my Iphone.

Beats setting my 33 RPM record player so slow it played an octave lower when I was a kid. (I learned Hot for Teacher that way!)

Pretty awesome. Great riff. Only thing I'd change is the initial first pass chord progression in the prechorus? at 1:06 or so, "I've got better ways/to spend my days.." part. They seem a bit out of place in the mood of the song, and the chord changes that follow it are very tasty so you obviously know what you're doing.

Great job!

What he said.

I'm affraid I've hit my speed limit by zachcalhounin Guitar

[–]Zartimus 2 points3 points ago

When I have trouble with a hard passage, it's usually because it's exposed a hole in my technique. At that point I identify what it is I suck at, make up exercises that exploit the hell out of it and lather rinse repeat until the problem takes care of itself. Then I go back to the song.

Also, don't bother practicing the parts you rock at (unless it's meant to be fun-time) more than the parts you suck at. I try to practice the stuff I'm bad at WAY more than what I am good at (which seems to be the opposite way for most people)

You should benchmark yourself with a metronome. Start out at 80 BPM and try and do 6 notes a click, straight ascending or descending. Ramp up to 100 BPM, then try for 120 BPM.

At 120 BPM, 6 notes a click is 12 note per second. Which is fast as all hell (no matter what anyone says, 15, 19, 26 etc.. ). No one is expected to hold this speed and make anything resembling good music but it's awesome in bursts. With this exercise it just gives you a benchmark to strive for and give you confidence that you can hit that speed when you need to for short periods of time.

Stamina also plays a part, which improves with practice.

Booya!
