I took it as more of a metaphor for the repetitive nature of our lives whereby we repeat the same task over and over again (i.e. our jobs) in order to acquire things which in reality we do not need or even really want. I think the episode is more of an abstract reflection of consumerism in society opposed to a thought out science fiction story.
