The Dark Knight Rises - TV Spot #1 (HD) featuring new footage. by Awkward_Hugsin movies

I understand they have to capture the interest for people who are only aware of the previous films, but there have been several times where I've just been like, "Really?"

Where should I buy a car in town? by sturg1djin grandrapids

[–]YSSMAN 5 points6 points ago

The used car market is still pretty over-valued even while getting out of this recession. Some dealers are really working it hard, over-charging for some vehicles by as much as $5000 or more compared to what the cars would have been three or four years ago.

Spending the entire $5000 isn't a good idea, but in some cases, getting a decent used car is going to eat up a lot of that money. Especially if you're looking at higher fuel economy. The thing is, you can get a very reliable, older car, for not a whole lot of money... But it might not do more than 27 MPG on the highway.

Anyway, I did some quick glances and found a few cars that might be worth looking at:

  • 1999 Chevrolet Lumina LS - $2995: The Lumina rode on the GM W-Body platform, which went into production in 1988 and is still in production today underneath the Chevrolet Impala. The mechanical bits are generally rock-solid on these cars, repair costs and insurance shouldn't be too bad. It looks like this one needs new tires, but you can get a halfway decent set at Pep Boys now for less than $400 on all corners. However, the 84,000 miles seems a bit too good to be true. Worth a look nevertheless...

  • 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue GL - $3495: The Oldsmobile Intrigue is based on the same chassis as the Lumina, and uses almost exactly the same mechanical bits and pieces. This one should have the 3800 V6, which is pretty much indestructible. The leather and other goodies would be great for highway trips, not sure how well all the electronic goodies would have held up (windows, seats, mirrors, etc).

  • 1999 Buick Century Custom - $3500 This one would be my pick. The price is very fair, the mileage is fantastic (100k flat), and it has a very good reputation of being a reliable, if a bit boring, car. If I wasn't so obsessed with having a sports coupe, this would be an excellent daily driver that wouldn't need too much daily care. It is boring with every sense of the word, but I suppose, think of it this way: It isn't going to be something seen by the cops. It isn't something that a crook is going to look into breaking into or stealing. Best of all, it's comfortable and quiet. Sometimes that's worth way more than having something "cool."

  • 1999 Ford Crown Victoria LX - $4995 Aside from the W204 Mercedes and the Volvo 240, the Crown Victoria is probably the most-reliable car money can buy. They've been making the same basic car since the late '80s, using technology that dates back to the '60s, and shipping it out to law enforcement, taxi companies, and other government fleets ever since. These things won't break, insurance companies will practically pay you to drive them, the only thing is that gas isn't cheap. I had one for a week while on vacation two years ago, barely managed 22 MPG in the city... But with careful driving, I got it up to 30 MPG on my way down to Key West from Miami.

Disclaimer: I'm still super-excited for the movie

As a Batman fan, I'm having a rough time with the trailers. I still feel like anyone who has knowledge of the character or of the lore can get a good idea of what's going to happen based on these trailers. I'm sure Nolan is going to throw a curve ball, but the hints definitely seem to be there.

GI Joe: Retaliation pushed back to March, 2013 so the studio can convert to 3D by mjsampsin movies

[–]YSSMAN 1 point2 points ago

Didn't Tatum have a second movie opening up the same weekend? It's a wide variety of awkward in the slot they originally had scheduled. That being said, it isn't an excuse for having that much marketing buildup completely wasted to make a few extra dollars internationally.

GI:Joe would have done fine, but it would have gotten blown out of the water by Spider-Man. I don't think anyone was doubting that. Even then, two weeks afterward, TDKR would have destroyed anything else.

It'll be weird to see how they handle this at Comic-Con. We'll see.

When I went in 2010, they were doing it with checking the badges when entering the convention center every time. If they're going to be enforcing it, it should take down some of the scalping, which was very annoying when walking around to the various activities away from the center.

I dunno. I can see both sides of the argument. It may be a hassle, but I definitely see a point, particularly when the event is becoming so popular.

Where should I buy a car in town? by sturg1djin grandrapids

[–]YSSMAN 2 points3 points ago

Different dealers are going to do different things, but sometimes, it depends entirely on the salesman that you're working with. It really boils down to knowing what you want, and what you want to pay for it. I'd suggest avoiding the budget dealers like Motor City or JD By Rider, they tend to prey on people's desperation with a limited number of vehicles with shoddy maintenance history.

I'd stick to the more reputable dealers in town. K&M up on Plainfield is pretty well known for giving great deals on their used cars, Berger on 28th Street has treated my family quite well in the past. I have a love/hate relationship with Fox, certain dealers being a little bit better than others.

If I may ask, what are you looking for? How much are you willing to pay? I'm helping some friends find new cars right now, I'd be happy to fill you in on any leads I have at the moment.

Mazda, Fiat to develop new convertible sports car based on next-gen MX-5 by vlodiain Autos

[–]YSSMAN 1 point2 points ago

That's only if the Code gets the official green-light. But, seeing as how GM seems to be recommitting themselves to performance options and will likely look for an affordable competitor to the BRZ/FR-S, it's a good place to start. The Alpha chassis looks like it is going to be used quite frequently, as will the new 2.5L I4. My guess is that they'd stick both together and make a very interesting sports coupe...

