The article is nearly a direct copy of the press release... Which highly over hyped the actual scientific article.

The researchers only asked people to fill in a questionnaire, asking how frequency they consumed chocolate. NOT how much chocolate, or what quality of chocolate. And then jumped from the correlation that people with a lower BMI had answered to eating chocolate more frequently. More Details!

Are the safety reports published somewhere? Where have the journalists got the information on this from? Just from asking people working at the plant? They all seem to be quoting from the same piece.

I believe European nuclear plants have the highest safety rating. First step would be to get world-wide plants up to the same standard.

Agreed though this study was nearly 70% men. Which I think is interesting as from my own personal experiences I wouldn't have expected the same avoiding then binging on chocolate pattern shared between both sexes.

They didn't, the results are entirely from one questionnaire on what people eat. Be more interesting if they did.

They also didn't control for quantity or quality of chocolate more details! So I have no idea how this got published.. you can't really conclude anything from it

Or maybe it's down to the study not controlling for the quantity of chocolate consumed per sitting.. So maybe irregular binging on chocolate will cause people to have higher BMIs than people who regularly snack on reasonable portions of chocolate more details!

All that is mentioned in the paper is the Food Frequency questionnaire and general health stuff.

They don't even control for amount of chocolate consumed per sitting =/ even though the researcher in charge mentions portion control when interviewed. Bizarre.

I've read both, the conclusions in the press release aren't the conclusions reached in the paper.

Bizarrely flawed study... They only focused on frequency of consumptive of chocolate.. Not quantity.. So didn't control for binging!

I don't think they can even argue there is a link in the paper. They didn't control for quantity or quality of chocolate.. It's quite a bizarre read.

Their conclusion:

"In conclusion, our findings—that more frequent chocolate intake is linked to lower BMI—are intriguing. They accord with other findings suggesting that diet composition, as well as calorie number, may influence BMI. They comport with reported benefits of chocolate to other elements of MetS. Compatible experimental findings in rats given epicatechin from cocoa suggest the association could be causal. A randomized trial of chocolate for metabolic benefits in humans may be merited"

Biggest fault in the paper as far as I can see is taking a questionnaire's answers about how much people ate without adjusting for chances of people lying. Although possibly that is included in a "Fred Hutchinson Food Frequency Questionnaire". I'm not a food scientist.
