Colombia passes 1st draft of drug crop legalization bill: 'The initiative calls for the decriminalization of growing plants such as coca, marijuana and opium poppies in the country.' by maxwellhillin worldnews

When I pay for tomatoes at a roadside stand the price is not to much different from what I pay in the local grocery or the big chain grocery (with many middlemen taking a little profit).

Why would the roadside grower or the Dutch dealer behave differently.

Why, in the US, do we require counties to issue a license before a couple marries? by SkepticalJohnin politics

I don't have to get a license from the county before I enter into a contract with my cable provider, do I?

Strange Sea Creature caught on ROV..... Thoughts? by QuattroStigin biology

5,000 feet down. Perhaps the biological cost of eye development is greater than the gain in hunting-predation avoidance-mate finding? Think blind cave critters (but caves are so small mate finding is much easier).

I wish I had a hint as to what those whitish organs are.

Wow. First impression is mollusca. Vague impression of nudibranch with undertones of cephalopod. I got no idea.

In the National Parks of the United States I have found piles of astonishing size. People want to say "I was here". Better than spray paint, I suppose.

On the trails across the rocky bald tops of mountains and across the hard rimrock of the Colorado Plateau discrete yet obvious cairns become indispensable.

I am ready to be abused by mainstream opinion but, I have always regarded this as a form of petty vandalism. In a high traffic area where the hand of man is heavy anyway it hardly matters. However, where the signs of human presence are very light (wilderness areas, etc.) it saddens me to see these great piles of debris. (Now I duck and cover!)

Kodos: It's true, we are aliens. But what are you going to do about it? It's a two-party system. You have to vote for one of us.

Man 1: He's right, this is a two-party system.

Man 2: Well I believe I'll vote for a third-party candidate.

Kang: Go ahead, throw your vote away.

Sceptical high school students being visited by a homeopath! by vanadammein skeptic

One of the most attractive aspects of this class visit is that it may help prevent objectifying credulous people. We non-believers can fall too easily in to the habit of discarding the 'other'.

All useful comments.

I am drawn to two literary models which are pertinent: "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" (engineer restructures a culture) and "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (Golgafrincham-B-ark based culture).

Please keep an eye out. by frenulemin MTB

How Reddit-debased I have become. I almost didn't click on this because I first assumed it would involve inappropriate contact between a handlebar end and eye socket!

Seriously thought, hope the culprits are caught.

WaPo admits: Republicans are the problem by Periclesofathensin democrats

[–]SkepticalJohn 2 points3 points ago

My favorite quote from the article sums up much for me: "While the Democrats may have moved from their 40-yard line to their 25, the Republicans have gone from their 40 to somewhere behind their goal post."

Nonetheless, I still support Democratic candidates.

Emotions run so high on this there will never be a mutually satisfying solution. It sounds to me that the science speaks clearly to those who like science as a decision making tool.

I hope I am wrong on my first suggestion.

Mea culpa... is from the is from a prayer of confession of sinfulness used in the Roman Catholic mass from the 16th century onwards. (additionally, the word religious is mispeled.)

Why are you a Democrat? by imonlyredditing41dayin democrats

[–]SkepticalJohn 4 points5 points ago

Such an important question! I can't tell the whole story because it would be long, convoluted and boring to most anyone else but me.

Here are the main themes. Democrats have done more to look out for the downtrodden than other parties. Democrats have a much greater chance of getting elected than even more progressive parties.

The Secret has all the intellectual rigor and creative insight as the sports announcer who says of the winning team, "They just wanted it more."

I need an idea like that to make shitloads of money.

Sadly, I just don't want it enough.
