How about we just brew the coffee a bit more concentrated to account for the melting ice.

Does it taste better, or sweeter?

My parents are born in Vietnan. I myself never developed a taste for it, so I don't know if the broth is "good" or not. Anyways, they claim that a lot of the pho broth in the northern areas are laden with MSG, it makes sense since it seems like they are using less ingredients but somehow still taste sweet.

Don't pedestrian usually have the right of way at the crosswalks and intersections?

Some states require motorist to stop or yield for pedestrians even if they are crossing illegally. I can see this spark some resentment by the motorist when a pedestrians is aggressively using their right-of-way, but I think it makes things less complicated at the end of the day.

Your hate is terribly misplaced, Microsoft develops Directx so games can be created and played on their OS. It is a very good and well maintained collection of APIs that makes it easy, not to mention quick, for developers to make games.

Apple and the linux base are free to produce this same type of tools for each's respective platform, but fails to do so. Don't blame Microsoft for making it easy to develop games of their platform.

EDIT: So let me get the downvoters straight here; I want to make sure we're on the same page. You guys are just diametrically against console lock-down. Console games should, in a perfect world, run on everything, from the DirectX-powered Xbox360, to the (derivative of) OpenGL-powered PS3. But, when it comes to PCs, a DirectX monopoly is totally fine?

I'm not claiming DirectX natural monopoly on PC Games is fine. I'm just saying it is terribly shallow that you are angry at DirectX and do not understand why it has the presence it has in PC gaming.

Put yourself in the shoes of a programmer, you can either: A) use an existing API to make your games or B) start from scratch.

The situation here is Microsoft actively supports the game developers by creating and maintaining DirectX. No other companies or user base has done the same. Microsoft did not force the game developers to use DiXectx, the game developers chose it out of their own free will because it would be easier on them.

DirectX is not the problem here. The problem is no other comparable tools exists on other platforms, and that game developers just want the quickest and easiest path to make their games.

TIL that the term "devil's advocate" was originally used by the catholic church to describe a lawyer whose job it was to argue against the sainthood of a candidate. Christopher Hitchens was asked to be the devil's advocate against the beatification of Mother Teresa. by Duncanconstructionin todayilearned

[–]TA41 21 points22 points ago*

To be specific the devil's advocate is a "lawyer" of Canon Law, church laws. The position and role itself is long defunct, since Pope John Paul II abolished the office back in 1983.

Hitchen was asked to testify against the beatification of Mother Teresa, not be the devil's advocate.

Edit: hope you guys are happy.

I'm not sure what happened during the patches either, but the game is pretty much unplayable on my laptop after a few waves. On low.

On my desktop it's fine, even on high, but its spec is way above the recommend requirements.

Back when I was an intern at the USDA, 2 years back, they blocked all the usb port on the workstations and I couldn't even charge my cell phone much less try to use a usb drive. I'm not sure what kind of archaic corporate secrets the USDA might have, that a intern with limited security access can leak, but even my manager was blocked from using unapproved hardware.

A lot of stuff that Lucas puts into his works are questionable; unfortunately, when people who worked with him stopped questioning him we get The Phantom Menace, but I digress, let me try to explain it as best as I can:

Obi-Wan simply had to die at some point in the movie, and that was a plausible time for him to die.

The original Star Wars followed a tried and true story structure called the Monomyth or 'The Hero's Journey'. It is a very compelling story pattern found in myths and legends over thousands of years and across many different cultures, look up Joseph Campbell The Hero with a Thousand Faces if you want to know more. In one of the important stages of the Monomyth, the hero will be physically separated from his mentor (death is a popular method, but other plot devices may work). The hero who can longer rely on the strength and wisdom of the mentor, must quickly discover the strength within himself and carry on with the story or fail and die. This is an important part of the Hero's character development and marks the transition where the hero takes charge of his destiny, and ultimately the story.

Could have Obi-Wan's death been executed differently or convincingly? Maybe. Keep in mind that Lucas, at the time, actually expected Star Wars to fail, with no plans for sequel much less prequel, so I think Lucas probably just wanted to package it neatly and conveniently as he can, and that was the result.

TLDR: Obi-Wan died at point in time because it was a necessary part of the story structure. The way he died was probably because Lucas couldn't think of a better way to execute it.

How do you "turn on" a nuclear reactor? by dancole42in askscience

[–]TA41 9 points10 points ago*

This thread has one of the best disscussion about Chernobyl I've seen on the internet.

http://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?p=1166667#post1166667

The Chernobyl reactor, the RBMK; is a BAD design. It was a scale-up of a Soviet nuclear weapons production reactor. The RBMK was dual-use; it produced fuel for nuclear weapons as well as power.

Even so; the main cause of the Chernobyl accident, as with the Three Mile Island accident; was STUPID operators!! The operators had planned running an experiment on the Chernobyl reactor [ a poorly planned experiment, at that]. They lowered the power in preparation for the experiment.

However, the grid load controller in Kiev [ the people that run the electric system ] called the plant and requested that they remain online at the reduced power because Kiev needed the electricity. It was 12 hours later before the load controller let the plant go offline.

When you shutdown or reduce power on a nuclear reactor, there is a temporary build-up of a neutron poison; Xenon-135. This is called a "Xenon transient" - the effects of which will disappear in under 24 hours if the reactor is left shutdown.

However, when the load controller released the Chernobyl reactor to go offline - they were right in the middle of this Xenon transient. The Xenon makes it difficult for the reactor to operate. But the operators wanted to run the experiment.

So they bypassed all the safety systems!!! They pulled the control rods out farther than the safety systems would have allowed them to do otherwise. Because of the design of the RBMK control rods that have a "non-poison follower"; this is a particularily DUMB thing to do. It means that if you request an emergency shutdown or SCRAM of the reactor; the control rods will cause power to INCREASE before they DECREASE power. [ Such a design is NOT PERMITTED in the USA. ]

The reactor was in a VERY UNSTABLE condition due to the low power and Xenon transient. Then the operators ran their experiment!!! KABOOM. They had a fast release of energy which blew the reactor open. The RBMK is graphite moderated. Most of the volume of the reactor is graphite - the stuff that's in the "lead" of your #2 pencil. It's like charcoal, and when exposed to the air at high temperature; the graphite caught fire and started to burn. It was the heat and convection of the fire that spread the radioactivity.

The main problem at Chernobyl was that the operators weren't THINKING!! They were so intent about running their experiment, they didn't stop and think about what was really happening in the reactor. The safety systems tried to stop them; and they overrode the safety systems because the safety systems weren't going to let them do their experiment!!!
