Random compliment that's not actually an expression of interest: Day-brightener, or creepy?

Came across a dude on OKC last night who was just so gorgeous that I sat there jaw-dropped for a few minutes. His profile seemed to suggest he'd been hurt a lot and didn't have the best self-esteem. Questions made clear there's no compatibility, and I'm not really looking at the moment anyway until I make some decisions related to other parts of my life that will affect how much time I have for dating/relationships in the near future. Sent a compliment anyway, just something along the lines of, "Hey, it's pretty clear we're not compatible, but I just thought you might like to hear that you are one of the most photogenic people I've ever run across. Keep doing what you're doing, best wishes!"

This dude responded positively, but as a female person I'm not as familiar as guys with the art of walking the line between compliment and creepliment. I tend to absentmindedly roll the dice in a browser tab while I write in another tab late at night, so I'd do that kind of thing more often if it brightens people's days to wake up to a random compliment from a girl, but if the consensus is that it's weird/creepy, I won't.

Okay. It does NOT look like your photos when I try putting multiple colors of eye shadow on. Is there a diagram of how to do this or something? I've tried buying the palettes that come with instructions of which color goes where, but I don't even understand "highlight" or whatever, I need training wheels...

[Offer] Reddit bobblehead seeks loving home.

Hey y'all--

I have a Reddit bobblehead that has been riding around in the back seat of my car for about 18 months now. He'd like a loving home with someone who will display him in a more comfortable setting.

He's sort of a collectible if you like obscure Reddit trivia--he was meant to be in the Reddit calendar, but Alexis picked a photo that didn't actually have the bobblehead in it and shopped one in instead.

I have two cats at home that would knock him down and break his head if I put him on a shelf somewhere, and at work I kind of don't want to have a lot of conversations about Reddit (LOL) so the poor thing has been in limbo for a long time. I'll ship him at my expense to someone who will give him a good home--preference would be someone who's been around long enough to make a good story of how they got him and his obscure Reddit trivia status. :)

I've been calling him Wilford McHambleton IV, Esq., but you can feel free to rename him.

You rock! I'm sorry I have no idea who you are (Tigeris? ViolentAcrez? DOGA? Someone else who got my mailing address somehow?) or I would thank you through a PM, but I'm hoping either you're a Secret Santa subscriber or you will check my profile. I know you must have sent this postcard a long time ago, but it went to my parents' address (that I use as my mailing address cause all the mail at my house tends to get stolen) and since it was addressed to Saydrah, they thought it was some random thing sent to the wrong address--but my dad has been carrying it around in his car because he thought the old photo and the LOD pin were funny.

It says "Look of disapproval has no way to approve of how awesome you are." D'awww. :D

Anyway, I found it today and went OMG!!! AWESOME!!! and then immediately went "Oh no, somebody out there thinks I didn't get this or didn't give a shit!" So I am posting this in hopes that you will see it, whoever you are.

So, anonymous postcard and look of disapproval sender, thank you! You totally made my day, belatedly though I received your message. The button has gone in my special purse pocket for the favorite buttons I carry everywhere and put on when I go somewhere that they will be appreciated. And since the postcard had already become all curved and yellowed and crinkly from sitting in my dad's car for however long, I've transferred it to my glove compartment so I'll have it with me if I need a quick bit of cheering up. If I knew who you were or how to reach you, I'd write back through the mail, but there was no return address or even a postmark (maybe it faded off?) so this lengthy Reddit post will have to do unless you choose to reveal yourself. Regardless, please know that you kick ass!

Posting this mostly for the people checking my profile periodically to see if I've been back--hi, profile stalkers! There are a few judging by the pile of PMs I got when I visited to joke around with Knaut on April Fool's.

Anyway, I'm around, but I'm not going to be very active at least for a while. Several things occurred to me around the time that Reddit created the shit storm around that D-list British celebrity by a Redditor posting nude pictures of her in a thread about one night stands, obviously without her consent. That incident was shocking to me, especially in its stark contrast to the first time I ever saw Reddit create a major news story--that being the sending of flowers to Helen Thomas.

In any case, one of my few superstitious beliefs (and one which I am aware is a superstition that provides a convenient explanation for something equally easily explained by science) is that the universe has a way of warning you when you're doing something self-destructive and giving you a chance to change that pattern before it does you any serious harm. I came to the realization that there's a pattern in my life of wrapping myself up in online communities to an unhealthy degree, to the point where I become comfortable sharing things with strangers on the Internet that I would never in a million years discuss with a stranger on the street. I felt an immense sense of relief when I stayed off Reddit completely for a week or so, yet I probably never would have made that choice had it not been a matter of personal safety. That's bothersome to me. I don't like feeling that I lack insight into my own behavior.

