Is it bad practice to make the <CUSTOM> piece you noted in step 4 the same as the account name, or would you say most people do that?

Get your car towed as well so you can share the misery together. She'll probably feel better knowing you somehow made the same mistake.

I made this one accidentally and have enjoyed using it ever since. When trying to be blunt I'll say something like, "Well, to be perfectly frank...I'd have to change my name." I then awkwardly continue to my actual point.

Heat Sink for Exhaust? by SephyKidin HVAC

This does sound like an expensive setup. The biggest hurdle is that the heating unit is in the basement, and the building is 4 stories tall. The chimney is in decent condition at best (I recently tore up the attic, which is a fully finished attic, to discover the chimney was crumbling on the inside of the house, which could of course be problematic in the future).

I think the part of that that would be the best in my case of what you suggested is the installation of a backdraft damper. Can this be done on a dryer vent as well? Ours, even with the flapper outside, seems to let a LOT of cold air in when the dryer is off.

Very interesting comment. It is unfortunate that people had to die from negligence on the part of another person. I have CO and other gas detecting equipment around the furnace and vents to monitor for anything bad in the air as a precaution already, as I generally don't trust most contractors in my area. I don't want to tamper with the main unit, though I can already say the person who installed it likely did not do so up to code (I would love to have someone who cares about their work like you take a look instead of the typical HVAC workers around my area who want to make the job quick instead of safe).

The unit we have is part of a double house and was installed prior to us moving in. The worst part (I imagine this is illegal) is that the duct work was installed with wires inside of it. I believe the installer should have either routed around the wires (old tube and knob, very brittle at this point and quite dangerous) or refused to install it until an electrician could come in and convert or reroute the wiring.

He also did not use heat rated duct tape around all connections, allowing heat to basically be forced out of the cracks where pipes were connected. This included the exhaust which now has high temperature duct tape sealing the connections. It doesn't help that the old duct work was connected into asbestos covered ducts, which also should have been removed by a professional.

I really appreciate your passion for your work and appreciation for safety. I don't believe I will be messing with the system at all, save for sealing any holes I haven't found yet and finishing wrapping of the duct work connections in the high temperature rated duct tape.

Do you have any tips for things that can be implemented safely to improve the efficiency of the furnace? I clean the air intakes which are upstairs regularly and change the filter as well at least every 3 months, though I check it every month. Mind you much of the duct work relies on the floor joists as faux ducts, which I've read is not ideal (but with the age of the house it would be tough to change, as all walls are plaster and lathe covered).

An interesting subreddit I've never heard of. Thanks for informing me of it and of the rocketmass heaters.

Yea, after doing some calling and research it looks like all devices that interfere with the exhaust are strictly outlawed now. Most stores I calld stated they used to have them but suddenly couldn't buy them (not a single store knew why they stopped carrying them). I agree there is certainly risk but also wonder why something, if done safely, can't be used. Interesting thing they had on the wood stove - that is likely what I am thinking of. I am thinking at this point of just having a fan at low speed run on the outside of the pipe to grab some heat, as it is a somewhat long pipe. Might end up wasting more energy on electric though than I save collecting what little heat I can using that method.

Good point. Right now the pipe get scalding hot. How hot does the exhaust need to be when leaving to prevent such issues?

While it looks awesome, I'll bet you had just as much difficultly doing simple tasks as I did in my Lego costume. I went as a giant blue block. I couldn't sit down, though most of my costume acted as a great place to put food and beer. I could also hide inside of it if I wanted to leave the party or scare people walking by. Either way, great job!

I honestly thought the same thing when I read it. It seems, from what I gather, that a person must have a green card prior to getting married (thus he, assuming he was already an American citizen, did not go through the standard procedures). The law seems vague though, so I'm not sure I am interpreting it correctly.

Yea, seriously, what's your problem? I had a great time getting this, and it was my choice. Just because it was worded a certain way doesn't mean she "let" me or that I need to ask for everything. In fact, we worded the title together since she was excited to post it but doesn't post all that much. Husband/wife combo attack BAM.

I'm quite surprised by the number of people who think henna tattoos, simply by virtue of having the word "tattoo", are permanent. In three weeks this will be gone.

Far from the truth. She chose the word "let" and so many seem to think that that means she has to approve/disapprove of what I want, which is not at all the case.

He does indeed know me. I am the person pictured. And I tend to make a variety of very strange faces. I can show them off once I perfect them all. Which means I need to brush my teeth more often.

For some reason I always picture this literally. I would love to drive down the road and see churches floating above the land. Unfortunately I lack photoshop skills, so I can't create this. If someone can do so that would be awesome.
