TROPHY CASE

In regards to cat calling... by randiraeofsunshinein TwoXChromosomes

[–]SolarBears 0 points1 point ago

I guess the co-worker example was perhaps not the best one. I was just meaning to show that you can compliment strangers and not have a deeper meaning attached to it.

I complimented a guy in Starbucks the other day because he had tattoos that I found to be good quality. It was a compliment, not meaning I wanted his number or to go back to his place. Just a compliment. Granted, I don't consider that a cat call, but it is just to show that compliments don't always have to have a deeper meaning.

You make a lot of good points, and I can see that men hollering across the street to you is a sign of immaturity. I guess it just doesn't bother me enough to where (as some ladies have posted and ranted about) I would feel the need to lash out at them with such vigor.

As I said before, I feel worse things could be said to a person and it isn't worth my energy to worry about such insignificant events.

We obviously have differing ideas of what cat calls are. For example, last week I was jogging near my house and a guy honked his horn and said "looking good!" that is what I consider a cat call. Perhaps that should have been made clear, but I assumed all were on the same page. Especially since the issue is regarding opinions on what is a compliment and what isn't.

I don't think anyone would use your example as a "compliment".

For me, it isn't always about a "deeper" meaning. The guy said he like your tits. It is a compliment. You complimenting your co workers adorable skirt doesn't have to have a deeper meaning either. That's the great thing about compliments. I'd be more offended if someone said something like "hey you with the back problem! Yeah you! The one hunched over like Quasimodo from that ginormous load on your chest." (I'm really bad at insults obviously lol).

Don't pretend like you have never objectified a man by staring at his outstanding qualities. Granted, you probably don't cat call to them, but do you feel ashamed for thinking or saying it to your girlfriends? Because when it comes down to it you aren't seeing him for his personality, only his sexy biceps or toned thighs.

I'm willing to bet you only voice your opinion about that sexy man with your girlfriends too. We just feel more comfortable around the people we have close bonds with, same goes for men.

Maybe I'm just different, who knows.

Exactly, the responses so far has said it depends on where you live. I've lived in every type of setting possible, and it still doesn't bother me enough to ruin my day.

I'm a moderately attractive lady, and when I get cat calls or guys check me out I consider it a compliment. Getting offended just seems petty to me.

I've never understood the posts about women getting upset about men oggling them. I think there was a post here recently where a girl got caught in the rain and a passerby said "nice shirt" or something along those lines and it sounded like she lost her shit over it. Just a waste of energy IMO, especially when there are far worse things that could be said to you.

I'll probably be down voted for not agreeing with the masses, as posts like the wet t-shirt get a ton of support. I just wanted to let you know you are not the only one that thinks the same.

Her favorite spot on the couch...so rotten. by tiro_sprizzlein Pets

That's because you are babying her. My GSD used to scream and cry like a banshee when it came time for ear cleaning. All I would do is stick the cotton swab in his ear and he would cry, I wouldn't even have to move it around or anything. I held my ground. After a few minutes he would stop and I would give him many lovings and treats. Now he associates the ear cleaner with treats and pets.

Giving into your dog's wishes is only going to spoil them.

Is he full Shepherd? He looks exactly like my friend's GSD/husky, and I've never seen a shep without a predominantly black muzzle before.

Do you have dog insurance? If so who are you with, which plan do you have...and how much is it costing you? by wardserin dogs

So you are able to use your pet insurance every time you go to the vet? Even for a rabies shot? I was under the impression it was for surgeries and the like.

No, you're not the only one. I'd consider that cheating as well. Responding to ads on CL is especially bothersome. Installing a tracking system on his computer? I'd have peaced out a long time ago.

Sorry to say I don't consider those types of situations rescues anymore. Like I said it is probably semantics on my end, but I hear way too many stories about people "rescuing" animals and it turns out most of them are exaggerated.

Like people who "rescue" puppies from bad breeders. Nope, you didn't rescue that puppy, you just gave that breeder an excuse to breed another unhealthy litter.

Anyone mind pointing me in the direction of some breeds? by Rocker323in dogs

[–]SolarBears 0 points1 point ago

There are plenty of puppies in rescue....too many in fact. Our sister GSD rescue actually took in a whole litter of purebred GSD puppies that were taken from a hoarder.

Every dog has its each own personality, but granted, some breeds are easier trained than others. I'd really suggest just getting yourself out there and seeing what is available. You may surprise yourself when it comes to what dogs you like and dislike.

Have you considered fostering a dog? Most shelters, and all dog breed rescues have foster programs. You can foster the dog for as long as you want. 5 months or 4 weeks, it is up to you. Not only will you be getting a taste of what dog ownership is like, but you also will be saving a dog from being euthanized.

