I don't know what you got against indie developers, but you seem like a very hateful person. It's one thing to not like their personalities, but calling their games shit because of it seems a bit silly.

Even if these developers are easy to hate because of their opinions and personality, they have all made very successful games. But it seems like you would rather plug your ears and not listen to anyone else, and rather focus on out of context bad stuff or stuff you just disagree with. You sarcastically point out that Jon Blow isn't a nice guy, yet I fail to see how your attitude is any better.

Woaaah. slow down. first of all, I think you're not quite familiar with the stories going on here.

Edmund loves making games more than anything else, it's what he lives for. When he talks about how terrible it was, it's because they went under a horrible crunch time. They had to finish several months of work in just a few weeks. They got sick, they couldn't do nothing else but work. They had no money, and lived off their life savings to finish this project. And during all this, Edmund had an emergency surgery when his gallbladder failed, and he was $50.000 in debt because he couldn't afford health insurance. These guys were pushed to the limit, and they were closed to breaking down completely and give up. but they pulled though, and got the success they deserved.

And when they were done, they had a vacation. What did Edmund do in his vacation to relax? Make another game. That ended up becoming The Binding of Isaac, another hit-game. He doesn't care about fame, he hates the attention this movie has gotten him, and he has retired from all social media because of it.

If you're offended by them because they "don't love to make games", then you haven't heard the whole story. And to not watch it because some out of context quote would be a great mistake, especially if you call yourself a game developer. No offense, but you seem terribly misinformed, and I hope you'll look into what happened, or watch the movie.

If you haven't, watch the small clip "Growing Up Edmund" linked above, there he talks about how his childhood affected some of his more unknown and obscure games. If you read interviews with him about Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac, you'll hear how much of himself he has put in the games. I think it's necessary for indie games to pour some parts of themselves into the game, it gives the games some kind of soul, even though it's not visible to the player.

Well, as I mentioned above, this movie has gotten a massive positive response from both the public at screenings, and by critics.

I think the problem for this movie will be reaching the people from the gamer culture, as they have very strong opinions about the subjects of this documentary. Some people hate Phil Fish, Team Meat and Jon Blow so much they've decided to shit on this movie in every chance they get, so that's probably affecting some people's views on it.

But I'm glad you'll be giving the movie a chance! :)

Special Features: Judgmental assholes hating on people they don't know? (Not just you, of course)

Here's how I see it: Jon Blow doesn't want games to not be fun, what he wanted was to be understood and connect to people in a way he hadn't been able to before. Some people are like that, and even though his game was a great success, he failed at in doing so.

And Team Meat probably cares more about their fans than anyone else. Tommy stayed up for several days straight after the SMB PC launch to bug fix the game as fast as he could, while responding to each e-mail. And when they got screwed over by another developer making the Mac-port, he bought a Mac and slaved over the computer to give the fans what they wanted as fast as he could. That's dedication, so you can't say they don't care just because they might come off as rude once in a while.

And then Phil Fish... Well... I won't try to defend him, to put it like that. You have probably decided to hate these guys enough already, so you won't care or listen to what I have to say or change your mind about them anyway :p

But even if you hate them so strongly, I hope you'll watch the movie anyway. Just in case. :)

I have not (living in Europe, so I had no opportunity to catch a screening). But I've read a lot of interviews, reviews and so on, pretty much everything I could get my hands on while waiting. And people pretty much all say the same thing, so I have a pretty good idea of how the movie is. I have also talked a bit to the crew.

I'm just trying to get other people as excited and interested in the movie as I am, because I really think this is a special movie which could become really important to the games industry. Judging from the number of non-gamers who really, really enjoyed it and started to understand gaming because of it. :)

They need some variation in the shots to make the movie more entertaining to watch. You rarely want to watch documentaries with just a guy talking to a camera. And a game developer's work place is in front of a monitor, and that's not exactly exciting either. So they spice it up with some effect shots and some panning here and there.

And the film crew shot this documentary over 2 years, so they got to know the subjects pretty well after a while. Phil Fish even said it was weird to not have them around when Fez finally launched. IG:TM is shot, directed and edited by two persons alone, so it's a much more personal relationship than one might expect from documentaries. Edmund McMillen is very shy and becomes anxious around cameras and large crowds, and even him got so close to them he forgot they were there shooting a documentary at times. This also gives the documentary some really honest shots, as they capture direct emotions and responses as they happen.

They focus on these three people, yes. But Team Meat is the "main course". Jon Blow has the smallest part, and he does come off as the "old and wise, but mysterious dude who speaks in riddles". I think you just have to look at him like you look at a fictional movie character.

