Lets talk about invisible pink unicorns and about how pretty they are and how they make you feel good... by DumDumDogin DebateReligion

[–]WhiteRastaJ 0 points1 point ago

That's more relying on authority. That's a necessary function of living, but the difference is that you can expect that if you follow the trail long enough, you'll get to the evidence. I've been trying to find the evidence for God and it's been found lacking.

The religious would likely say that their theologians are authorities, and upon them they rely. To the religious evidence for God's existence is not always empirical and external but comes in visions, or intuitive understanding of conditions. To the religious this is evidence, and is repeatable (which is why there are orders that spring up around the teachings of this mystic or that mystic). What it boils down to is this--the religious have their authorities who speak authoritatively, just as scientists do. Everyone relies on the authorities of their chosen worldview. My point, tho, is that we, as humans, can't know everything, so we need to accept certain things--like particle physics. But if we lack the ability to assess the claims of such physicists ourselves then we're accepting the word of someone on something without being able to verify it ourselves. We accept that others (peer reviewers, etc) are able to do their jobs and understand the field. So while your point on authority is well taken, ultimately the religious can make the same claim.

You've looked for evidence of God; have you looked for it as the religious have recommended? A course of meditation with Buddhists or Hindus, for example?

That's just playing the odds and working with a safety net. Not only do those case represent a vast minority of visits to the doctor, but you're also compensated if you become a victim of malpractive.

Ya'd think so. I work in health care and I can tell you that doctors screw up all the time...they're really good at covering things up. But I'd like to point out that you're not compensated as a victim. You're only compensated as a winner in court and the two are not bedfellows.

But, enough rambling. My point is that we, as humans, have to accept information from other sources just to get along in life. Information that we can't always verify ourselves. This, to me, is faith, just non-religious in nature. And I've found that this faith in humans is often as trustworthy as faith in God(s)!

To Christians: Would your religion be less popular without the promise of an afterlife/threat of hell? by tnovain DebateReligion

[–]WhiteRastaJ 0 points1 point ago

Grew up in a religious family; not religious myself.

Religion gives a lot more to people than scary stories about the afterlife. It also binds cultures together. European powers accomplished much of what they did because the Church bound the continent together in a shared faith. Without Christianity European powers, lacking common ground, would have kept fighting each other interminably.

Tales of the afterlife and punishment serve only to motivate people to obey political / temporal authority. Removing that threat doesn't remove religion, which also provides a sense of belonging, vital charitable work, and, in many cases, psychological relief. Removing the threat just makes it more difficult for religion to function as a collector and maintainer of temporal authority.

TL; DR: people would still want religion. It just would be more carrot and less stick.

Pointless. There is no question to debate.

Look, everyone accepts things on faith. EVERYONE. Are you a high-level particle physicist? No? Then you lack the skills or equipment to verify claims made by them. But you accept them.

Another example--thousands of malpractice suits are filed against physicians every year. Does this prevent you from taking medicines a doctor tells you is needed? Of course not. You take on faith that he knows what he's talking about, is competent, and won't kill you.

You've a lot of invisible unicorns prancing around you. The religious have an easier target, that's all.

To Atheists: Why aren't you solipsists? by ForeverSolusin DebateReligion

[–]WhiteRastaJ 1 point2 points ago

If you're a solipsist, then this entire conversation is really pointless intellectual masturbation for you, and I've no desire to live in your spank-bank.

Why are you sitting here talking to yourself, anyway?

As an atheist, what ultimately convinced you that there is a divine being or power, and how has this change affected your views on science and daily life?

I want Sansa to do it. She's the only non-warg Stark kid, and it'd be funny to see Drogon suddenly start worrying about his nails and hairdo.

Awesome. This makes total sense to me.

I avoided spoilers before I'd read the book, but people seemed angry at her rather than disappointed. For a minute there I thought my copy was short a chapter!

Well, I concur, then...I expected a lot more from her in ADWD.

I get the not going to Westeros thing....but there was so much venom flying around I was sure she'd marry into the Lannisters or something. I guess it was built up enough that I expected something world-changing.

The Pharaohs of Egypt and many of the kings of Europe have all been inbred to one degree or another. In fact, the Pharaohs almost completely so.

France - where Freemasons are still feared. by amaxenin worldnews

[–]WhiteRastaJ 0 points1 point ago

An additional criticism:

Politics and religion are forbidden topics in Masonic meetings and are not discussed. There can't really be a 'Masonic' position on any political issue simply because Freemasonry isn't a body concerned with politics. Sure, some Masons may do shady things, but if so they do them in spite of being Masons, not because of it.
