The Prime Minister properly supporting Britain (and the Chelsea football team) at the G8 summit by Commander_Monkeyin unitedkingdom

Fair point, well made. That part of my post was, indeed, irrelevant to my argument.

Well, that's the point, isn't it? I doubt whether phillyharper (or you) has actually met Cameron, not to mention that most of the insults are, as I stated, personal invective based on bias (e.g. slimy, useless, wazock).

I just get so depressed that people cannot have a debate about policy these days. It's all about personality and, quite often, class.

I'm a floating voter, BTW. I have voted for all three main political parties. I try to pick the one whose policies I mostly agree with according to their manifesto, and who I think is the right party for the country at that time. I cannot understand people who would never vote Labour, Tory, Liberal, whatever. How can anyone be that closed-minded? Things change.

I love the way that Labour supporters (I assume you are one?) always fall back on personal invective when commenting on Conservative politicians and policies. Is it because you don't have the brains to meaningfully critique their policies? I am genuinely interested in your answer.

(Would it be okay to say I won't vote Labour because: "Ed Milliband is an android with a speech impediment and Ed Balls is a loathsome, putrid, hypocritical pimple on the arsehole of mankind", for example?)

I would've given you an upvote. But your post just reminded me of about 30 embarrassing moments from the last decade and now I won't sleep for a week.

Damn you. Damn you to hell.

That's annoying. I used the URL to search Reddit and it came up clean. Apologies to all.

Simon Amstell on religion... by goodnightmistertomin atheism

[–]UncleArthur 1 point2 points ago

Well, aren't you a classy individual? How can I possibly compete with such a well-structured argument as yours? Oh, hang on, how about by actually quoting some facts? Let me see...

"English historian Simon Sebag Montefiore studied Stalin’s hobbies and personal library, what Stalin liked to read, what kind of marks he left in his books. He found that Stalin liked to quote long quotes from the Bible. Stalin left such mark about God in the book by Anatole France "Last pages. Dialogues under a rose. About God": "Don‘t know traces, don‘t see. There is no Him for them." ("Следов не знают, не видят. Его для них нет."). It seems that Stalin thought he knew God’s traces and saw God, not like others. Stalin "denied categorically to prescribe atheistic literature to his personal library, fastidiously calling it ""antireligious waste-paper (junk)"". ("Secret life of Stalin : By materials of his books and archive : According to Stalinism" by Ilizarov.B.S. 2004)" Source: http://freethoughtpedia.com/wiki/Was_Stalin_an_atheist%3F

"Josef Stalin's "very religious" mother named him after St. Joseph, and wanted him to become a priest. Stalin himself supposedly claimed that his father had been a priest, and he was purportedly "damaged by violence" while being "raised in a poor priest-ridden household." As a youth, Stalin spent five years in a Greek Orthodox seminary, after which he purportedly renounced his religion. In his later years, Stalin apparently embraced Christianity once more. As Stalin biographer Edvard Radinsky remarks, "During his mysterious retreat [of June 1941] the ex-seminarist had decided to involve the aid of the God he had rejected." Radinsky likewise chronicles a number of religious comrades in Stalin's immediate circle. It is evident that, whether for good or bad, religion played a significant role in Stalin's life." "Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge were composed of Buddhists and Pol Pot was a Theravada Buddhist. He studied at a Buddhist monastery and then at a Catholic school for 8 years. Cambodia's communism was influenced by Theravada Buddhism. Prince Norodom Sihanouk said, "Pol Pot does not believe in God but he thinks that heaven, destiny, wants him to guide Cambodia in the way he thinks it the best for Cambodia, that is to say, the worst. Pol Pot is mad, you know, like Hitler." So, while Pol Pot was definitely not a Christian, he was also definitely not an Atheist." While it may be true that Stalin et al were atheist (and this is not a complete proven fact as demonstrated above,) they did not wage war in the name of atheism, nor were they raised as atheists.

But I don't know why I'm bothering. You are obviously so certain, so fixed in your mindset, that you're either beyond seeing an alternative view or you just don't want to. Or have I just fed the troll?

Mao, Pol Pot, et al didn't commit crimes against humanity because they were atheists. They committed crimes against humanity because they were dicks.

Religious nutters commit crimes against humanity in the name of their religion.

Here's to you, Mr/Mrs/Miss/Ms Middle Lane Driver.

The motorway is like Goldilocks' story to you, isn't it?

Lane 1 is too slow. It's the lorry lane. Not for you.

Lane 3 is too fast. It's for Audis and BMWs only.

Lane 2 is just right. It's the cruising lane. And you can sit in it and switch off your brain and just pootle along, no matter what speed you are doing (somewhere between 55 and 60, normally).

So here's to you, you complete and utter arsehole. May you crash and die in a fire.

Do what I did. Welcome him by name and then ask him, in a loud and intimidating voice: "And what are your intentions towards my daughter?!" My daughter has never forgiven me!
