"I play a ton of video games; therefore, I know how to operate a real gun." What's a stupid/unfounded argument you're tired of hearing, Reddit? by thec0rinthianin AskReddit

[–]Syncblock -1 points0 points ago

The article isn't saying that religious people are stupid or became religious through an environment that made them stupid. It's saying that we've found some correlations but it's useless just discussing this issue from a IQ v religiosity perspective when there are other factors at play.

Correlation in no way equals causation and as the article suggests, religion doesn't make you stupid since some of our brightest minds were highly religious.

There's no unspoken rule that the oldest male pays unless say it's a work or family function. Why not just talk to your wife about it?

Yeah anyone from HK or who follows the tabloids there knows that Jackie's personal life is way beyond perfect but he's still probably one of the most loved celebrities in Asia.

BHP boss threatens to invest offshore. I say, where? Guinea perhaps. That politically stable country with good infrastructure. by bob-oin australia

It's just empty posturing from BHP. Nobody makes million dollar international investments just purely looking at taxation.

Life getting worse for nation's poor: Salvos by garykemblein australia

[–]Syncblock 1 point2 points ago

Again in all seriousness if you do have any proof, you really do need to bring it forward. I dont care what religious organisations do with their money but for the regulated charitable arm to use their funds to spread a religious message is illegal if not criminal.

[–]Syncblock 6 points7 points ago

In all seriousness if that is true then you definitely need to contact the ATO and other regulatory bodies. I've worked for a number of non for profits and there are strict stipulations on where the monies given is used. This money then gets audited by mostly big 4 firms (The Salvation Army get audited by PWC).

I do agree with you but the fact of the matter is the government simply isn't in a position to provide all the services that other charitable organisations do. Governmental programs are vulnerable to politics and funding not to mention the various administrative and human resources issues that arise from any large organisation.

At the moment we have a number of organisations who do have a religious history/background that can provide those services who are well equipped and filled with religious and non religious volunteers. I can't speak for every person who works in a charity but charities are not allowed to preach or convert people as a condition to providing charitable support.

I think the fact that our comments are getting downvoted and that the top upvoted comment is an anti Salvos one shows that people here are more interesting in bashing the Salvos than on discussing the main topic (that the poor in Australia are not in a good position).

There is a clear split between the charitable arm of the Salvation Army and the religious section. I don't agree with their stance on homosexuality but that in no way affects or diminishes their social work.

Even any psyc or science major can tell you that IQ tests are not a good indication of intelligence. Environmental factors play a much larger role in determining your intelligence than just genetics.

[–]Syncblock 11 points12 points ago

Did you read the article at all? There's no mention of the Salvation Army blaming homosexuality for what is a serious social issue (being that the rising utility costs are taking a toll on the poor).

I completely agree with this sentiment, the amount of anti religious circle jerking in this subreddit is ridiculous. By all means, we need to call out religious organisations when they fuck up but when we're talking about the family and social support that the Salvos or say St Vinnies provides, it's a completely different story.

A lot of these organisations are religious based but they provide essential support and services not covered by government groups.

NBC's 2012-13 Fall Schedule by wackyHairin television

Cheers? Frasier? Friends? Seinfield? Since the early 80s, NBC's had some pretty big hits and some of the best rated shows on tv. The network seems desperate in finding the next big ratings hit.

Gird your loins, Vallejo prices set to increase by Magnetboxin Warhammer

Which GW paints were you using? I find I generally thin most of my paints anyway (be it Vallejo, P3 or GW) but the GW foundation paints (not to mention Devlan mud and the other washes) are pretty good.

Two player Battlebox (Khador/Menoth) for $70 on Amazon. by Maxamillionairein Warmachine

[–]Syncblock 1 point2 points ago

The Battle box is great if at least you or your friend like playing Menoth and/or Khador. You can easily sell the remainder of the models and it works out cheaper than the battle groups.

They are not the most competitive armies at that point range but they do contain everything you need to play and are a great entry point into the game.

To magnetize or not to magnetize? by Utgarthain Warmachine

[–]Syncblock 0 points1 point ago

It's definitely worth magnetising your jacks as it allows you to have some variety of play and let's you pose your models as you like. The whole process is quite cheap and easy and if you're on a budget, can even be done with a file, a drill bit, a cutter and some putty.

Catholic Church claims women should marry earlier and not be too picky to avoid the Australian man drought by ImNotJesusin australia

[–]Syncblock -1 points0 points ago

I think the idea they focused on women was that a significantly greater portion of men with those criteria in that age group were married while the women were not. I think its interesting as considering that a majority of people still wanted to get married, you could perhaps infer that the majority of women in this age group prefer defacto relationships or marry younger/older men.

I normally go on long weekends or public holidays so my experiences could be a bit bias but it's still a great place to hang out. You can go swimming, have a barbecue or just have a few beers with your mates.

Catholic Church claims women should marry earlier and not be too picky to avoid the Australian man drought by ImNotJesusin australia

[–]Syncblock 0 points1 point ago

I'm constantly amazed at how people here are so ready to shit on the Catholic church (or any religious organisation). I'm not a Catholic but seriously guys, at least read the article before making your complaints.

Using statistics, the Catholic church and some other people (including a federal MP and a Demographer, are saying that due to the changes in family and relationship structure, the marriage rate has dropped by 50% despite people still wanting to get married.

As a result, one Catholic priest is suggesting that if young women want to get married they should take a risk and do so sooner than later as there are less 'eligible' men of the same age group which makes complete sense. The older you get, the more likely people in your age group will have already found partners.

Lets raise the level of conversation such as discussing say how encouraging younger women to get married sooner would affect the current divorce rate instead of circle jerking about how out of touch the Catholics are.
