Crash Alert - As you might have noticed, the stock market is falling like a stone. by JackIsidorein collapse

[–]TankMan3217 0 points1 point ago

Thank you. I won't. Be careful, though, because it's not just the people. It's natural to want to make some sense of the world, but obsessing over things like this is a rabbit hole, and you'll want to make sure you can still climb out of it. I think it's better to keep working for change, rather than dwelling on things that you can't change. I think we would agree on so many things, and I wish you the best.

What about sun-worship, rain-dancing, God and gods, witch doctors and witch hunters, spiritual healing, a flat earth, rampant disease (about which we had zero understanding whatsoever), slavery and eugenics? So many falsehoods, so much horror and death. It's always been a hard and chaotic scrabble, but we find a way to carry on and that's what makes us so beautiful. Nobody has ever really been in control of the planet, expressly because it's always been far too chaotic and unpredictable. One thing is certain: we humans are a resilient bunch. Perhaps there is a fundamental and unsolvable disagreement here, but you must at least admit that an argument can be made about a "natural order".

I can agree to some extent that the digital age brings some dire consequences. We're certainly changing very fast, but modern science gives more people a better understanding of our physical world than we ever had before. I apologize for being so irate, but don't condescend me with this "You need to look deeper" crap. Been there, done that. I used to believe in conspiracies, NWO and the like, and I'm over the whole "everybody needs to wake up" thing. None of it makes any sense, and nobody agrees on anything, because as long as it supports a conspiracy, these people will take the most insane rantings at face value, even if they're self contradicting and patently absurd. Anybody who tries to apply critical thinking gets shunned as "the man", or told they need to "see through the lies", much like you just did to me. Maybe you need to look deeper, and start applying some critical reasoning to the things you take for granted on awful information or brazen speculation. You don't seem like a bad guy, but don't talk down to me on this shit.

So you mean to tell me that the media is filled with disinformation, distraction, and lies, and governments engage in widespread propaganda? So, essentially, the status-quo that has existed since the dawn of history still persists today? What a surprise!!

Maybe you need to re-read my comment. Find the part where I denied any of this, and point it out to me. You'll find that I'm only asking that people approach these things rationally, and stop trying to find the apocalypse in every single event.

I'm all for being extremely skeptical of the media and the government and the corporatocracy, but it drives me fucking insane when people don't apply that same skepticism to random idiots on the internet.

This is exactly what I mean. What vague conspiracy are you talking about now? Who is it and what is it? What smoke? What, specifically, am I denying?

Crash Alert - As you might have noticed, the stock market is falling like a stone. by JackIsidorein collapse

[–]TankMan3217 29 points30 points ago

sigh. I subscribed to this sub-reddit a long time ago, thinking it would have some useful insight into the impact of widespread institutional collapse. After-all, there is some truth to it: modern civilization is certainly unsustainable, and I think that we do live on the precipice of significant change (for better or for worse). Most major civilizations throughout history have, at some point, proven themselves unsustainable. I think it's interesting to hear what people have to say about how the chips will fall for modern people. That being said...

I've seen so much Alex Jones level horseshit on here that I'm drowning in the paranoid ravings of apocalypse fetishists. You're trying so hard to see impending doom on the horizon that you see it in everything, and you want it to happen. Are we really that bored? Sites like this one and Alter-net, in case you didn't notice, are constantly pumping out sensationalist, armchair-economist "analysis" nonsense. People seem to eat it up without a second thought, even though none of it really ever comes to fruition. These are not reliable sources.

It's like porn. No matter what happens, it always ends with people having sex, no matter how unrealistic it is. Every world-news level event can be twisted and distorted until it's time to ring the alarm and hole up in a bomb shelter. Neither of them are anything more than fantasy. Chicken-Little is an old story. There's been people running around screaming that the sky is falling since the beginning of history. In the era of the Internet, /r/collapse has replaced the alcoholic you always run into at your local spot that you never talk to. Every time you do, he's just drunkenly spouting doom and gloom. That guy has been around for CENTURIES, and he's never been right because he's always pant-shitting drunk and depressed. The world looks amazingly terrible to his eyes and nobody can be expected to think rationally in such a state.

People love to be in on a secret, whether it's the promises of religion, UFO conspiracies, or preparing for the imminent end of mankind as we know it. It goes hand-in-hand with that feeling - like you're a part of something bigger than yourself - that drives people to churches, voting booths and protests. There's nothing inherently wrong with this, but it's best to take everything with a grain of salt.