Mazda, Fiat to develop new convertible sports car based on next-gen MX-5 by vlodiain Autos

[–]YSSMAN 4 points5 points ago

It's definitely the best way to re-introduce Alfa Romeo to the masses here in the US. A cheap roadster has always been a popular part of Alfa here in the States, I just imagine what is basically an MX-5 with the 1.4L Multiair from the Fiat 500 Abarth.

Bring it all in for under $30K, not only do you have an affordable roadster, you can also go toe-to-toe with the BRZ/FR-S and the upcoming Chevrolet Code.

[–]YSSMAN 2 points3 points ago

I've got a weird list of sub-models that shouldn't have been forgotten, but were:

  • Chevrolet Beretta GTU/GTZ: GM went batshit crazy and built a front-drive sports coupe that was as fast and handled as well as the BMW M3 of the time

  • Mercury Capri ASC McLaren: Modified Mustang GT bits underneath a well-dressed Mercury is a sleeper indeed

  • Merkur XR4Ti: Well, it's an American version of the Sierra XR4Ti, although ours went without the Cologne V6

  • Dodge Spirit R/T: A Lotus-designed engine, 224 BHP, it had the guts to wipe the floor with the SHO and go toe-to-toe with the M5. The '90s were crazy

The six-speed transmission, and I believe the rear axle were already off the Corvette ZR-1. Lotus didn't skip out on too much when putting the car together.

Anyone here gonna wear a costume to San Diego Comic-Con? by anonymous_potatoin comiccon

[–]YSSMAN 0 points1 point ago

I was looking at doing standard-issue Cerberus or Alliance uniforms for Mass Effect. The armor is too difficult to pull off, and it isnt really all that easy to live with for the hours you're there.

Worst case scenario, we just dress nicely and look like respectable young gentlemen.

[–]YSSMAN 1 point2 points ago

I have a Finn costume ready to go if necessary, but I'd like to do something different. I'd like to do a Mass Effect outfit, but my assembly skills are lacking when it comes to making something that complicated.

I know my friend and I really want to do a duo thing, we've floated the Venture Brothers, Nightwing and Robin, a couple of others (anime, mostly). We'll see what we can come up with, but time is definitely running short!

The brakes and suspension are fantastic on the GT, I definitely support doing the upgrade on the brakes. A friend of mine has been trying to talk me into swapping in a 1.8L from an ST, but since I just rolled over 120k, the damn thing is barely broken in.

As a fellow ST204 owner, thanks for keeping a nice one on the road! Is this a ST or GT? I love my white GT, but have kept it completely stock. I'd like to start tinkering with it, but I've had a hard time committing. The Michigan winters are not kind, even to the best of cars.

Someone identify this car? by exzacklyrightin cars

[–]YSSMAN 2 points3 points ago

The "Corvette Flags" are actually not specific to the Corvette. Back in the late '50s and early '60s, the cross-flags were on almost every Chevrolet vehicle. In fact, the cross-flags were nearly as synonymous as the bowtie itself (which, at the time, wasn't on many Chevrolet vehicles). Eventually the flags fell to be bowtie, but they remained on the Corvette.

According to this article on the Code 130R, GM plans to use the cross-flags once again to denote performance versions of their vehicles, presumably to get away from using the "SS" badge, which should only be attached to high performance options (which will only be the Camaro and SS Performance Sedan).

Anyone else hope they find this place right before the prison? Maybe just part of episode 1? by Zoidiein thewalkingdead

Yeah, it's when they look for supplies, and she ends up figuring out that she's pretty good with that handgun, and then they have sex on the way back.

I thought it was implied that they went to the neighborhood when Shane and Laurie Andrea went to look for supplies and nearly were trapped in that cul-de-sac.

As a constituent in the MI-3, and someone who has been represented by you in both the State and Federal House, I'm obviously well aware of your stance on the issues. However, I have a question about the upcoming election here for the MI-3.

Although the Democrats are currently split between Pestka and Thomas, it is pretty clear that a large number of young and minority voters want you out of office. How are you going to differentiate yourself from the two other candidates? Are there any issues specifically that you believe will guarantee you re-election (aside from having the 'R' next to your name)?

I'm currently on the fence when it comes to supporting you. While I applaud your stance on the NDAA and SOPA, I completely disagree with you on economic policies, and your silence on gay rights issues is unacceptable when Grand Rapids has such a vibrant and welcoming community.

Lot full of new FR-Ss ready for delivery. It twas a wonderful sight. by NorFlain Autos

[–]YSSMAN 9 points10 points ago

It's unfortunate that Scion will be heavily enforcing it's Pure Price scheme on the FR-S. It might prevent dealers from marking up the cars (which will be a problem for the BRZ), but it will prevent you from paying for what the car should be worth, which is at least $1500 less than MSRP.

I was under the impression that this particular car they used had 230,000 miles on it, and was due to be scrapped. The body was changed, and that was about it. When Inside Line tested it, they said they could only go 30 MPH because of what the engineers wanted, but wouldn't dare go over 30 MPH anyway because of a bad vibration in the steering wheel and in the suspension.
