Really? I wasn't aware of that. Regardless, these notebooks advertised less than two hours of battery life, and a common netbook gets at least five hours even with Linux installed.

American Heart Association: Tasers can cause death by allliein science

Why is this news? Of course they can. A taser is a nonlethal weapon, to be used in place of a real gun. It most likely won't injure the person severely, but you don't just go shocking people for no reason.

I was just reading about that!

Note that this is only a temporary requirement: The ultimate plan is to create a new version of Native Client executables that can run on any processor. This new Native Client technology is called Portable Native Client (PNaCl, pronounced "pinnacle"), and it is already under development. Instead of generating x86 or ARM code, PNaCl transforms native code into bitcode using a compiler based on the open source LLVM (low-level virtual machine) project. When the browser downloads the bitcode, PNaCl then translates it to machine code and validates it in the same way Native Client validates machine code today.

I think that NaCL is very interesting, but it's somewhat limiting, and the vast majority of applications just don't belong inside a browser.

I'm serious about the cross-compiling thing, though. As long as you follow good practices and use only open source libraries, you can just change your makefile and have binaries for any OS. Compiling for different CPU architectures is a bit more complicated, but in practice most libraries have already been fixed for ARM and PowerPC, at least. The only real obstacle is anything closed source, but most commonly used libraries are available for at least Windows and OSX, the latter of which is not far off from Linux.

I see your point, though - binary portability is better than source portability any day. Maybe if NaCL gets a standalone runtime like Java or .NET, it really will be revolutionary.

I just felt that this one needed a bit more than one layer of context.

Meh, just write for Linux and cross-compile for Windows and OSX. Almost any dependency that works on Linux also works on every other operating system and CPU architecture. The only thing that NaCL brings is a universal binary that runs within a sandbox on any system with Chromium installed.
