Hey guys, I bought a present for my brother and he doesn't want it so I'll give it to one of you. by tripinbalzin truegaming

[–]Talonis 1 point2 points ago

I've been very busy lately, and yet D3 is a game that managed to suck me into playing it for over 6 hours a day in one sitting. Although I have technically finised the game (within several days), I'm glad I spent the time on a polished, shorter game rather than a superfically lengthy one.

Without a longer story however, this game is really just a grindfest now rather than a fresh new experience. So now, I would love to gift this to a skeptical friend of mine. Draw him in, introduce him to the Diablo series.

D3 is one of those classic gems that I'm sure will be around for a while. As fun as this game is, however, I think it would truely shine if you played with your friends. This is a great opportunity (:

What is that little tune they play at the end of each episode? by Talonisin psych

Darn. Oh well. Was really hoping it would have a full track or something.

Ever played a game that was universally panned, yet personally very enjoyable? by DrRoxophdin truegaming

[–]Talonis 0 points1 point ago

I loved Alpha Protocol so much. I know there are an incredible number of flaws in the game, but quite honestly, I hardly noticed them. The great dialogue system really covers up those flaws nicely. I was really sad to hear that they wouldn't be making a sequel b/c the first one did so poorly.

What is often overlooked/undervalued regarding games? What gets too much attention? by Influx07in truegaming

[–]Talonis 0 points1 point ago

I agree. I've always hated game trailers that don't show the interface. No matter how good the game is, if the interface is pure garbage, it detracts soooo much enjoyment from it.

One little thing that's annoying is more than enough to keep me away from a game. When I played Dota 2 a while ago, I couldn't level up a skill without clicking the damn skill up button first whereas in HoN, they had little buttons that popped up above each skill whenever you got a skill point so you could quickly and easily level up skills. This tiny little thing is more than enough to make sure I never go back while its still like that.

Why are gamers so picky? by shodan007in truegaming

[–]Talonis 1 point2 points ago

People have tastes and preferences. It's human nature. Do you like every type of food you come across? If you've had burgers from Wendy's, McDonalds, and Burger King and hated them all, would you possibly order a burger at In-n-Out even though everyone tells you those are better than the other three by far?

Randomness and Imagined Agency / where is the threshold for "too random"? by DinofarmGamesin truegaming

[–]Talonis 0 points1 point ago*

How do they decide who plays first in chess/go? You flip a coin (in casual play at least. I don't know about tournaments) and apparently getting white in chess is a pretty big advantage. There's an article on Wikipedia detailing this.

And I think someone else mentioned that in starcraft, your starting positions are determined at random, and these positions sometimes offer such an advantage that certain locations are prevented from being chosen.

As for street fighter, I have no experience, but my question is, how are certain simultaneous events handled? I'm looking at Super Smash Brothers where its done based on port priority, (aka which controller you have determines who wins in certain simultaneous events). And how do they determine who gets which controller in a tournament match, should the players bring it up? Randomly of course.

The point is, these games have randomness, as tiny as it may be, and it will affect how you play to some degree.

If you could combine two games, what would they be? why? by lopo4in truegaming

When someone says "soon" in reference to a video game, I expect it within 3 months. I highly doubt that's happening. That's why i asked for a source.

What are some of the worst communities in gaming? What are some of the best ones? by Catman789in truegaming

[–]Talonis 14 points15 points ago

I've heard Heroes of Newerth has one of the worst communities, and I'm inclined to agree. If you play badly, you will get absolutely ridiculed. There is sooooo much hate going around. I think there was some saying about how HoN's learning curve was like a vertical wall where people above you are throwing rocks at you while shouting insults about your mother. I hate to say it, but I've been changed a lot by the HoN community. I used to be nice to everyone, regardless of how they treated me. If they were doing worse than me, I would help them. If they called me a noob, I would apologize and ask how I could be better. Now, I'm still helpful and polite to most, but if you shittalk me, I'll do everything in my power to make the game miserable for you. Fortunately, this behavior is restricted to HoN.

