Plastic sprue stretched over a lit candle will allow you to get the diameter you need, cut to required height.

Race recap from last week's epic swim by tsr82in Swimming

[–]TheGreatCthulhu 4 points5 points ago

This is a great writeup from tsr82, I was lucky enough to receive a first hand report.

As I said to him a few days ago:

  • He is right and entitled to be proud. The estimated number of active marathon swimmers globally is about 2,000. He's now a marathon swimmer.
  • He displayed the most fundamental prerequisite of a marathon swimmer, toughness. Despite problems during the swim, he kept going and he honestly analysed the swim for improvements for next time.

He didn't stop when he was sick or tired. He stopped when he was done.

Don't tell anyone I said this, but Crocs are great. Knockoffs are just as good, €4 on ebay.

Weekly question thread: Ask /r/photography anything you want to know about photography or cameras! Don't be shy! Newbies welcome! - May 21st Edition by frosticklein photography

Thanks, going through the old stuff, there's far too much that's blurred, taken with a lens cap on etc. and I really would like to clear it out.

EDit: well after a week of playing around, I finally realised Shotwell does allow the user to delete from the hard drive. First Move Image to Trash in Shotwell. Then go to Shotwell's trash folder. Deleting there will remove from hard drive.

This is an organisation type question:

I have about 10k image from 10 years. I'm gradually sorting them into year folders, it's taking time.

I've also just started using Shotwell for management.(I'm on Ubuntu). Shotwell is quick and great but deleting or renaming files in it is not reflected in the original filenames.

It's easy to see in Shotwell that there are files I want to delete, but then going tracking them down to folder after viewing in Shotwell is very time consuming.

  1. Is there an easy way to do this? Find the file in Shotwell, quickly find an delete in Ubuntu?
  2. Why aren't or is there a way that files saved on the SD on my Canon 1100d could at least be saved as date-names rather than useless incremental DCS filenames?

There are a variety of one-armed front crawl drills, but all are variations of this drill with increasing/decreasing time kicking and stroke. Granted they all assume the use of two arms but I would start with that, kicking 6 time, then stroking, until you feel more in control of the rotation. (I once had to swim in open water two miles with one functional arm after an injury, and I just used this variation).

Alternatively, and much more useful would be Combat Side Stroke. In fact someone just posted a video on it on Swimmit 2 days ago. I'm not a good side-stroker, but there are certainly people on Swimmit who could help more.

Check out the Open Water Wednesday series on Swimmits sidebars, I've been covering a wide range of relevant issues for beginner and improving open water swimmers; basics, gear, waves, rough water etc.

I'm ultradistance, therefore mostly frontcrawl, but I swim backstroke almost every day at least to protect the shoulder stabilising muscles, and butterfly just for the hell of it regularly, breaststroke the least regularly 'cause I just hate it, but as SpartanKid says, most good swimmers are competent at all four strokes, (though less so in the marathon swimming world).

I always stress the important of backstroke to mostly front crawl swimmers, you should be doing 5% to 10% of total distance as backstroke. (Technically freestyle isn't a stroke, it's a choice of strokes, but is used as a synonym for front crawl)

As a cold water swimmer, I burn horrendous amounts of energy. Much of it is in rewarming after training, as temperatures from 50f down to 40f take about 3 hours to rewarm from, and the consequent appetite is ridiculous.

Once water temps are above 50f the post swim appetite is attenuated (I've heard this from other cold water swimmers also) but still significant. Most munipal pools tend to be too warm compared to championship pools also, my local pool has recently gone up to 30.5C (86f) and is murder for a long distance cold water swimmer training 2.5 hours a day.

My optimal temperature is 15 to 17C, (59 to 63), considered too cold for triathletes who HAVE to wear a wetsuit under 65F.
