TROPHY CASE

When people exercise aerobically, their bodies can actually make drugs — cannabinoids, the same kind of chemicals in marijuana. by Giambattistain science

Oh very cool. Yeah that makes sense. There aren't knockout mice but dietary restriction is an interesting way to play with endocannabinoid levels. Thanks for the link!

Thinking about downloading game, have some questions first. by tmiller3192in Orbiter

[–]SodiumKPump 0 points1 point ago

Yeah it can be pretty challenging but that's part of the fun. Fuel efficiency is one of the things I'm still trying to get better at. Most of the time I run out of fuel before I've managed to get where I want to be.

But aside from that, there are lots of missions that are easier, e.g. you already start the mission in orbit and have to maneuver to a satellite and use the Canadarm to capture it. Then you can do an EVA and "repair" it, which basically means maneuver to it and pretend, lol. It's a lot of fun though. Was nice to see someone post to this subreddit as I don't think I've seen a single submission on my frontpage for this subreddit since I joined.

It's fairly difficult depending what you want to do. If you just want to fly into orbit that's not terribly difficult, but learning how to plan orbits and intercept the ISS is quite difficult. Granted I haven't been playing it for long and am starting to get the hang of it, it's not impossible or anything. Just takes time. Plan to do a lot of reading of the manuals and watching tutorials which really help.

But it is lots of fun! The amount of time and focus necessary makes those rewarding clicks of attaining a hard dock to the ISS a rewarding and an exhilarating experience.

Is it safe to take an SSRI [Zoloft] and DMT? by pigincuffsin DrugNerds

[–]SodiumKPump 0 points1 point ago

It's an overactivation of serotonin receptors. You don't need serotonin to get excess activation. I'm not that familiar with the underlying mechanisms of serotonin syndrome insofar as events downstream of 5HT1 and 5HT2 activation, but I do know the lists of pharmacological agents I've seen listed at risk for precipitating serotonin syndrome with SSRIs include psychedelics, e.g. LSD, DMT.

Depending on the dose it may or may not be likely. But as far as I am concerned, someone asking if they can take an SSRI and DMT is asking for trouble and should be advised not to combine these drugs.

It acts on 5-HT receptors. Many times serotonergic toxicity comes from mixing drugs which can result in elevated activation of 5HT receptors through different mechanisms, such as inhibiting transport, inhibiting metabolism, and directly activating those receptors.

I think that while it may be less likely than other drug combinations to produce serotonin syndrome, it's irresponsible to be mixing these drugs if there isn't any clinical need.

You could get serotonergic toxicity, aka. serotonin syndrome. I would advise against it.

You might have it reversed. There are FAAH knockout mice that lack the primary enzyme for anandamide metabolism and they exhibit elevated anandamide levels.

Technically, anything that imparts changes in the body is a drug. Semantics.

You would need to fully inhibit 2-AG and AEA metabolism concomitantly to produce full blown THC-like effects, though you can get partial THC-like effects inhibiting only 2-AG metabolism. This of course is modeled in mouse drug discrimination so take it as it is. See Long et al., 2009 for the data.

There aren't any mice that have been engineered to lack anandamide as the the biosynthesis of this compound isn't even fully understood. NAPE-PLD (through which was thought to be the primary avenue for AEA biosynthesis) knockout mice have wild-type anandamide levels. Just want to clarify.

Not really. See Kent Berridge's work. The dopamine = pleasure motif doesn't really hold up experimentally.

Are you high? You're claiming university researchers aren't allowed access to cannabis. I'm in a university lab. We have access. I don't need to read a book when I can see the plant material for myself.

Cannabinoid researcher here. This is absolutely false. Our lab, as others, has access to the NIDA drug supply which includes cannabis. We have cannabis in our drug freezer at this very minute and conduct inhalation studies in mice.

Who are some renown pharmacologist known for studying marijuana? I want to get my phd under a scholar who studies marijuana. by thcgoat12in pharmacology

[–]SodiumKPump 2 points3 points ago

Try pub med but google scholar will provide the same, if not better, results. But honestly, if you're unable to figure this out on your own already I'd say you need to get more lab/research experience before you attempt gaining admission to a PhD program in pharmacology. If you were genuinely interested in the field you should already be familiar with the endocannabinoid system. Frankly, you strike me as a pot enthusiast rather than someone who is interested in the science.

Environmental enrichment for lab rodents will increase neuronal growth, dendritic branching in hippocampal neurons, an effect which is also observed with antidepressants. This is important as reduced BDNF and growth/branching of neurons in the hippocampus is something that is observed in depressed patients.
