In regards to 3), I'm tired of seeing comments on environmental articles where people are like, "Nature will heal itself!" I would liken "nature"'s ability to heal itself to the human body's ability to heal itself.

Sure, a body can recover from cuts, scrapes, broken bones. But a body has a hard time recovering from getting a limb lopped off, getting shot in the head, or, say, getting SLOWLY AND SYSTEMATICALLY POISONED over a LONG PERIOD OF TIME.

<sigh>. I wish I had some good advice for you. I really do.

I wish there were more open discussion of polyamory in our culture. I think how "wired" one is for monogamy may exist on a continuum the same people are gay, bi, or straight.

People who are monogomous swans could settle down with other swans, and the poly bonobos could have fun openly.

I really, really dislike the idea of you being dishonest with your wife, as it's not fair to her. I wonder whether you just want to keep the companionship, the relationship with your kids, and avoid a messy divorce. But that is really not fair to the woman you married.

And how Jon Stewart just shook his hand and said "thank you." That is how you graciously accept a compliment.

Your daughter is very lucky to have such an encouraging parent as yourself.

When I was in third grade, I wrote a horror story for Halloween that won second place in a (largish metropolitan) newspaper contest.

It was published in our school newspaper and I proudly took it home to my parents. Whether because of the sophistication of the writing (shrug) or the theme of the story (there was an implied murder), my father refused to believe I wrote it.

My dad swore up and down it was plagiarized and got into a screaming fight with my mom over it. I remember sitting there in the dark listening to them fight and feeling extremely hurt, frightened, and sad.

I really think you and your wife should look into an open relationship. I think the traditional monagamy model is broken, but I don't think lying is the answer.

There are dozens of books and many, many online resources that go into working through the issues of open relationships. Just do a search on polyamory.

What if they enjoy each other's companionship? I think he should at least talk to his wife first and see how she feels about an open relationship.

Also, it might be instructive to ask the OP how he would feel if the situations were reversed. What if his wife's declining libido has to do with how attracted she is to... him? Would he be o.k. with her sneaking around to get her needs met on the side?

If my significant other points out an attractive woman and asks me what I think about her, I'm not going to say, "I would fuck her so hard it would split her from asshole to bellybutton". Rather I would smile and just say, "She has nothing on your babe.".

Goddamnit. I wish men wouldn't do this. Oftentimes a dude does this and I can tell he's lying. It just makes me lose respect for him. Just admit the random woman walking down the street is hot and move on.

If you can't be friends with a girl, how can you ever hope to be in a real relationship with one?

I feel sorry for whatever girl you end up going out with.

Did you even read my post?

1) Asking is not an ultimatum, but

2) I did ask. I have a backbone. It was a bit awkward with family and friends. After we announced our engagement, everyone was like "how did he ask you?" When I said that I asked him, people were like. "oh."

There is still a huge cultural stigma against a woman asking a man to marry her. I should know; I've done so. It puts the woman in a very uncomfortable situation; a woman who asks is seen as desperate, or domineering. We're supposed to just sit around and wait for the man to ask, but what if he doesn't?

It's not about the piece of jewelry. That is another societal expectation.

Suggestions for epic, realistic and complex fantasy novels/series? by Memnisin books

[–]Xtal 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Crown of Stars series by Kate Elliott meets your criteria. There are seven novels, set in a believable, complex alternate universe, with a wide cast of characters w/ varying motivations, empires at stake, etc. One aspect of it I particularly enjoyed was the detail at the level of how people lived their day-to-day lives; for example, what they ate. I got the sense she had done a lot of historical research and used it for her novels; it made them feel more fully-realized.