Fish has stolen a few moments I've heard, because he is really anxious and really comes off as an emotional guy, talking about suicide if he couldn't complete the game and stuff. But overall, I think he will be easier to understand after watching the movie, I can understand people hating him based upon how he acts on internet, but I hope this movie will give him the ability to show why he is that way.

But the main focus is Team Meat, I believe, and their journey through crunch mode. That's where the heart lies in the movie. So I hope you and everyone here will give this movie a chance even if it includes some characters people aren't exactly in love with. :p

I heard they asked him to swim with his glasses on to stay recognizable to the crowd. Without the glasses he looked like another guy, and it could be confusing. So it's not Phil Fish's fault, he was asked to do it.

Weird how such a small shot can put so much doubt into peoples minds :p

If this is the first you've heard about the movie:

IG:TM is a crowd-funded documentary about indie game developers and their games. Over the last years, they've followed 4 developers through different stages of the development process:

  • First it's Jon Blow, the creator of Braid, who talks about the aftermath of releasing a critically acclaimed game. The game was a huge success, but Blow is disappointed about people not understanding the message he tried to give in the game.

  • Second, it's Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes, better known as Team Meat. They're going through hell while finishing up Super Meat Boy, as they have to finish 4 months of work in a couple of weeks.

  • And at last, the infamous Phil Fish, developer of Fez, who is having trouble with finishing the game he developed over the last 5 years. He is worried people has forgotten about the game, and it will disappoint after such a long hype.

It's an honest look into the struggles of being an independent game developer. The movie itself has had big critical success, earning an award at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. At the moment, it's also rocking a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Here is the trailer.

If you want more, here are some clips they've released online:

Control 03:22 (Team Meat talks about how important great controls are to the game. This clip is not included in the movie)

Showing FEZ 01:39 (Phil Fish talks about showing off the game to the public for the first time in 4 years)

Growing up Edmund 04:19 (Edmund McMillen talks about his childhood and how it has affected him as a game developer. This is the first clip released to show funders what the movie was about, and show what level of quality they're aiming for.)

[–]VikingMop[S] 0 points1 point ago

Oh! Yeah, I remember there being some issues in the earlier episodes, sorry about that. It gets better over time though!

Maybe you could start by watching episode 1 of the RC3 play-through instead and see if that's any better?

There is another playlist with the RC3 play-through, but it's in-progress and currently at episode 12.

I know there is a lot of people interested in such content, they just don't know about this series yet. So take a look. :)

Had a thought from the latest episode [Possible spoiler alert] by barrelofmonkeysin Naruto

The Beast Bomb use the same principles as the basic ransengan, just without the rotation. I wrote shape manipulation above, but I accidentally said the wrong one.

Making a beast ball requires perfect chakra control, or else it would just dissolve or explode, instead of keeping the shape. That required a beast mode, no humans had such fine control.

That's why Minato added rotation to the rasengan, to add stability, instead of adding more precision. The higher power came from the nature chakra, but it was not enough to make it fly when thrown like a shuriken, for that he needed sage-mode for adding enough chakra to make it self-sustainable, so it didn't just collapse when he threw it.

By this do you mean you think he can definitely throw it? Just wondering because what youre saying makes sense to me but I never thought about it that way, I just figured it would be like a rasengan.

I don't think he can throw it, but beast bomb is definitively a long range attack, unlike the rasengan. You've seen it several times already. When Naruto lost control against Orochimaru at the bridge, he made a beast ball which would've killed Oro had he not defended himself with the big gates.

Yes I am. That doesn't make me wrong though. No matter how big of a douche I am, that image is still in no way related to Naruto. :p

And I read the manga chapter about it several months ago.

Why not post pictures of an awful cake that failed to get the ratio between the ingredients right? Not as spectacular or entertaining, but still the same "nice resemblance".

It's not a "rasengan version" of the tailed beast bomb. The rasengan is a jutsu inspired by the tailed beast bomb itself. It's the same technique, just with added shape manipulation for stability, which was the main reason it could be done outside of beast mode.

And the point of the Rasenshuriken was to make a ranged attack based upon the rasengan, because the jutsu is very limited when it's a close-range jutsu which needs a direct hit. The beast bomb is already a ranged attack, so there is no immediate need to modify it further if it was even possible.

And no, I don't think it's possible or going to happen. The rasengan is made by pure vanilla Chakra, Rasenshuriken was made by adding an element to it. The beast bomb is already using two elements, ying and yang chakra, and it requires a fine balance of the two, so I don't think adding wind chakra would add anything to it.

[–]VikingMop 0 points1 point ago

No, no, no.

This has nothing to do with Naruto, don't try to force it in by making a "relevant" title. It's not even similar to the bijuu bomb. It's a cool effect, even if it looks like it was converted from a VHS over to a computer through a potato, but it's completely unrelated to Naruto in every way possible.