Here's my advice: If you find yourself believing things like Alter-net and Alex Jones, check their sources. Or skip it, go outside and get some fresh air, because they never cite anything. It's loosely based in reality, like a good sci-fi novel. Instead, talk to your neighbors, make some friends, have sex with people and enjoy your life as much as your situation allows it. If you have a computer and internet in your home, chances are you have other opportunities waiting for you, all of which are far more engaging and fulfilling than sitting on your ass, waiting for the end of the world.

Mark Zuckerberg's Instant Message conversations around the time he started Facebook - says his behavior is unethical, but legal. by futurefix5in technology

[–]TankMan3217 0 points1 point ago

This is an illustration of a supposed conversation, with no references whatsoever. That certainly merits some skepticism.

If he's admitted it, that's one thing. If he only "hasn't denied it" that's meaningless. Maybe he just doesn't talk about it. Glenn Beck hasn't denied that he raped and murdered a little girl in 1990. At face value, the article is just some words on the internet (edit) *that may or may not be true.

Mark Zuckerberg's Instant Message conversations around the time he started Facebook - says his behavior is unethical, but legal. by futurefix5in technology

[–]TankMan3217 26 points27 points ago

I have my doubts that this is true, but the real story here is that some people in this thread still think Zuckerberg etc., at some point, gave a rat's ass about privacy.

Facebook users were never the customers. Customers would be the ones spending money on a product. Advertisers and marketing departments are giving them money for your information, therefore they are the customers, and your information is the product. Facebook worries about your privacy inasmuch as a farmer worries that his pigs might get eaten. None of this should surprise anyone.

[–]TankMan3217 1 point2 points ago

Perhaps I should be more clear. We do not fully bill the funds, however there will be a pending charge on the account. The money is effectively "taken" because it cannot be used, but in reality it is only reserved. It is standard practice where you've been shopping, you just didn't know it.

5 Reasons Why American Riots Will Be The Worst In The World by allliein collapse

[–]TankMan3217 8 points9 points ago

This person sounds like a qualified expert, who clearly has used nothing but empirical evidence to extrapolate all of these prophetic conclusions about the future of America. I better not take this with any grains of salt, and instead incessantly quote this video to preach gloom and doom at every social gathering I attend in the near future.

[–]TankMan3217 23 points24 points ago

They let you know it was on backorder the same day, and you're this pissed? Have you considered that they might be getting bunk info from a distributor, and might just be telling you that they don't really know when it will come in? Not only is your letter rude, but your anger is clearly misplaced, with no consideration for the people who seem to only be trying to do their jobs. Grow up.

*EDIT -Also, you're buying sex toys. Either your livelihood depends on you having sex toys, or you're over-reacting. Choose one.

As somebody who works in online retail, you can fuck yourself right in the face.

Your over-written screed is so incredibly ignorant of how orders are processed and fulfilled, I can guarantee you that staff read it aloud and laughed at you.

Maybe some errors were made, and you didn't get great service. I'm sorry to hear that.

Since you are apparently not aware, being on backorder means they are holding your money and promising to ship your item when it comes in. You can politely cancel your order at any time, and get your money back. You can't be on backorder unless they have your money, otherwise they will not hold your place in the waiting list. Why would they? I am astonished that someone who hasn't figured out how this works is allowed to buy sex toys.

Also, you're buying sex toys. You cannot tell me it is worth making baseless claims about the personal health of the staff and ad hominem attacks on their character. No matter how laughably petty and childish your insults are, it's still very rude. Your parents clearly never taught you how to negotiate politely. Again, I apologize if you really are 12 years old and this is your first time doing business with someone on your own, but if you're old enough to buy sex toys, you should be old enough to not be a snotty little bitch everytime you don't get your way.

Advice on purchasing this Rega Planar 3 Turntable by useful_idiotin vinyl

[–]TankMan3217 0 points1 point ago

See if he'll sell it for cheaper without the cartridge. I work for a large and reputable dealer and I know for a fact we have genuine ADC stylii (new old stock), maybe even a cartridge or two (also NOS, if we still have 'em). If you PM me I can check if we have an XLM cartridge around. It would be the cheaper route ($80-$120) vs. getting an Ortofon OM 10 and upgrading to the stylus (at least $200)

li303ve is right about that arm (it rocks), and for the money I rather like the Blue Point line. It's a shame that they're such a poor match for each other. As far as MM vs. MC - if you go with a moving coil, take care to get a solid preamp or step-up transformer. Low output MC's are often the best sounding cartridges around, but their weak signals (usually 0.5-1mV) are very delicate and prone to contamination. They require a good MC phono stage or step-up transformer to boost your signal without introducing nasty noise.

Can you explain the allegations that you are stealing other peoples artistic works?

Seriously? What is this, Watergate? You sound like you're on C-SPAN. Who cares? What harm was done? Can you explain my allegation that you are taking this way too seriously, and might benefit from some fresh air?