Furthermore, and perhaps more importantly, I'm starting to realize that I'm in a phase of my life where I'm evolving rapidly in a number of important ways. I look back at things I wrote a year ago and find it impossible to answer questions about them, because I barely recognize them as my own. What does that mean for things that I put on the Internet today? In a year or five years am I going to have a hard time comprehending my thought process when I wrote this post? I don't think anyone can ever say with certainty, "This is how I feel about X and that will never ever change," but I do think it's better that I avoid putting as much of myself out there in public until I feel like I've reached whatever place I'm growing toward at this point in time.

There are people in my offline life who deserve the time and energy I've been putting into online interaction. I have an amazing niece growing up faster and faster every day, and I think there's more value in a game of Monopoly with her than a game of "pun thread on the Internet" at home by myself. I need to wean myself off of my enjoyment of instant gratification via Internet, so that if I find myself again getting too emotionally intimate with a website I'll know when to step away and reconsider, and when to behave with integrity above fear, and when to simply let it go. The time and words I used to spend writing novella-length posts in AskReddit and RelationshipAdvice have been repurposed toward completing a novel I've been working on for a long time. Maybe I'll actually finish it someday.

As for work: I owe you all my thanks, because I now have a new job title that I'm much more comfortable with and which better describes my actual responsibilities. I'm now a "Community Coordinator," and I still feel I work for a great company. We're going to have a visit from one of our most successful writers soon, and I can't wait to meet her--the company I work for makes it possible for her to work from home and do very well for herself in the middle of a recession, and she voluntarily takes a lot of time out of her days to help newbies get up to speed and moderate things like forum disputes. Great gal.

I've also come to the realization that, 5-10 years in the future, I really want to be working in the nonprofit field. I love what I'm doing now, but I think I want to eventually go back to school part-time for a degree in nonprofit management, then either look into the directorship and/or grantwriting career tracks or apply to law school and look for a job with a nonprofit like the ACLU or Greenpeace.

In other news, I adopted a one-eyed kitten. Here she is with me before surgery. Not a great picture of me, but look at the cat. Here she is after surgery. I'm calling her Carmen, as in Carmen Sandiego, because she's very small, quiet, and prone to hide in dark corners or closets or cupboards, so I spend a lot of time trying to figure out where in the world she is.

Back on the subject of Reddit: This is an extraordinary community full of good things, and after a month or so of reflection, I feel I should apologize after all for calling you 90% shitheads. It took some time to come around to that point of view, but I think that the real problem in Reddit isn't that most people are shitheads--they aren't--but that Reddit is growing at an incredible pace and where once the lowest common denominator consisted of a few people, now it consists of thousands because the total readership is probably well into the millions. But that shouldn't harm anyone's experience here, if you stay grounded in the real world first and foremost. The basics here are all good: Admins who give a damn, a community that's mostly strong, and small subreddits that provide a better experience than the big ones that have become too heavily infested with hiveminders.

Thanks for all the supportive private messages; I'll get to the ones I can, but there are a lot, so I hope nobody will be immensely offended if you don't get a reply or if you get a generic "I appreciate it, thank you," message.

If anyone wants to keep in touch outside Reddit (besides those who already keep in touch with me) I use an AIM account with the same username as my Reddit login. I'm always happy to offer what has been typically considered a decent perspective on relationships, and I know a fair bit about pet care, too, so feel free to drop me a line by AIM if you were thinking of PMing me here to ask a question about one of those things--I'm not likely to check my PMs very often for a while.

Anyway, this isn't really another AMA type thread, but I'll probably reply to some questions/comments if you leave them. Primarily, however, I wanted to let everyone know where I've been and where I'll be for a while. If/when I come back on a more frequent basis, it'll be with a more limited focus and only after I'm confident that Reddit will no longer be something I get so into that it starts to make me rearrange my priorities in ways that, when I think rationally about them, don't accurately reflect my own core values.

I won't delete this account, but I also won't rule out making a new one where I don't get as personal with Reddit. Now that I've been away for a while, I can see how bizarre it is that people know more about me here than many people in my offline life know about me, and that for a long time I wasn't uncomfortable with that.

In any case, good tidings to all of you. I'll be here today to check PMs and messages, and I'll try over the next few days to get back to people who've PMed me in the past few weeks. After that, if you see me around in the next several months it'll either be briefly or it'll be as one of my two novelty accounts (no prizes for guessing which ones are me) making a quick joke.

Is anyone else getting calls from Capital One pressuring you to sign up for a program that would let you go over your credit limit for a $29 fee each time?

Had a devil of a time convincing the telephone rep that I would really rather have my card declined in the unlikely event that I somehow went over my credit limit.

This seems sleazy to me. Is there more to this than meets the eye? I'm wondering if recent legislation forced them to change the default option to "decline transactions over the credit limit" rather than "charge obscene fees," so now they're calling customers and trying to sell their former extortion method as an add-on service.
