The $1.45 Trillion Fighter Jet—& the Florida Deficit Hawks Who Love it - One of the Pentagon's most-criticized expenditures is warmly welcomed in tea partier Rick Scott's Sunshine State by anutensilin progressive

[–]TheLoneHoot 1 point2 points ago

I've been a Floridian for roughly half my 49 years. Contrary to what most people think, the state is very little like how it is depicted in movies, TV, or in clichés and stereotypes. There are a TON of things to like about living here and I don't think I'd want to live anywhere else.

That being said...

...there are more than a few things about my state that embarrass me and having Rick Voldemort Scott and Lt. Gov. Dipshit represent me are at the top of that list.

Progressive voter apathy in 2010 is why these assholes are in office and wreaking havoc on the Sunshine State. Let their reign serve as a warning to Progressives not to take voting lightly in 2012.

Sweet WRX!

I'm an old school Subaru guy (mostly just an old guy - 49th birthday in less than a week). I drive a '96 SVX and was driving an '89 XT6 up until last week when my daughter totaled it (got my eye on another one right now though).

Gotta love the Dragon!

he was indeed a machinist I believe - or a metalurgist (he knew a LOT about chemistry and that sort of thing) maybe. However he had also worked in "hydraulic exporatory drilling" (not sure what capacity) and talked about the cocktail of fluids pumped in to "swell the strata", etc.

His scope of reference was simply things like his interactions and experiences in remediating leaks (valves, lines, etc.), and whatever other things he did on the drilling side. He mentioned the overwhelming odor of gas(es?) wafting up from the ground in some sites, how they weren't allowed near some sites without certain types of respirators, and how they were constantly responding to air quality warnings from sensing equipment/vehicles/stations.

That's about all I remember. But he seemed like a pretty "up and up" guy who stood nothing to gain by embellishing (not even conversatinal karma! LOL).

Actually I heard it from a guy who I drive with once a year who works in the industry, who volunteered that it seemed accurate to what he has seen. I didn't claim it proved anything. I simply said I knew a guy who was in the natural gas industry who said it seemed to match things he's seen/experienced. I also said that I had never seen it myself.

I'm guessing that's a Z-car thing.

Nope, I drive a goofy little Subaru sports car from the 80s/90s and we often get together to drive on The Tail of The Dragon, which is US129 in extreme western NC. The Z thing you're referring to might very well be held in the same place... it's VERY popular with a lot of car groups and especially with motorcyclists.

I belong to a car group that meets annually to drive a particular piece of twisty mountain road. A couple of year ago, when that movie came out, one guy had driven out to the meet (in Western NC) from central Texas. He said he'd just seen the movie (I had only heard of it and didn't know much about it at all), and said this (close to a quote from memory):

"We went and saw that movie 'Gasland' the other night. Pretty much all
that shit is true. I hate to say it 'cause I work in the business¹ but
                  it's true."

He then went on to cite a lot of examples of dangerous and negligent safety issues he had seen that were near disasters, etc.

I actually have yet to see it - I keep meaning to but never seem to remember to check it out.

¹ He worked in "the business" on the metal work side of things.

So the "payload weight" is separate from the aircraft weight. How is it attached? is it a modular unit you design and fit, and then have weighed by the judges prior to takeoff?

What was the maximum lifted at the meet? What was your team's payload weight?

Kudos to you and your team for participating in this. I wish I had been a more astute individual in my youth (I'm 49 now). I watch a lot of NASA TV and see engineering competitions for high school and college students, and I regret my direction in life - but I have a lot of hope for our future thanks to "kids" like you. :)

Well done!

Not sure but if you look at it, I'm pretty sure the white queen is about to take a black bishop. Probably over in another 6 moves.

OP is THE biggest reposter on Reddit - a serial polluter - who does nothing BUT repost all day long. Period.

Nobody cares about the occasional repost, but this person apparently considers it a career.

You missed the part where he said, "I hate it when...", generally indicating something out of the ordinary.

OP is THE biggest reposter on Reddit. It is his(?) "career" - nothing but reposts all day. Check out how many people complain about him(?) and his shit. I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with the occasional repost, but this d-bag is a serial polluter of Reddit. Moreover, as silly as karma is, the folks originally posting are often hoping their submission hits the front page or at least the front page for the subreddit involved. Often times the OP won't even bother to change the title and reposts within hours of the original... somehow (puppet accounts?) getting voted way up. This is unfair to the original submitter who had hoped to "make it" to the front page.

Again karma is ridiculous IMHO, and I have never had any of my submissions reposted by the OP... I (like a TON of people on Reddit) find him(?) a huge nuisance. I learned of his shit from other Redditors and now have tagged and downvote him whenever I see his posts.

Again, I have no issues at all with normal reposts - this person however ONLY reposts others' submissions.

I shit you not - my younger brother has 5. Fortunately for him, they're small, "inverted", and almost indistinguishable in color from his skin tone. The doctor pointed them out to my mom when he was very young. Basically in his case they just look like small "divots" in his skin over his ribs. They're not arranged in any "logical" order either. Just kind of random, two on the left (IIRC) and one more central-ish.

I can't see by the photo, but I'm curious what you mean by "old man". At a week shy of 49, I'm prehistoric compared to most Redditors.

(Doesn't help that I've long been prematurely gray too)

Model A

Surprisingly Ford's designation "A" came well after the "T". The Model T was many years earlier.

Yes, Reddit certainly has no population of college graduates or people with deep fascination with particular subjects or folks who've worked in particular fields.

For the unfamiliar (like me) what is the "heavy lift" aspect? Do you have a specific power limit and try to lift as much as possible? Are there certain payloads that everyone must attach and lift?
