Gotta get them thinking somehow. Have to make them understand these kinds of actions will have long term impacts beyond their in-the-moment emotions.

How do Atheists view the mystical experience? by smarterchild1998in atheism

[–]Unikraken 0 points1 point ago

What mystical experience?

I think that the human mind, through evolution, leans towards religious/mystical thought.

The human brain seeks efficiency. This is why we have hang ups like pareidolia and various other shortcuts (people often call these mind tricks or mind hacks). They are the product of evolution finding quick hacks that worked on the African savanna to keep us alive, but ultimately held backdoors to the mind.

Religious mythologies are often much simpler answers than the actual ones, so it's no shock to me that they are popular and have been so since we first started asking questions.

From a scientific point of view, we can't really deny these experiences, since people have had them throughout human history and continue to have them today.

We can deny the claims of the individuals, since the human mind is individually very fallible. Many people claim to have met a god. A number of them claim this after drug use (meaning, they deliberately break their reasoning organ and then claim to gain something real from doing so, but how can the claim have any validity if they've fucked up the only thing they could have used to accurately examine the experience?).

Many people claim to be a god. Is the man in the asylum's experience of being god valid?

are these immeasurable, erratic, mystical thoughts and experiences valuable within the framework of atheism?

There are facts we can derive from these experiences when they are subjected to rational consensus and scientific study, but I don't really think we can gain anything from them individually, that has any bearing on reality. People think funny things when they find ways to bend or break the mind.

It's like looking at yourself in a carnival mirror. Are you seeing an image of yourself? Sure. But is it an accurate one? Of course not, you're using damaged equipment.

I'm not against the spiritual experience, I'm against trying to use the individual spiritual experience to say anything fundamentally true about reality, other than explaining how those experiences take place what they actually are (as in, what is breaking in the brain to create them).

Science is the study and understanding of reality. If something is outside the realm of science it is inherently not part of reality and is a fiction.

There are still people today that think the earth is flat, just as there are people today that think their mystical experiences are real. Do the flat earthers have a valid experience of reality and should we give it merit when we know they are factually wrong?

I don't think so.

I don't think we should be so eager to use children to fight our wars. If adults want to stand up and publicly face religion I'm all for that, but kids are different.

I live in Canada and while my Mom is religious I have never run into a single negative outcome of being an atheist. What are some of your stories of being discriminated against for being an atheist? by uofc2015in atheism

[–]Unikraken 0 points1 point ago

When I came out in high school people wanted to fight me because I "believe they came from monkeys". I got a lot of shit out of it and I was even a quiet atheist, people only found out about me because they specifically asked me about it, then it went down hill from there. This all happened shortly after 9/11.

Why would a god of any kind let that happen? What would you call a person who had the power to stop something terrible who chose to sit on their hands? Why does what you call a man who does that not apply to a god?

If you start off lightly and then contact the ACLU when they resist they will know who did without a doubt and will likely find ways to punish SSA members (taking petty rules to the extreme and punishing to the full extent of the system). You're trying to be rational, I get that, but it won't end well. Anonymity is the strongest tool you have at this point and you're going to throw that away. Remember every nightmare story you've read about atheist students. Has Damon Fowler's story taught us nothing?

Hey guys, I need some Help. by AtheistThrowAway22in atheism

[–]Unikraken 87 points88 points ago

Contacting the ACLU and having them contact the school on your behalf would accomplish more. If they are that blatant about the religious stuff they are going to dismiss anything you bring up, ignore it, or find a way to harass you guys for going through the trouble. It's much better to just have them fear litigation right off the bat.

Femtheist witch-hunt based on hearsay threatens to bar speakers from Women in Secularism by Nillerzin atheism

[–]Unikraken 4 points5 points ago

“Why don’t you just publish a list of names?” you ask. If only it were that easy. Imagine what would happen if I published a list of names based on hearsay alone. I don’t have video evidence. I don’t even have personal experience – people now know I’m a loud mouth blogger, which makes me a terrible target. Even though I trust my friends to be truthful, and patterns of bad behavior make the hearsay convincing, it’s an easy target for skeptics. There’d be a flood of accusations that people are lying or oversensitive.

So, if I understand this correctly, these individuals are running these speakers' names through the mud in the shadows? If these people are called out publicly we can at least see if there is a consensus.

Truth will ultimately prevail where there is pains to bring it to light. -George Washington

I'm not a fan of this kind of tactic with the homeless, they are very often mentally ill and on various drugs, and they can react a number of ways to this kind of questioning that are not logical in any shape or form. Had it been a different homeless person you could have been assaulted very easily. Just a tip.