Most rescues pay for medical, and give you the supplies (leash, crate, etc..). Some are so desperate they will even pay for the food.

If there is a breed out there that really sparks your fancy, but you aren't sure if they'd be a good fit this is a perfect opportunity to "own" the dog of your dreams. I foster for a GSD rescue. It is great because although I could probably handle most breeds, I know GSDs much better. This makes it easier on me as a foster parent because I know what to expect.

Then, if it just so happens that you fall in love with a foster you can fill out the adoption papers and keep them forever :)

Check out petfinder.com or adoptapet.com for local rescues.

I absolutely LOVE Gypsy Vanners! So majestic and beautiful. I'm so thankful I grew up on a farm and got to experience all of this.

For the tattooed ladies and the ones who enjoy things other than shopping and hair, a tactful reply to a rather ignorant article. (original article linked in letter) by NightsBeautyin TwoXChromosomes

[–]SolarBears 72 points73 points ago

I hear it so many times from men who ask about my tattoos. "Won't you dislike the way that looks in 50 years?" In 50 years I think my appearance will be the last thing I have to worry about. I will be far more worried about neighborhood kids staying off my porch!

In the article she talked about how Khoury didn't think women were beautiful with tattoos. Perhaps it is because I have some of my own, but I think women and men with tattoos are far more attractive than ones without.

I think it is just hard for some people to realize you can be passionate enough about something to put it on your body for life.

My mother upon discovering my tattoos was disgusted and said only prisoners and people not going anywhere in life get them. So, yeah, lol I hear it from all sides. Good thing I'm still out of fucks to give.

Even one litter constitutes a breeding. Sorry to say you did get your dog from a breeder, and a BYB at that.

[–]SolarBears 0 points1 point ago

No, not really. Knock on wood I haven't ever needed to use my entire savings account for an emergency for my dog. For things like medical and such I've used that way more. My system works, and I wanted to share it with OP.

Sorry, you said one was abandoned on a porch and one was left on the side of the highway. Plenty of people find cats this way and call them "rescues".

My point about adopting a dog from a rescue still holds true though, and someone with such an intense fear of dogs should be looking for a dog that is as sociable and lovable as possible.

Can we be honest about breeders, please, Doggit? by Nomnombunnyin dogs

[–]SolarBears -1 points0 points ago

I know it may sound like semantics, but your cats are just strays that you adopted not "rescues." When you rescue a dog or cat you go through some form of an adoption process. Not everyone is qualified, and mostly for good reasons.

With rescuing you have the good and the bad, same with breeders. You may get a puppy from one of the most well respected breeders, and the dog still has a chance to become a destructive menace. I know you said that you wanted a puppy to raise and grow with you, but just be aware that you still stand a chance of getting one that won't live up to your standards. That is the good thing about adopting. Most rescues know their dogs backwards and forwards so there is little chance of the dog suddenly changing personality when adopted.

[–]SolarBears 0 points1 point ago

Insurance companies are still a business and they wouldn't be alive and kicking today if they didn't make a margin of profit. I understand that in your situation it probably helped out, but my point was that for the large majority of dog owners it isn't worth it.

Do you have dog insurance? If so who are you with, which plan do you have...and how much is it costing you? by wardserin dogs

[–]SolarBears 1 point2 points ago

Insurance for pets is ridiculous. There are so many hoops to jump through to get money from a claim, and they don't cover a lot of health issues that dogs have. My pet insurance is the savings account I opened for my dog.

Insurance companies are a business, they are not in it to help people. You are better off just putting money away for a rainy day.

[–]SolarBears 12 points13 points ago

There is nothing wrong with responsible breeding. I think the majority here would agree that the only problem is irresponsible BYBs. To say that someone should only rescue is ridiculous. Most people are impulsive and impatient and don't want to go through all the work it takes to get a puppy from a responsible breeder though. People want to throw money at the first litter they see without worrying about the health or temperament of the pup later in life. This is the sort of decision I think is disgusting and someone supporting a BYB should feel guilty. If you purchase responsibly you should have no guilt because most responsible breeders support funding for researching dog diseases, or they support breed rescues.

Huskies are a pretty popular breed though, so, it is hard to imagine there are none in rescue near you. A quick Petfinder.com or Adoptapet.com search should tell you all the huskies in rescue near you. If you do decide to purchase just make sure the breeder is reputable.

I was just joking around :) I spit out a good amount of wine when wine tasting, there were vineyards I really wanted to try and being tipsy would have ruined the experience.