Maplestory also has a fairly vitriolic community in my opinion. For some reason, people think calling you a noob and talking crap about your mom makes you more willing to lower the price on the items you're selling. And people won't hesitate to steal your grinding spots either. Scammers plague that game as well, and its just generally not a great experience.

On the other hand, I really like the MtG communities. I've been a part of several Magic specific forums, and people are usually very helpful and polite there. The people I've played with in real life are usually pretty nice too.

If you could combine two games, what would they be? why? by lopo4in truegaming

[–]Talonis 5 points6 points ago

Halo and Conquest: Frontier Wars. After reading Halo: Fall of Reach, I always wanted a Halo game where you could play the epic space battles with their ships. Also, I always found the spaceships in many space games to look very silly and unrealistic (like SPAZ). Conquest's ships (at least for the Terrans) looked so much better.

What's your opinion on handheld gaming in general? by Angbandin truegaming

[–]Talonis 3 points4 points ago*

Handhelds are awesome for one reason: mobility. I play all over the place. Lying in bed, on the bus, at my friend's house, on my own couch, at the park, wherever the hell I want. With a console, I can't do that. I get so antsy sitting in the same place.

Sure, handhelds have a tiny screen in comparison, and sure, they're weaker than consoles, but the tradeoff is 250% worth it. It's why I have a "gaming" laptop and not a desktop. For me at least, mobility of handhelds outweigh ANY positives that consoles have. I will likely never buy a console, but I'll probably own most handhelds.

I recently purchased a PSP (no not the Vita), and i couldn't be happier. Finally get to play some of the classics I never got to, like FF 5 through 9. If I couldn't play them on the go, I probably would never play them despite easy access to a Playstation.

If you had only one game to play for the rest of your life, which would you choose? by Cuz91in truegaming

[–]Talonis 1 point2 points ago

Either WoW or Heroes of Newerth (and please try to keep the HoN vs Dota 2 vs LoL debate out of it).

I've never played WoW, but I've heard very good things about it, and frankly, I've been wanting to play an MMO. Plenty of updates, so probably more than enough content to last for a very long time. I'd have to do some research and probably get a trial version before I would commit to WoW, but its very likely that this would be my choice.

HoN I've played almost every day since September 2009, and I play at least 3 games a day when I do, sometimes close to 7 or 8. And I've never gotten bored of the game. With frequent updates, and so many heroes I've never played seriously, this is a strong contender.

Losing internet soon. Will I still be able to play my Steam games offline? by Codyliusin Steam

[–]Talonis 0 points1 point ago

Since we're on the topic of extended offline mode, is it possible to use offline mode to share my account? Log into steam on my computer, download all games necessary, go offline, log into steam on my friend's computer, download all the games necessary, go offline, rinse and repeat for everyone else that wants to borrow my account.

Which laptop should I buy? by quigonjinn96in truegaming

[–]Talonis 0 points1 point ago*

I got myself an Lenovo IdeaPad Y570 for around 800 bucks. No, its not exactly a gaming laptop, but it handles Skyrim at near maximum with no problems, so I'm very pleased with it.

And people, what's wrong with a gaming laptop? As far as I'm concerned, the mobility far outweighs the drop in power and whatever other drawbacks there are. And even then I haven't come across a game I couldn't run at max or near max settings. Plus, I can bring it to class for notes and whatnot. Lan parties are a lot easier too when you don't have a bulky desktop to lug around.

Your Thoughts on Random Global Events in Games? by Griphynin truegaming

[–]Talonis 0 points1 point ago

I would absolutely love to read about how such events ultimately unfold. It would be fascinating to read about players from opposing factions working together to set up quarantines at outpost cities and killing any players that approached if they were infected. Or about how some players formed a squad to go around healing people trying to save them. Or even the assholes who purposely infected a safe city, and the ensuing pandemonium. Or see screenshots of cities filled with corpses.

Playing in these events? Even better.

What do you think of competitive co-op? by Talonisin truegaming

[–]Talonis[S] 7 points8 points ago

When I played borderlands with my friend, he charged ahead picking up everything, tossing me the scraps. The one time I actually got to a chest before him, he gave me a stern talking to about how I shouldn't be so greedy. And that is why I stopped playing borderlands.
